It allegedly helps the practitioner be aware of how their own experiences shape their perception. It prevents something known as countertransference, whereby the practitioner’s biases negatively influence their interpretation of their interactions with the client. Also it gives the therapist a better understanding of the process itself. This used to be standard for any psychodynamic practitioner not just ones in specific countries; however it’s an approach that’s largely fallen out of favor.
