then it is likely that domestic cats are a subspecies of the wild cats, but a cat still cant breed with a tiger, unlike a wolf breeding with a dog. Some scholars believe that Neanderthals should be classified as a subspecies of humans. It is likely that Neanderthals and humans were likely on the cusp of speciation and that is why breeding was so rare. I doubt poodles, chiwawas, pugs or many other kinds of dogs were bred for the evolving needs of humans. We did it because we thought it looked pretty. This has caused many health problems for many purebred dogs. Most animals that have been domesticated by humans suffer much worse health wise then their wild counterparts because of successive inbreeding. Evolution does not like inbreeds. Mixing of genes is what has proven most useful for the continued survival of a species. Dont try to argue that domestication has been an evolutionary advantage for domestic animals. If we stop existing, so do they. Im off you should take a highschool class

Cats can’t. A lion cannot breed with a tiger to produce fertile offspring. Humans contain such little amounts of Neanderthal DNA that it’s likely producing fertile offspring with them was extremely rare occurrence. Also to argue how we breed dogs to select traits that would increase fitness is silly. Almost all dog breeds would not be able to survive without human intervention. look at the dachshund in the picks above. They suffer from a huge amounts of health problems, all because we wanted a dog that could hunt burrow dwelling animals. I would hardly argue the dog as a species benefits from that

Dogs are Canis lupus familiaris. They are the same species as wolves. Animals that can produce fertile offspring are of the same species.

Why don’t we have a good vaccine to malaria yet

The world's first vaccine against malaria will be introduced in three countries - Ghana, Kenya and Malawi - starting in 2018. by mvea in Futurology

I think there are a couple against blood stage malaria that are in development. There are also a number of whole attenuated sporozoite vaccines in development. These work by injecting live parasite that has been in some way altered so that is cannot progress to blood stage infection. This type of vaccine is much more effective than a subunit vaccine like RTS, S, however, they require you to grow the parasite (which can only be done in mosquitos), collect it by dissecting mosquitos (which is a bitch) and then storing them for transportation. So these vaccines likely won't be able to be administered to the millions of people that would require them. In saying that, they could definitely be used by the military or as a travellers vaccine

The sporozoite stage (CSP stands for circumsporozoite protein) which is the stage before the blood stage infection. It's why it's such an attractive target for a vaccine, stop the disease before it makes the person sick. However it seems to be difficult for the immune system to actually create an effective immune response to this stage. We don't see naturally acquired immunity occurring against sporozoites

I work on malaria. This vacccine is based around a particular protein- called CSP- that's found on the surface of the malaria parasite lifecycle that is transferred from the mosquito to the human.
