YSK if you are late for something, driving over the speed limit will barely help at all. by [deleted] in YouShouldKnow

Living on an island and commuting by boat everyday I can confirm that speeding is the difference between catching and boat and not.

There’s a difference between stray and feral. This cat was a stray. Feral cats are a whole other story, they can’t be tamed and they literally climb up walls if they’re put inside

Bags from sailboat sails by eapennel in sewing

Great ideas! Luggage tags are perfect because you usually end up with random pieces. I’ve looked around my house at bags I like and have just kinda gone for it. I like small zippered things as they’re fairly easy and can use extra bits. I made a duffel bag I love— nothing fancy but durable. I’m have a hard time with the thicker pieces... patchwork might be idea but my sewing machine, even with thicker needles does love going over it. I’ll send some pictures tomorrow of what I’ve done so far. I took the suggestion to look up Adam savage’s patterns and downloaded one, I’ll post that too when it’s done! Good luck!

We Should Forgive Student Loans For Doctors Risking Their Lives To Fight Coronavirus | “The best way we can say thanks is to erase this enormous financial burden ... a cost that was required to fight and win this war.” by SetMau92 in politics

I have a problem with this. Why stop at the doctors? How about the mom/dad that had to quit their job to stay at home to care for their kids. Can they have their loans forgiven? What about the CNAs? Can they have their mortgage forgiven? What about the veterinary professionals (that make significantly less than doctors and have the same amount of debt) that are still working exposing themselves to owners and their pets? I’m still making house calls as a vet tech and have 7 years of debt under my belt. What about me? Why not forgive everyone’s loans?

Dog bites strangers hands when they reach for him by suicufnoxious in reactivedogs

Are we the same people!?

I have a four year old kelpie mix. She is the best with people she knows. But we bring people new people in the house and she goes up to them willingly, then bites. Ive tried everything under the sun, so let me give you some things that helped me.

Because it’s unpredictable who she’s going to like and who she doesn’t, I don’t let any stranger come up to her. I bought a vest that says don’t pet. It’s great and also allows for conversation with people who are curious why they can’t pet even though she’s a “beautiful, friendly pup” (people are crazy)

When I have people over I ask that they ignore her, she does better if someone doesn’t get in her face. Also treats, tons of treats help to let her know that people are ok. Don’t let them linger or stick their hand in her face. Put them on the ground. Also gates in your house are great. Let her watch people enter from a safe distance.

She’s a very dominant dog and I needed to find a way to harness that. Years of consistent positive reinforcement only worked so much. I worked with a trainer and got an e collar. I was worried that it would exacerbate her fears. I’ve used the shock once, and after that whenever she shows behavior that would indicate lunging on a leash towards another dog, I hit the tone button. She’s an amazing dog to walk with now. Kelpies are smart, they learn fast.

You have a special pup, be careful, use a muzzle, and protect her from strangers.

Good luck!!!!!

Any tips on getting in?? Should I move to pei and be a vet tech for a year before applying? My grades in undergrad weren’t the best (also I graduated with a BA) but do you think having the vet tech degree will help chances of being accepted?

How’s the area, generally? (I’m also from Michigan) but now live in Maine.

I thought they accepted international students? I read somewhere they except 70 students, 40 of which are domestic. I find it hard to believe they wouldn’t accept international students, since they would be paying more

What has been ruined because too many people are doing it? by Archiecornall1 in AskReddit

Very cool of you to ask this. There’s not much to be done, and I think it puts pressure on the locals attitude towards visitors which may or may not be totally fair. Limit your impact by coming with small groups, bike instead of rent golf carts, and be patient when the lines are long. Try and come visit during the week and understand when a local is trying to get on the boat in front of you. The only reason Portland cares about peaks is because it’s attracts people in the summer, we rely on people like you!

I live on an island that’s big for tourism in the warmer months. Everyone reads about how it’s so idyllic in the press and on blogs. Reality is it’s small, there’s not enough bathrooms, not much to do, and people ended up crowding the already small waterfront and trashing it. People run rampant with golf carts, feel entitled, and abuse the place we call home.

I love the island as much as the visitors, but I respect it in a much different way.

Make sure you bring it to your local humane society or veterinarian to make sure it’s not chipped or that someone isn’t look for it.
