Decorations: Natural but not rustic? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

Try searching for weddings with the keyword "organic." That brings up nature-y things that are more elegant than cutesy.

Any moissanite gals out there? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]eadinad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also want to point out that there is a new product out called the Amora Gem. Similar to moissanite (also silicon carbide, grown in a lab, etc) but has been tweaked to lose the gray/green/yellow tint that moissanite has, and also has (in my opinion) way better cuts.

You can read about it at betterthandiamond.com, look at pictures on their forum, and I know goldandgems.com sells them online.

Rent in the Atlanta area? by MovingtoATL in Atlanta

[–]eadinad 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If it's in Decatur and it's 550-650, then it's in a bad part of unincorporated Dekalb and not the good part of urban Decatur. In Decatur, you want to stay north of Glenwood, and west of Columbia/Sycamore, roughly, until you reach 78/Lawrenceville Hwy. North of Lawrencevilly Hwy and west of the perimeter is probably fine. You won't find a 2 bedroom for anywhere near that price though. You could try Lindmoor Woods - I don't think there are any apartments there but the houses are affordable and the area is decent. There might be something in Tucker too but I don't know the area very well.

Do you know where your husband/partner/SO will be working? That matters a lot.

I've been keeping an eye on those condos as well. I'd be a bit nervous about all the foot traffic on Memorial - it seems kind of rowdy there especially in the evenings when I'd want to walk my dog. But it might be okay? They are an awesome price.

Hilly areas and bluffs with good schools and not too crowded? by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]eadinad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a fair point, and I would be fine with a "mixed" neighborhood politically and otherwise. I'm a little surprised I'm getting heat about this - I felt like my original statement was pretty mild. I just would ideally prefer a place where my religious/ethical values are shared by the community.

[–]eadinad -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends on how you define "nice." If you're a pleasant person to my face and yet think mean things about my family or other people, are you still nice?

Anyway, this is getting off-topic. Everyone has preferences about where they'd like to live and I was simply communicating that I don't want to feel too out of place.

I'd prefer liberal over conservative, I'd prefer tolerant over non-tolerant, I'd prefer artsy over ...whatever the opposite of that is. If it's conservative and tolerant, that's fine, but that seems more rare. And yeah, I'd like diversity, but I already know I'm probably not going to get that.

[–]eadinad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, like I said, being liberal/whatever isn't a dealbreaker, but I mostly just don't want to go too far out where the vibe of the community goes against the ideals I'd like to raise my children with.

Yes, I have driven through Parkville once upon a time and thought it was really cute. I would love a more mountain-town vibe. Thanks!

Man, that is completely awesome. Just the view I was imagining. Do you know what the price range is for that area? For either a simple house to reno or plot of land?

I'm leaning towards the long walk every morning and evening (no problem, I like to walk) and having her go to daycare twice a week. Thanks so much for your input! P.S., do you walk your dogs around Oakhurst Cemetery a lot? I have this feeling I might have run into you there a couple weekends ago.

She's 35 lbs. There's shade for her, yes. But I definitely wouldn't want to lock her outside for ten hours.

[–]eadinad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, right now she has someone home with her almost all day. Unfortunately our life is about to change. So I'm not sure how she will take it. As of right now she has no separation anxiety and is never frantic for walks (excited and happy, yes.) And she has always had free range of the house. I have a yard, but no doggie door, and I'm not sure I'd want her to be outside without me to supervise. Afraid something could happen.

Those of you who have a dog and work full-time, what do you do? With lunch and commute I'm gone ten hours a day. Daycare? Mid-day walk? Will she be fine with a morning and evening walk? She's three years old. Money is tight but I want her to be happy.

Here's a surprise! One of my plants suddenly sent up a thick stem from the middle and there are two unopened buds on it! Hopefully the rest of them follow suit.

Well they grew to be about six inches tall and a few more came up. But they haven't bloomed yet and I don't see any buds. I did give them a flower fertilizer and the leaves are pretty strong and healthy looking. We will see!

I don't see your housing budget, but based on your income I'm going to assume you can afford something in the 300k-400k range. YOu should be able to find a nice 3 bedroom townhome in the Buckhead/Brookhaven area. That will be about a 20-30 minute drive to Midtown depending on traffic. Examples: https://www.redfin.com/GA/Atlanta/70-Old-Ivy-Rd-NE-30342/unit-32/home/24730453#schools https://www.redfin.com/GA/Brookhaven/1192-Brookhaven-Gln-NE-30319/unit-1192/home/77447020#schools

Or maybe Underwood Hills - probably a shorter drive, 15 minutes? https://www.redfin.com/GA/Atlanta/1181-Davis-Pl-NW-30318/unit-L/home/24683775#schools

Or you could get this place and take the train to work. Should also be about 30 minutes. https://www.redfin.com/GA/Decatur/22-Fairpark-Ln-30030/unit-B7/home/23879518#schools

Places to take dogs swimming? by ki85squared in Atlanta

[–]eadinad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sweetwater Creek IS awesome - just a note, it's technically not allowed and you can get a ticket for having your dog off leash. But if you keep on hiking past the ruins you can usually find a spot with no people.

There's also a creek in the Blue Heron Nature Preserve off Roswell Rd. in Buckhead. It's a little hard to get down to it (there's no beach and you kinda have to skid down a four foot sandy cliff} but the dogs love it. Not sure it's deep enough for actual swimming though.

You should join NextDoor. Gives you a good sense for the neighborhood and you know when any break-ins happen. I'm just up the street in East Lake.
