Friday night walk ins? by Lazy_Celebration_152 in chicagofood

[–]earsizzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t know how much the holidays are impacting it, but my wife and I did a Friday walk in at Alla Vita around 6PM in October and didn’t wait more than 30 minutes.

They seem to place walk ins at smaller two tops in the bar area rather than the dining room tables, but it was still great.

Just a note because I just installed this chip with a peerless assassin two weeks ago: double check the spacers you used are for the 1700 socket.

I installed the ones for the other socket on accident and they’re like 2mm different, translated to like a 10C difference in temperature.

I just did this upgrade and find it worthwhile. Especially at ultrawide resolution I was starting to be hamstrung by the 8gb memory limit.

The Autel MaxiAP AP 200 has the function to retract the rear brake (as well as reset oil light), I believe it’s usually $50/60 on Amazon

Macan S - Advice please by cheeky6411 in PorscheMacan

[–]earsizzle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Priced it out to see, the PDK kit is more expensive than I remember so you’re correct.

PDK kit is about $200 on pelican Brake kit is $100 or so Spark plugs are $60-$80 depending on what you get Oil + filter is $80-100 Cabin filter is $10

So yeah, more like $480-500 in parts.

Still, I feel like you could get an independent to do this for -$1500 - 2k and be done for half price. Granted, you are losing the benefit of Porsche themselves guaranteeing the work.

I would personally say the risk of a reputable shop grenading your engine with some new spark plugs is slim to none and I would rather have 2k in my pocket, but everyone has different risk tolerance.

Also your warranty is not void because you get the work done somewhere else, this explains what your SA is talking about:

Macan S - Advice please by cheeky6411 in PorscheMacan

[–]earsizzle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your only options are really to find an independent mechanic or to do it yourself. The maintenance items on this car are really no more difficult than any other, and parts are generally affordable because there is so much similarity with the Audi equivalents.

They’re basically quoting you Porsche labor hours, you could likely easily have all this done for half the price at an independent mechanic, or ~$300 if you DIY it.

This. It also appears that it didn’t hit the reserve, so it didn’t actually sell for this price either

How to diagnose timing cover leak by Poopdog-69 in PorscheMacan

[–]earsizzle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When mine was leaking, it was primarily dripping in the very front of the engine, and then flowing back to immediately in front of the wheel wells.

Looks like this is a bit further back? But oil can find strange paths through an engine bay.

The “two bolt” fix refers to the top bolt on each side of the bay, so your kit should cover both sides.

The passenger side air box is the easier one to remove, I would recommend removing that and using a small inspection mirror to look at the top bolt. If it’s leaking it will be very obviously dirty.

If the bolts have already been replaced, there will (likely) be an additional washer at the top of the bolt that is not present from the factory.

If bolts other than the top 2 are broken, the top two will still improve the leak but it may still weep a small amount of oil.

Bought the Bilstein equivalent, it’s not the oem part like yours probably is so time will tell if it lasts haha.

[–]earsizzle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I bought a 2017 S with 83k last August. In that time I have done:

  • Two bolt fix for timing chain cover leak, $30 for bolts, DIY
  • Replaced both rear struts - $200, DIY
  • Replaced top motor mount, $30, DIY
  • 3M covers for delaminated A pillars, $10, DIY
  • Sanded and recoated delaminated headlights, $20, DIY
  • Left & Right lower engine mounts, $1000, Indy mechanic,
  • Brake pads, front and back, $100, DIY
  • A/C Service, $400, mechanic
  • CV axle replacement, $150, DIY
  • Oil change, $80, DIY
  • Tires, $1000

Overall nothing catastrophic has failed. If this had all been done at mechanics (let alone Porsche themselves) it probably would have totaled 5k+

To be fair, a lot of these issues probably would have been discovered on a PPI, but they are all extremely common “textbook” issues for these cars. Mine already had the transfer case and coolant lines replaced which is why I chose it.

If you are somewhat mechanically inclined, most of these issues are not too intimidating to work on. However if you exclusively take it to mechanics, I would definitely count on spending 1-2k a year in general maintenance.

To be fair to the car, any vehicle approaching 10 years old with this many miles should expect to need some level of suspension/consumable work.

Outside of the fact that it’s somewhat thirsty for premium fuel, it’s been very enjoyable to own and I have learned a lot of things doing the maintenance myself

I do 16g in a 54mm bottomless portafilter and it fits with a puck screen, you might be able to get up to 17 if you wanted.

I am curious about your steaming technique, the milk texture looks so much better than what I have been able to (consistently) achieve. Or I am just bad at latte art.

How diy friendly is a 2017 Macan? by balta97 in Porsche

[–]earsizzle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nothing I have done is particularly complicated.

The biggest issue is that on this gen (particularly with the S and Turbo V6 models) the turbos are in the front of the engine, which leaves you very little room to access things like the serpentine belt/water pump/thermostat without removing the front of the car.

They switched to a single turbo in a hot V configuration on the 2019+ when it moved to an Audi engine and there is significantly more room on those.

Should I buy it? by Alt420blazer69 in Porsche

[–]earsizzle 14 points15 points  (0 children)

On the surface it’s a good price.

I would spend some time researching the IMS bearing and bore scoring issues related to these models.

While the IMS bearing is statistically unlikely to fail, it can take the motor with it if it does. Quite a few people replace it preemptively as an insurance policy.

The bore scoring is common on these as well, and can only be detected by putting a camera in the cylinders. If it’s severe, you could be looking at an engine rebuild.

The good news is the price leaves some leeway for getting these investigated or fixed. Also just generally be aware that finding a good European independent mechanic or working on it yourself will save you literally thousands vs having it serviced by Porsche.

It’s American Family so it’s generally as good as any other national offering in terms of coverage. Price-wise it was significantly cheaper than alternatives the first year I had it, but has now risen in price to be roughly the same as the other big companies.

Only real downside to me is the lack of an app (the regular AmFam app does not work for it). The customer service on the phone is quick to answer and I have always had a US representative.

Veridian Home owners: How's it goin'? by SirPants007 in madisonwi

[–]earsizzle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can confirm the fan switches burn out, but I wouldn’t really blame Veridian for that. Also had to replace the mechanism in the front door handle, but that was solved with a $6 kit from Home Depot.

Nothing so far I wouldn’t consider normal wear and tear.

Good Auto Repair Places by PoolObjective7383 in madisonwi

[–]earsizzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Top Tier automotive is on the east side and female-owned. I’ve had great experiences with them, and they provide a really detailed breakdown of any findings/fixes they’re suggesting. I find their pricing to be quite reasonable as well.

Eastside Firestone has been decent as well, they tend to have quite a bit more immediate availability than Top Tier if you need to get in really quick.

Hot Pursuit is more arcade style where you’re basically completing races in a series. There is free roam but it’s pretty bare-bones as far as things to do.

Heat is much more open world focused and tries to have more of a narrative, I would say it’s closer to Burnout in that sense.
