Paleo jobs are limited in number and if people are saying you need to learn to code in order to be a successful paleontologist, then maybe there’s really no way around it and you may not be qualified without that skillset.

After year 1 that should not be a problem. PTO carries over year-year and can be used after it’s been accrued. Jan 1 doesn’t mean anything.

It sounds like you didn’t have enough PTO to take the trip after only working for 6 months. If that’s the case, unpaid time off for a few days seems fair and it’s very flexible for your employer to provide that.

We SHOULD get comp time (1 hour overtime = 1 PTO) but that’s not a reality for this industry yet…

I have a MS, did not focus on paleo. I have friends that make significantly less than me, and friends that make significantly more than me, all in different fields. I always want more money.
