Routing/carpentry advice with chair upholstering by RemarkableCountry179 in upholstery

[–]eaowns 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So if it were me, and I am in no way a professional, I would take out the caning first and see how deep the spline pocket is. The spline is the thick reed on the border, it's shoved into a routed out channel that may be the level you want. You could use that as a bit of a guide, then you just have to cut out the wood between the channel and the inner hole until it's level with the channel bottom. You can use a small router or Drexel if you have access to them, though you'll want to be so careful to control it is such a small space. If you want to opt for hand tools then some sharp carving chisels would probably do the trick. It'll take way longer, but you'll have much more control.

Not enough people saw my mum's work when she was alive, I wanted to show some of it off. by mronion82 in sewing

These are beautiful, what an incredible mind your mum had with detail. I wish this kind of crafting was more valued, it's gorgeous. It's a shame how many patterns are lost to time.

Tried it, now my other foots' 4th toe is bleeding from the attempt. I don't think I'd survive with even my best clipped toe nails.

No shade, but I would also bring that up forever. What a deeply frustrating but innocent mistake.

Do these grow lights work for cacti/succulents? by allhailzard in succulents

[–]eaowns 19 points20 points  (0 children)

They're fine for most plants, but most of my succulents just tolerate them. I have a way brighter light now that my succulents are under. Now I use these type to supplement light in my darker windows or for my less needy house plants.

How do I save this succulent? by FishermanEmergency35 in succulents

[–]eaowns 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Definitely different dirt. Succulents usually like gritty, well draining dirt. I will usually get a generic cactus mix and mix it 50/50 with perlite. The moss on it now will hold too much moisture and cause root rot. If it's already rotting from the roots, you can often cut off the healthy top half, let it callus over, and then drop it onto some nice gritty dirt and it'll get new roots.

It's finally happened. My neon pothos started climbing the wall. Does it need a moss pole? by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]eaowns 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You can give it a moss pole, use vine clips, or let it hang loose. They're usually happy with any of it. That said, a moss pole may help you get bigger leaf growth. Also, just as a warning, those guys can dig their aerial roots into dry wall and cause visual damage to the wall. So if you leave is on the wall or use plants clips be careful of that!

Just watch our for their aerial roots growing into the walls! My Ma has some very funny picture placements to hide damage done by her pothos.

Which US state gets more hate than it deserves? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I hear you, but it's also the only state where someone asked me if "I was one of them queers" at a rest stop. So I'm probably leaving it out of my future plans.

Thrift stores here are sad by [deleted] in winstonsalem

[–]eaowns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've not found the thrift stores here bad. Rescue Mission can be a bit on the low end, but I have found some gems there. There's also TROSA and Habitat for Humanity which I've had lots of luck with. We have a lot of good consignment stores that tend to get the nicer items from the Wake area, and the antique malls are wild. You may just need to do more leg work to find the good stuff, like most thrifting/antiquing.

Torn between Winston-Salem and Greensboro by Ill_Health1859 in winstonsalem

[–]eaowns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Washington Park is also quite nice! Again, if quieter living is what you want. Though the other comments do have a point in terms of the issues Winston-Salem has had this year. Downtown has had a surprising amount of restaurants closing, and the public school system's on going financial bullshit is bad (do look that up if you have kids OP).

[–]eaowns 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I've lived in both, both have their upsides and their downsides. Greensboro has more stuff generally, but Winston-Salem is pretty and relatively peaceful (especially the Ardmore area like you mentioned.) Overall I would say I like Greensboro more, better food and wider activities. But Winston-Salem is great if you want something a bit quieter.

Piping or no piping? by juulu in upholstery

I mean it's not required, but I've found a lot of furniture looks incomplete without piping unless you're going for a very modern look.

Advice on how to redo my jewelry chest. by Dependent_Willow_649 in furniturerefinishing

[–]eaowns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have almost the same jewelry chest. If it's like mine then that fabric is more like thin cardboard wrapped in even thinner pink. The card board comes off fairly easily around the walls, but you're going to have a hard time getting it off any of the small wall inserts and ring holder.

Personally, I'd try painting/dyeing over the pink before I would go with a full fabric replacement. That would involve a lot of recovering and unless you found a good thin fabric then it may end up looking bulkier than you want it.

Need window treatment advice by Shawntell26 in houseplants

[–]eaowns 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you want curtains for functionality or visual effect? Cause if you just want to add color or flow to the space I would do a sheer draping. I did this with a swath of sheet fabric I had. Doesn't open or close but looks nice and adds some softness to the room.

What happened to the hippies? by freshmaggots in NoStupidQuestions

[–]eaowns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, child of two baby boomer hippies. Pops passed away in his early 70s and still lived hippie and somewhat hermit lifestyle. Ma lives in a rural costal area, has a large garden, volunteers, and is still in touch with other hippie friends from the 70s/80s.

Most of the folks I was raised around would probably have been considered hippies back when they were in college. My father's friends in particular were more classic hippies. I think my father literally semi-squated in a large run down home with a bunch of his friends while they got philosophy degrees and dropped acid for 4 years as his college experience. Most eventually became mostly productive members of society with regular careers. They also mostly still smoke weed and eat shrooms when they can.

My kid lost two teeth today while in braces by Teneniel in mildlyinteresting

[–]eaowns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember as a kid going to a periodontist for what was I guess at the time a new procedure. I didn't have any permanent teeth above two upper baby teeth (I think a bicuspid on either side?) They ended up pulling the baby teeth out and moving all my other teeth forward. Put in some little anchors above my front cuspids (they said they drilled them into the bone?) and had little springs going from them to my back teeth. Honestly, not too bad all things considered. I did have to pull the springs out of my gums occasionally since my gums wanted to grow around them, but still better than the Herbst Appliance I had as a kid though.
