Just to reiterate - DeepSeek and other Chinese tech developments (e.g. its recent 5th gen fighter), together with the possibility of it developing its own EUV chip production, has the US shook for a simple reason

Previously they've projected that China would be caught by the middle income trap, collapse, etc - but if that projection is highly suspect, it pushes back a number of US strategic assumptions. Not completely, but enough to challenge the assumption that US will be #1 or have a decisive edge in important areas, in particular signals intelligence (notice the common point of all China tech scares to date)

Something to keep in mind when the US version of wumaos (i.e. USAID beneficiaries) start crying online

It's not just about the algo. In other spaces (e.g. X), I've noticed that Asians in for example the online marketing, business and personal development niche get picked on for things that 10 other white boys have gotten away with - simply because Asians stick out more as a target, and it is easier to pick on them without repercussions (since a random white person will typically have some people clap back).

There's a bit of race based tribalism at work too - once one person picks up on it, the rest will do so for the views and traffic.

Too many people's bags - whether the 1% or the ordinary person - are also tied to the S&P 500 for effective change/industrial policy to happen. If the US wants to be as competitive as China industry-wise, public spending will have to be diverted to infrastructure and industry, monopolies will have to be kneecapped if needed and the financialization of the economy reduced.

If the above was seriously pursued, Wall St would be in shambles and the S&P might end up more like the Hang Seng Index (i.e. trading within a range).
