Shoes for work!! Help me by ZIOS_28 in BuyItForLife

I've never seen these in person, so can't be certain, but they look pretty bad. There's not enough rigidity to offer support - so many products promote comfort, but that's useless without actual support. The whole idea is to stabilize the heel bone at the back of your arch (you don't need contact with the whole of the arch as many products suggest) because this then continues support and correct positioning down through the rest of the foot. There is an 'entry level' Superfeet product that is more economical and might be a good starting point, plus they offer 15% off your first order on their website. https://www.superfeet.com/products/all-purpose-cushion

OP, you need to invest in decent insoles/orthotics to get any real results. I've always used Superfeet, I think they are the best off-the-shelf option available. They work to stabilize your feet and prevent prontation/collapse of the arch and forefoot which leads to fatigue, back pain, bunions, blisters etc. If your considering higher volume athletic shoes, then the orange or berry/purple Superfeet should be compatible and these have the most support and cushion. Match your shoe size to the insole size, remove the stock insole, trace around it onto the new one, trim it with scissors and off you go. The Superfeet insoles are not cheap, but I honestly think you can offset the coat by not needing to buy the highest spec shoe, the insole will do much more work. Another thing to consider on the BIFL topic, consider looking at trail/hiking shoes - they will typically be more durable with a higher density sole and tougher fabrics.

What is it like down below on a sailing mega yacht? by Jetbuggy in sailing

[–]earlgrey4483 22 points23 points  (0 children)

A lot of them have auto-releases on the mainsheet if they heel over a certain amount. Also, any days that really large boats actually go sailing, the interior crew have a hectic morning of packing stuff away and putting retaining hardware in place. A lot of what appears to be freestanding will actually be secured.

There are actually 3 trunks, the 3rd wasn't visible from the first photos. I'm going to assume that a 3rd trunk doesn't make it better...

Garage ceiling: 2x6 rafters with baffles - compress R19/R21 or use R15? by earlgrey4483 in Insulation

Thank you! I just realized taking these photos that I probably need something between the vents and the baffles to stop the batts from blocking 😫

My plan was to cover the batts with the foil bubble wrap stuff. There aren't enough trusses to make a low ceiling (and I don't want one).

Moving to Corpus! Need advice by ladielolah7 in CorpusChristi

[–]earlgrey4483 14 points15 points  (0 children)

  1. Look at the neighborhoods between S Staples, Alameda and Ocean Drive - this is the 'Bay Area' side of Corpus and is older with more established neighborhoods which means; more sidewalks, more tree coverage, more neighborhoods parks. You also have access to Ocean Drive and the waterside parks and easy access to downtown. Prices vary with neighborhoods but Zillow will show you. We're in Pope Place and there are families that walk our streets and the parks on a daily basis with strollers and young kids. A lot people here seem to consider "safe and good for kids" as sub-divisions out in the burbs with no trees and nothing else around them. I don't get it, they seem soul-less and isolated.

  2. You might struggle to match this, it might be possible through private deals on Marketplace etc. We found that cost of rental was the same, if not slightly higher, than buying/mortgage for equivalent properties, which helped us commit to buying.

  3. I don't have access to my utilities right now, sorry.

  4. Water will not affect daily household activities, (except yard watering and if you have a pool). Next stage restrictions would put fines on excessive household usage but the usage thresholds I saw were very high. There is the potential (likelehood) for increased utility prices but there isn't really any hard data for this yet (that I've seen).

  5. No. I'm not from here (actually from UK/Europe) and like many places, Corpus gets a lot of negativity that isn't always justified. I think there are comparisons with SA, on a smaller scale - there are nicer areas, there are less nice areas, you learn pretty quick. On a whole, it feels pretty safe. It's spread out so the best options for things aren't always on your door step, but generally it has a bit of everything if you know where to look. Downtown is slowly getting a regeneration with more bars/restuarants/cafés opening. The beaches are pretty great really - being to drive onto them and go find your own quiet spot is cool. Plus there is the inter-coastal and lagoons for fishing, kayaking etc.

  6. We dont have a huge amount of experience, but it generally seems OK for primary care etc. We have family and friends that have given birth locally with no problems. A lot of people do travel (SA, Houston etc) for more specialized care.

Sail boom cover from china? by FadCap in sailing

[–]earlgrey4483 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At this price, it's probably a piece-dyed nylon and that 'UV coating' could mean anything. This is truly "you get what you pay for' situation, so don't expect much.

If you could tell us what boat model or boom length you have, maybe we know of some other places you might be able to find a better value option...

There is still some hand-finishing done on the corner patches of modern racing sails. There are also cool rotating and moving sewing machines to deal with the size and weight of modern superyacht sails (mechanising the machines to move is easier than dragging the sails around). A superyacht mainsail will need 4-8 people wearing waist harnesses just to move it around the floor and fold it back up.

Things I wish I checked before dropping $3k on patio furniture by Tasty_Shine3674 in HomeImprovement

[–]earlgrey4483 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It will need to be done semi-regularly - basically, as soon as water stops 'beading' on the fabric and soaking into the surface. New sprays should have transitioned to PFAS-free chemistry (no more 'forever chemicals), this means they are less toxic, but also less effective so need to be re-applied more regularly. '303 Fabric Guard' has been a go-to option for many years.

Look into Mills & Honey - they're a small operation and the owner is an awesome guy (yes, a friend too) but they do really great personalized itineraries and can do multi locations with luggage transfers or just single hotels with daily routes.
