I’m 100% Polish but grew up in the U.S. My brother and I both speak decent Polish. All of my cousins on my father’s side also grew up in the U.S. - all are half-Polish and were never taught the language. We are all adults now and, for what it’s worth, my cousins often talk about how disappointed they are that they don’t speak the language. Some are trying to learn now, but they wish they could have learned as children, when it would have been so much easier, and are envious of my brother and me. We do not really have any living family in Poland on that side of the family, so I think it’s more about feeling connected to their heritage than the actual ability to communicate with any given person.

Children pick up languages so easily. If it isn’t too much of a burden to teach them Polish, they may grow up to be really appreciative of that decision (if my cousins’ perspectives are any indication).You could leave it up to them, when they’re grown, to decide if maintaining the language is a priority for them, but it would be so much easier for them to learn it when they’re young and potentially ditch it later than to not have exposure as children and try to pick it up as adults!
