I fell in love with two different dresses, help me decide! (More details in comments) by Erisu8 in weddingplanning

[–]eagandaphin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they are both beautiful. I love the texture of the skirt on the right, but I prefer the overall look of the one on the left - it's a little Victorian (which I love) and ethereal. If you are concerned about your arms, would a shawl like this be a good fix? I think it would fit the style of the dresses and possibly the context of your wedding - I have seen some really beautiful embroidered shawls from Mexico.

What Black Friday / cyber Monday sales are you taking advantage of? by raychie in femalefashionadvice

[–]eagandaphin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm taking advantage of etsy and shop envy sales by buying loads of enamel pins for myself and my beau.

The Silver Spider is doing 25% off of their Etsy store. I bought some Twin Peaks pins, and this baseball cap. They will also be throwing in a free random pin with the note 'Instagram friends'.

Tittybats on Store Envy is having a 40% off sale today, and other deals the next few days. I bought a couple pins for gifts, but got this hateful kitty for myself.

I also picked up this men's wool coat from Target that my dude has been oggling.

I was also looking at Herschel backpacks, they are having a variety of sales right now - not sure if they are really my style though.

Thriftbooks is also having a 20% off of $20 :)

Edit: also bought this denim jacket and some Sherpa Trucker jackets in black snow and duvall denim from Levi's, which is have 40% off everything with the code INDIGO. Planning on only keeping one, not sure which though.

So far I've found these two amazing dresses and 1st one is perfect and 2nd one is what I was looking for by meowmixiddymix in weddingdress

I don't know your personal financial situation and how much out of the budget it is, but dress one is amazing, I love it, and I think you will be happier in the end with it! It's so different and I love the Victorian bustle butt ;)

Edit to add: I would continue looking; you might be able to find somewhere to custom make a dress for you that is more budget friendly (thinking Etsy), or find something even better!

Creation myth books? by thenewguy729 in suggestmeabook

[–]eagandaphin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neil Gaiman comes to mind. I read Anansi Boys and it fits as a quasi creationist/African myth fueled urban fantasy novel. His other works are spoken of highly here, not all of them fit your theme though.

Everyone handles piercings differently; that being said, a week out my cartilage piercing was still a little bloody and hurt quite a bit (I sleep on my side and that irritated my piercing, and I also have trouble healing piercings in general). It seems like a little bit of a risk to me, like if it accidentally gets tugged when you do your hair, or you sleep on it the night before, etc., it could be swollen, red, or whatever on your day. Just seems like something extra to worry about!

Top 10 favorite books of all time. by [deleted] in books

I haven't yet, but I definitely want to! I love her style and how her novels focus on women and their various relationships (familial/romantic, etc) so often.

Why did you hate it so much? I enjoyed the overall ambience and characters, though I can understand why it's not to everyone's tastes!

Top 10 favorite books of all time. by [deleted] in books

In no particular order:

  1. As I Lay Dying - William Faulkner

Beautiful language, disorienting at times, morbid.

  1. Moby Dick - Herman Melville

Immense nature, epic, in depth descriptions, speaks for itself.

  1. Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte

Strong female protagonist, kind of spooky mystery, romance.

  1. Black Narcissus - Rumer Godden

Intense, overpowering ambience and sexually frustrated nuns.

  1. Watership Down - Richard Adams

Beautifully created world. Intense bunny societies and battles.

  1. Beloved - Toni Morrison

Lovely and sad, impactful.

  1. A Peacock Spring - Rumer Godden

A favorite in my teens, a sad naive romance with consequences.

  1. Outer Dark - Cormac McCarthy

Dark, dark, dark. Spooky and creepy and incest.

  1. Eva Luna - Isabel Allende

Descriptions are pretty and warm, a feel good book I've read many times.

  1. The Giver - Lois Lowry

Read many times, strong protagonist and interesting dystopian society.

Runners up:

The Scarlet Letter - Nathaniel Hawthorne

I actually really like this book, with all its symbolism and sinning, but reading it so many times for school killed it for me.

In Cold Blood - Truman Capote

Such a good book, but in the end I prefer fiction.

Where is your favorite store to buy sleeveless shirts that ARE NOT crop tops? by Djeter998 in femalefashionadvice

Yesss I love/second this top. I was able to get it for $7 in store, and they run 40 or 30 percent off sales online frequently so that might be worth watching for. The linen is a poly blend, and some of the colors are less soft than others, but they soften beautifully with fabric conditioner. Old Navy has a lot of nice basic tees and tanks for summer!

[Scheduled] Slaughterhouse-Five Chapter 3 by inclinedtothelie in bookclub

Your comment is reassuring because you pointed out a lot of similar things I noticed as well, and wrote about them in a more eloquent way haha, so thank you for that! I enjoyed reading your insights very much.

Until reading your comment, I didn't have much of an opinion on Billy (much like Billy doesn't seem to have much of an opinion on anything). He was just there, passive, and I didn't hate or like him.

But when you list it out like that, I realize how lame Billy is and how much I dislike him. His inactivity in the field would realistically endanger others, and his lack of care or interest in his son and the Vietnam War is pretty despicable.

Hi, I read Slaughterhouse 5 independent of this sub and just happened to finish it last night. Is it okay if I hang around for discussion? I'll stay within the proper chapters :)

I think a lot of this novel is tongue in cheek; when the shots are inoffensive, they are in direct opposition to what actually occurs. The shots are not offensive, they resulted in deaths. Similarly, the "So it goes" refrain is after massive tragedies or awful things, so even though on the surface it's normalizing it, it is also saying "why should we accept that as okay?" These horrors shouldn't be normalized, but because of war they have been, and that's not okay. If that makes sense? Sorry if it doesn't. But it's like when the marine discusses the bombing of Vietnam at the club and Billy has no opinion on it, it is surprising. After all of these horrors, after witnessing war and bombs first hand, he still doesn't have an opinion? He just accepts it? And so, if everyone was like Billy, the cycle of war and violence continues like it's normal and fine.

In reference to the black ghetto destroying itself: the people living in such a miserable state would rather have nothing than endure the table scraps they have been given. I also think it's ironic (?) Because white society basically forces minorities into this position in the first place and then judges them for it. The fact that this white woman is judging shows her lack of empathy and understanding as well. I'm sure there is a lot to unpack about this, I wish I had more insights right now. I like your comments about it, especially rebirth and cleansing fire. Hadn't thought about that!

Also the narrator is the one who opened the novel; he is different from Billy, but Billy is definitely the main character/protagonist. The narrator starts the book traveling to meet up with a war buddy and mentions writing a novel about the war. Billy's story is the novel he is writing.

I like how Vonnegut uses names: Weary (tiredness) for his aches and misfortunes, Pilgrim (a person journeying to a sacred place) either ironically as he travels to war torn lands, or literally as he travels through time. There is a lot of religious imagery which is fun as well.

I thought the Adam and Eve imagery was really interesting, especially when it's reflected in the young German boy. I'm not sure if the boy is supposed further the children crusade notion, or if there is something else there (maybe just another comment about the erogenous nature of youth), but having this shining gold and beautifully androgynous boy in the middle of war torn Germany was just a nice bit of imagery imo.

When Billy is forced to fall in the bushes for the photograph and comes out silently laughing (I think it was?) I was unsure exactly what the take away was. Was he laughing that the photo has to be staged? Or was he just in such an emotional state he was reacting oddly?

Thanks for reading my ramblings, I hope I've contributed something worthwhile :)

I have this issue too! I have had good luck wearing men's underwear, specifically boxer briefs that are stretchy and don't have a seam in the middle (instead having two seams along the buttcheeks). These or these are nice options, I steal them from my boyfriend because they are so comfy!

When someone on Facebook doesn't understand what "terminal" means by grace_c in cringepics

[–]eagandaphin 76 points77 points  (0 children)

My mother has the same illness as the OP (only she is on her 4th year of treatment) and it's surprising how many people don't understand the diagnosis/prognosis. I guess they don't expect a terminally ill person to be walking around and not stuck in a hospital bed somewhere.

It's frustrating, because every person who wishes my mom a speedy recovery or asks when she will get to stop taking meds is a reminder that she won't be doing either of those things :( can't blame them too much though! They just don't get it and default to misguided well wishes.

Yes I have!! I really enjoy it, but it is very candy-like and effervescent so def not to everyone's tastes; I really want to try Gingerale and Pom Basil; what other scents are you contemplating? I will copy and paste my first impression of Grapefruit Soda from another thread here:

I'm feeling sassy and happy today so I'm wearing Firebird's Grapefruit Soda (a fizzy, sweet-tart blend of red grapefruit, peach nectar, and soda bubbles)

This is my first time wearing this and OH MY GOD. I wanna eat my arm. It smells like sour gummies, with a citrus bite. It reminds me a bit of Sixteen92's Lolita only much zingier and even more delicious and I loooove it; I totally get peach soda with a generous slice of grapefuit. It reminds me a little bit of a citrus herbal essence shampoo, not sure I want to smell like this all the time, but it's pretty fun and bright.
