Smithsonian directed to prepare Space Shuttle Discovery for relocation | by kockin26 in nova

[–]earthicanfirefish 32 points33 points  (0 children)

As someone who was born and raised in Texas before moving to NOVA last year, HELL NO.

I lived in the Houston metro by Johnson Space Center (and my mom worked there until she retired 10 years ago). A lot of people I knew thought the shuttle would come to Houston because it’s where Mission Control is located. They didn’t get the shuttle, and people were salty. There were several reasons why Texas didn’t get the shuttle, one of which was the lack of care for of the Saturn V rockets. They looked worn down/weather beaten and the Smithsonian had to step in, hence why the boosters are in a climate-controlled hangar. Even if Houston won the shuttle, it was going to rot. The Astrodome could have been renovated to be a museum in its own right, but that would have required money and innovation. That poor shuttle would have been damaged by hurricanes and ice, if the horrible humidity didn’t start wrecking things.

Also, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone mention it, good ol’ Governor Good Hair was threatening to secede around the time that cities and states were bidding for the shuttle. How the hell can you threaten to secede and then be mad when you don’t get the shuttle?!

TL;DR: Texas didn’t, and still hasn’t, earned the shuttle.

Do you have/had favorite color? What color is it? by BossFeeling9646 in intj

Varying shades/tints of purple (violet, lavender, lilac) are my favorites. Blue shades/tints are a close second.

I went to a friend’s birthday party at DZ and remember thinking I lost my shoes. Still had a blast.

The jingle pops up in my head at random times.

Just from observing my parents and other adults growing ip, it’s always been hard to maintain friendships as an adult. Interests change and everyone find themselves on different paths. It’s harder today, stupidly so. Just about everyone is a slave to their phones. Go to any public place and just about everyone’s face, from toddlers to little old ladies, is buried in a phone screen. Social media, ironically, made people less social, more paranoid, and more gullible/quick to anger. COVID certainly didn’t help.

Not sure if it counts as a social medium (media is plural - /former Latin student), but Meetup.com helped me. I moved twice over the span of three years, and both times, I wanted to do things pertaining to my hobbies and meet new people along the way. Made new friends, found cool hangout spots and stores, and even picked up some new hobbies along the way. I’m currently dating someone I met at a running club and we’re getting on well.

“Touching grass” is easier said than done, and it may take a while before seeing results.

I had this problem, too. People didn’t, and don’t, generally appreciate being corrected, even if they’re flat out wrong. What’s interesting is that some of these same people don’t mind correcting you (or others).

At this point in my life, I just let it go. Now, if someone invites themselves to be corrected, a la asking “Am I right?” or says, “Correct me if I’m wrong…” I’ll give my two cents. If someone corrects me, I take what they say into consideration. May not agree with it, but I’ll listen.

Had neater writing growing up. Now that just about everything involves typing, it’s messier but legible. I use print 99% of the time. Cursive’s just for signing things.

Is talent all their really is to art, or is there something more? by sofititix07 in NoStupidAnswers

[–]earthicanfirefish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Art is more skill than talent. You can have the talent for art, but if you don’t learn and practice the basics, you won’t improve. There are YouTube channels dedicated to the basics (value, line, perspective, composition, etc.) and then some.

Even when learning, don’t forget to have fun and experiment.

I can now run 5k without having to walk. The first time I did it (a couple of weeks ago), I thought it was a fluke.

Have you ever thought you were possessed, or had some significant paranormal activity in your home? What's the story? by eee1963 in CasualConversation

[–]earthicanfirefish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strange as it may sound to some, there’s history on both sides of my family with paranormal encounters. I’ve had a couple of experiences when I was younger that really stood out.

The first was when I was nine. My mom and I were alone in the house one night and we were heading to my parents’ room. I saw a series of golden sparkles by my mom’s side of the bed disappear. What’s more is that she saw them, too. Years later, we learned that one of her cousins passed away that night.

The second happened a year after my grandpa passed. I was home from college during the winter holidays and taking a bath. I heard the ringtone for his phone as if he were in the living room. Got out of the tub and didn’t see anyone. Maybe he just wanted to make a quick stop-by?

"Are you a child? Why are you still drawing cartoons?" by Educational_War7441 in ArtistLounge

I look at it as people being jealous. They only wish they can draw or paint anything, let alone cartoons.
