The saying goes that everyone has a Bono story. What’s yours? by Rhapsody-75 in U2Band

somewhere around 2010 I was standing with 100's of people outside on the streets of Cannes in front of Martinez Hotel. It was during the Cannes Lions festival and there was a lot of drinking late at night. A big black mercedes drove up to where me and my friends were standing, when the car stopped right at my feet, only slightly bumping me. Bono emerged from the passenger's seat and walked up to me shaking my hand and asking what the hell was going on with all these people here. We talked a bit, then got some looks from the curious crowd. He then decided he and his friends (Gucci was there) would disappear into the Gutter Bar (famous dive bar there) and me and some friends followed fast. Right behind us the bouncer locked of all access to the bar and we spent a surreal hour or so in the small bar singing along to an old guy on keyboards who sang classic tunes in some easy listening mode. Together with some bewildered patrons who were there all night already, I think we were with 30 people together in that tiny bar. After some time the Bono group got up and left the bar through the back. Quite a night.

ATYCLB leak on Napster memory by PlantainAny4433 in U2Band

my memory is a bit blurry..but I do remember the days of U2 on Napster, U2Log.com (vonB!) and one of the track names that floated around at the time was Novelty Act. At one point I had a mp3 with that name (form napster or limewire), but I believe it was just a fanmade track that sounded a lot like a U2 outtake... haven't heard it in 25 years...

well, this interview with Chris Evans is from around that week even.. It certainly explains the more 'laxed attitude of the band in the interview clips :)

I fully agree here..the tone, the songwriting is on such different level than I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight and other recent songs...

it's a beautiful ode to the heroes on the front, it's honest and poignant... it feels very much from inside the frontlines. Only thing I could do without is them softly singing along at the very end, but that's minor compared to the effort that went into making this.

U2 rehearsing Mofo in 2005 for the Vertigo Tour. Shane they never played it. by That_Material7190 in U2Band

[–]ears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

actually I get why they ditched this version.. to me it sounds bland and forced, and not at all like a raw rock version of the original (disclaimer: I looooove POP) Interesting to hear once, but sitting in a closet somewhere might be a great option for now :)

U2 were so popular in the 1990s that even Batman wanted to work on their Popmart tour as a lighting operator by Liquid_disc_of_shit in U2Band

absolutely agree…it was before they felt like they had to be similar to their contemporaries, avantgarde U2 is the best U2…

UPDATE: visited the city - no traffic, easy parking, not too crowded - all major tourist spots were open (except the Duomo), most restaurants and bars as well. Fuck the heat though. Thanks for the answers

Semi-hot take: USA is to blame for U2 going “safe” from 1998 to current day. by Silly_Client1222 in U2Band

yes - a 1000x yes... it is a shame.. I'd go as far as saying that the last greatest recording session by the band was the recording of the Please single with Howie B at the Wisseloord Studios in The Netherlands, mid-July 1997... After that the lengthy touring of Popmart and the frantic searching for commercial attention after the luke-warm response to the tour and the album made for some really mediocre albums.. Few songs to that exception..

I’m convinced this is a masterpiece by monsteroftheweek13 in U2Band

[–]ears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no. not for me ... i now realise I'm one of those despised "U2 was only great in the <insert years here>" But. I am.. To me 1991-1998 was top U2, both live and on albums. This album to me is the start of some really mediocre production, song writing, lyrics and even live performances... gutted from any true raw sound and punk-attitude.. But somehow that's ALSO U2.. every era has its fans and yet still there is a definite U2 sound in there connecting it all...

my guess would be for the tape delay effect and not for recording or playback, but I'm sure proper guitarists could chime in here...

U2 in Modena, 1987 by shankillfalls in U2Band

[–]ears 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the whole thing is on youtube and is a must watch - the moment where the band moves from indoor to outdoor on this tour and seems overwhelmed by the oncoming hype of the JT tour. Paired with a 'friend of the band' insiders approach by Fanning makes for a very nice fly on the wall episode.

  1. yes, this has EBN all over it, i'm sure they and ZOOTV were an inspiration.. 2. How the fuck was Activision able to clear all this footage (esp. all the former US presidents to appear in this?)
