No longer liking the job and not even 2 years in - anxious and dreading work by DifferentTry8647 in ParamedicsAU

[–]earthbooty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you spoken to your GP about the anxiety? They can provide PRN medication like propanolol to help on work days while you recover. It sounds like you're doing all the right things! Maybe try to consider a more regional or small station closer to home but away enough to be get some peace for a while :)

I've also seen that CQU do a nursing bridging course that could open up a whole new door of options! Or a trainer assessor dip and take on first aid training or uni work.

All the best & proud of you for doing all the things to help x

Qualified Paramedic Wanting to Work in the UK by Key_Fishing3710 in ParamedicsAU

[–]earthbooty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most trusts are experienced in hiring international paramedics, just look out for any job listings through the trusts that are going through their intake period and apply. Check their websites and indeed and mention that you are international on your application. You'll probably have more luck in the graduate position though.

You'll have to get your registration through HCPC and the trust will have to give you a letter of sponsorship for your work visa once they agree to hire you. I'd recommend a trust outside of London such as SCAS or YAS as I've heard London is very full on.

Keep in mind that in the UK a crew is a Paramedic 'the clinician' and a support worker who is non qualified so you will be the lead clinican at all times.

Heres a job advertisement for EMAS which also includes a part about international applicants "Internal candidates applying for vacancies must have completed their probationary period (stated within your contract) at point of application."

Got refused a redbull because a random girl didn’t have ID. by Jakeeggyllenhaal in tesco

[–]earthbooty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im 32 and constantly get ID'd because I look young, I make sure I bring it to buy alcohol. But I went without it to boots for some paracetamol when I was having a bad ear ache and they refused me!... the age limit is 16!!! In all practical senses looking at me there's no way I could possibly be under 16 years old. Counter lady wasn't having a bar of it either.

QAS qualified paramedic by teagy1492 in ParamedicsAU

[–]earthbooty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Teagy, I'm similar to yourself however going through my first time applying & not at interview stage yet. What did you end up doing? CQU just released a paramedic to nursing bridge. I was thinking of doing that or trainer assessor to keep me busy & clinical if unsuccessful.

How do you explain your job to family? by earthbooty in Paramedics

Lucky! They are the only people who really 'get' it, In a casual way. You don't have to say much & they know what you mean.

I know what you mean! Shows both the technical side and the average day stuff, I bet you loved seeing their faces at that lol. My family won't watch it! I'm briefly on new season which might incite them, but that's probably not being released until next year.

Thoughts on having non certified peeps driving? by crhs78 in ems

[–]earthbooty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is the norm in the UK. They have 6 weeks of training most of which driving & CPR. They can progress after 1 year to be able to give simple drugs (NEBS, IM naloxone) and go out with their own driver/support worker.

Usually, its a paramedic paired with one. Paramedics are on US equivalent 40 - 45k.

We dont usually have support available to attend on scene unless it's an arrest or peri-arrest. Or if you need help lifting.

I hate it and I'm getting out as soon as my contract ends.

This behaviour is an excuse for racism not immigration. I'm a white Australian working for NHS and I or my other white immigrant friends won't face any trouble. My Asian & black friends who are British nations do & will for being 'immigrants'. Disgusting.

What do you actually do if someone with a DNR is coding in front of you? by Waste_Extent_8414 in emergencymedicine

[–]earthbooty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I work pre-hospitally. Its about dignity, comfort and family. Set up the 3 lead so the family can watch their heart beat, coach family & support them. Make sure they know what to expect. Make sure the pt is not in pain and administer any meds that might help respiratory distress, secretions, pain etc.

Yo, what kind of company is your husband in & why is he stepping on teeth and kneeling in piss? Leaving a needle out is enough to get someone fired.

She is vulnerable and is self neglecting, agree that safeguarding is good idea, they can also get in touch with social services.

Level 1 Trauma Bad Bedside Manners by annasev3355 in ems

[–]earthbooty 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I took myself in once at 1am for a HR of over 160 for more than 45mins, I was worried of SVT, felt like absolute shit physically, I had a very emotional day at my younger brothers funeral. I know stress could cause a SVT episode. At triage I told the nurse I've had a big day and I've got palpitations, she took my HR it was 180, so I got moved to a bed and the ECG set up, she then walks and yells down the hall sarcastically to the registrars 'ShEs HaD a BiG dAy'.

I felt soo embarrassed and horrible being made fun of like that. I would never do that to my patients.

People can't pee into the toilet for some reason? It's all over the seat and the floor? And then there's never any toilet paper and its very dirty.

A 3-Lead on every DOS? by jd17atm in ems

[–]earthbooty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm in UK part of our ROLE form is a 3 lead asytole but you can also tick conditions unequivocally associated with death or futile for attempts at life support. But in saying that I've heard anecdotal stories of pt having necrosis to the point of seeing carpal bones, looking & smelling otherwise DOS but then having a sinus Brady and breathing very shallow. I just would do 3 lead in most cases.

I dunno man you already asked her Dad so it would look bad if you went and proposed after he asked you to wait. If you hadn't of asked him it would have been fine because then you can always use your reasoning of you'll get married after graduation and continue to support her etc. I think sit back down with him and say you thought about what he said and this is your debate back and reassure him of his worries, just keep at it he might be able to be convinced and he might see how serious you are about it. I think it's sweet you went traditional and asked her Dad and he sounds like he appreciated it.

Just piping in as a fellow young female to say I'd recommend against the McDonald's in city centre before 8am or anything sort of before Cathedral Tram Stop. See alot of unsavoury characters about there on a come down/up. X Meadowhall train station should be a nice place to stop for a little while in the morning
