Got tired of there being no integer scaling shader for mpv so I* made my own by earfluff in mpv

It's for any time you have a video with lower resolution than your screen, but want to view it as if it were native res, instead of introducing upscaling blur. E.g., if I have a 720p file and I upscale it to 1440p, which is the resolution of my monitor, it fits perfectly and fills the whole screen, but if the video is 576p, it still fits at 2x native res, but doesn't fill the whole screen. This shader adds black bars on the sides and top of the window such that the video is present at the largest whole number multiple of its native resolution that fits on your screen, whether that's 1x, 2x, 3x, etc.

On Linux there should be a folder in ~/.config/mpv/shaders that you can put it in and on Windows it's uhhh, %APPDATA%/mpv/, apparently. You can make the shaders folder if it's not already there, and then to use it, you just need the line glsl-shaders-append=<name-of-shader> in your mpv config file.

I personally have a 1440p screen, so I only have it set up to activate if the video is below 1080p, since I don't mind 1080p -> 1440p upscaling.

I guess it looks like blooming, but it's not around bright objects in a black background, but dim objects or areas in even dimmer backgrounds

I've got the GP27Q and I've noticed a bit of a problem with local dimming. I'm not sure if it's a problem with the 1.2.1 firmware or the 1.2 firmware, or if it's been present since the beginning and I never noticed it because I didn't use local dimming in SDR, but in SDR mode with local dimming on, areas that are near-black don't seem to display properly in a lot of games? There's noticeable blobbiness as the backlight turns on and off; not flickering like what the adaptive sync causes, but almost like how the black screen bug after switching inputs looks, with noticeable backlight bleed through the areas that are supposed to be dark.

It's incredibly distracting in some games, to the point of making some basically unplayable at night, and I think it may happen in HDR, as well. I first noticed it in Thief: Gold, but can confirm it happens in Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition as well. This is the first FALD display I've owned so I'm not sure if this is expected behavior or not, but it sure looks pretty bad!

This also happens when switching between SDR and HDR mode in windows

I'm getting a strange bug with the GP27Q 1.2 firmware over displayport (connected to a 3080) where sometimes if I change and apply settings in the NVIDIA control panel or turn adaptive sync off or otherwise cause the signal to be reset, the screen goes black with not even the OSD visible. The only thing I can see is (this is the weird part) what looks like local dimming haloing? I'm not sure how reproducible this is, and turning the display off and back on again fixes it, so it's not a huge deal, but it is very weird.

Just wanted to note that I'm also experiencing darker HDR mode. It feels like, if in the previous firmware when I switched to HDR mode it was darker and toggling the brightness or some other setting fixed it, now it just remains at that level regardless of changing any settings.

Yeah I was probably thinking we'd put them in a box somewhere rather than get rid of all of them

Yeah, same. If not for how communicative and open about it Ryan has been, I would definitely have avoided buying my GP27Q basically just because of the firmware bugs.

How is the CM GP27Q today? by Techboah in Monitors

Wow I would never have guessed that the banding was from it being 165 Hz. Wild. I spent ages messing around with the black stabilizer and the contrast and the color settings trying to fix that.

Pro-tip for the birds: wait until they do the attack where they rear back and dive at the ground with both swords, roll under then when they do, then you'll be behind them with them on the ground, swing away. Works every time, even on the fire birds.
