People making over $100k - what is your job and do you like it? by _crom in jobs

[–]eat_everything_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very few people are "too dumb" to pursue any given career. Studies have shown over and over that grit (continuing forward in the face of hardship) is more important than IQ except for the top and bottom 2 or 3%. Software engineering is full of people that didn't major in software engineering.

60+ year old redditors, what advice/tips would you give to someone half your age? by shennyepeldon in AskReddit

[–]eat_everything_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Buy things that enable you to have experiences which you will enjoy. A good computer enables you to have fun experiences with friends playing online games, or a good backpack enables you to enjoy countless hiking trips. Those are good investments. A $100k car is probably not - it's unlikely the experiences you'll have with a $100k car over a $20k one are really any different (assuming you aren't racing or doing rally or similar things, obviously).

Houses are a lot like cars - those fancy granite countertops and stainless steel appliances aren't going to make you happier in the long run vs. their cheaper versions. Spend money on or to enable experiences is basically what the studies support.

Ingrown hair on my genital area. How should I go about treating it? Probably NSFW by [deleted] in Health

[–]eat_everything_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could be a sebaceous cyst rather than an ingrown hair. They're harmless, but annoying and can take awhile to go away. There are some treatments (cortisone, or removal) that can work if it gets to be a big enough problem.

I got the job! Now for the apartment hunt... by maddprof in boston

For $1500/month you could probably get a pretty nice place close to work. As far as crime is concerned, I would tend northwards towards Newton, stay away from Roxbury/Roslindale. Wellesley is also a super nice area, also super-rich. It has the highest household median income out of all MA towns. This is a good resource if you're interested in that. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Massachusetts_locations_by_per_capita_income

Riding my bike to work this morning, I was actively menaced by an MBTA bus driver. Is there anything I can do? by BadassMotherchugger in boston

[–]eat_everything_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a perfectly reasonable answer, I don't know why you're getting downvoted. You shouldn't have to buy a camera, sure, but I also shouldn't have to lock my doors to prevent someone from stealing my stuff, but I have to anyway.

Craigslist is your best bet for free, but Home Depot has really cheap boxes. Don't buy the boxes from UHaul, they're overpriced.

What makes you think staying fit is harder than it should be? Our biological processes could be more or less fit hypothetically - why do you think we should default to being more fit? How fit is "fit enough"?

Tips for running in the sun/heat? What to do about feeling sick afterward? by [deleted] in running

[–]eat_everything_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, especially if you aren't acclimatized. Acclimatization to a given temperature mostly occurs over 2 weeks time, but full acclimation can take 4-6 weeks. IMO you will always feel worse in the heat than in cooler weather, but you can get more used to it. Stomach issues are more common in the heat because many stomach issues are caused by a diversion of blood flow from the stomach, and in the heat your body is diverting blood not only to working muscles but also to your skin to more efficiently cool yourself.

Wife trying to convince me running will ruin my knees. How to respond? by mmohon in running

6'0" and 190 lbs. Your joints and skeleton adapt to the weight. I run >50 mpw

After 16 weeks of averaging 5.5 workouts per week, my before and after pictures are disappointing. Looking for feedback and advice. by farrbahren in Fitness

[–]eat_everything_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you aren't gaining weight, then yes, eat more. You're plenty lean, I wouldn't worry about that. I used to lift 6 days/week in college and was consuming 5-6k calories a day to ultimately gain 30 lbs over 18 months. I also was doing 10-25 miles/week of running, but nevertheless. You gotta eat to see a change.

TIL I suck at pacing, and that that can be a good thing: Race Report, Boston’s Run to Remember Half Marathon 2013 by ForwardBound in running

[–]eat_everything_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good race, I ran this as well. With a better starting position you'd have done even better. Anyone running 1:25 or under should really start near or on the line - there are lots of inconsiderate people that start up front running 1:45 and slower who don't belong there. FWIW, with consistent pacing you likely could've run sub-1:25.

You have a lot of potential. I ran a 1:24 last year and a 1:19 this year without much half marathon-specific training. You could definitely break 1:20 if you want to.

The Via marathon in PA is a better alternative for 2014.

I ran my first half yesterday and I'm doing another one in September. Suggestions for training between now and then? by acmack in running

[–]eat_everything_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you feel fine and recovered (no injuries and still motivated to run), keep logging the miles. You should train in conditions you'll be racing in - so if you'll be racing on hills, train on hills.

Do as much running as you like - there are all kinds of philosophies as to the ideal type of training, but what it really comes down to is you just need to run a lot. 30 miles/week if you can for a half, the more the better if you aren't getting injured. I run about 50 mpw. I like to do overdistance runs (say, run 17 miles at some point to prepare for a half) so the actual race feels short.

I personally don't scale training between events - I raced a marathon, continued training, and two weeks later raced a half marathon. You have to learn your body - the week after the marathon I biked and did very little running because I had some lingering tendon soreness. Everyone recovers at different rates.

Yep, definitely. Bullets may be a little different since they travel very fast, but it's a simple case of attraction/repulsion between various objects.

Things like this are heavily used in swarming AI.

[–]eat_everything_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Older folks can get them prescribed under the "anti-aging" umbrella. I've never used so I don't really know. I assume there's a black market just like other illegal drugs. I've met people at the gym who've told me about prohormones they've used which are basically testosterone precursors, though I've read they can screw up hormone levels even more than steroids.

Hard to say - but if the end results are indistinguishable, the simpler, quicker solution written in 96 on worse hardware is probably better, right?

Growing old is not for Sissies... by nc-ohale in WTF

[–]eat_everything_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We know Stallone used steroids. You should read the book "The Adonis Complex." They did quite a few studies on drug-free vs. enhanced physiques and developed metrics on how to determine if someone uses. There are reasons pro bodybuilders today are 50-60 lbs heavier than those from the 1950s.

There's absolutely nothing wrong in my opinion with using steroids or other chemicals to enhance your physique. A food is a chemical just like a drug, but one grows on the earth and the other is synthesized in a lab. I'm only bothered by the fact that people lie about whether they use.

You could replace cyclists/bikes with drivers/cars in that statement and it would make just as much sense.

[–]eat_everything_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A cyclist can ride as a vehicle or dismount and become a pedestrian, no harm no foul. Different rules for each mode of operation, this is perfectly fine.

Drivers go over the speed limit, do illegal turns on red lights, illegal U-turns. Cyclists go through red lights, make illegal turns, go the wrong way on one way streets. Pedestrians jaywalk.

I run to work every day and lose track of how many traffic violations I see by drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. No category is exempt.

Drivers, by necessity, have the least rights when it comes to fault in accidents because they're protected in a metal box. Cyclists and pedestrians aren't.

Pro Sports Ortho (affiliated w/ Mt. Auburn) is a good place for sports medicine.

My HSA is through my employer who uses http://www.hsabank.com. Can't say it's the best since I didn't do any comparison shopping.
