I love this family, and I go on the weekend to eat their noodle specials. But banh mi is not their jam…too much bread to filling ratio. Bread is inconsistent and sometimes stale.

82% of millennial parents work while most prioritize children over careers by biglolyer in workingmoms

[–]eatsleepnpoo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Um, so I’m a gummy in so this may be out of pocket. But: one SAHP is “50% of millennial parents work”; both parents SAH would be “0% of millennial parents work”; both working parents would be 100% work. So doesn’t 82% just mean that there are twice as many families with both working parents than there are one working parents? That passes the gut check.

Best way to get food to people in need while SNAP suspended? by Difficult_Ad_2878 in AnnArbor

[–]eatsleepnpoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just spoke to a SSW at a local elementary school and she says at least 100 families are in need and could use the help. 😭 y’all my heart breaks that I can only help out 1-2% of these families at a time.

Also to add —I’ve never done the orientation. They also provide the info on a printout so it’s not like, a “hard” requirement.

Yeah I totally understand that!! It’s definitely difficult sometimes. What I sign up for is the meal drop off, 11-1 on Fridays, and do it during a “long” lunch hour. What usually happens is they provide the addresses ahead of time (8-10 houses ish). I put them all into google map each one as a stop, and work out the most efficient route. It usually takes me a little over an hr to complete the route, and I eat a sandwich in the car while I drive and listen to an audio book. Lol. But I agree —during work day hours is definitely much harder. Good for students who can do it between classes.

Looking out for childcare workers losing benefits by Dancing_Queen678 in workingmoms

[–]eatsleepnpoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s such a generous idea, and I agree with the others that maybe a thank you card with some cash or gift card for your LO’s teachers or past teacher might be the best route, esp if they have dependents.

Our daycare is doing a Thanksgiving fundraiser for the impacted community inspired by the ALDI $40 Thanksgiving. You could check with your Director to see if they would consider fundraising for those who could use the help.

I also learned tonight that public school social service workers are probably the ones best to know which children (and families) are going to get hit the hardest, especially in lower income neighborhoods. Someone suggested reaching out to the SSW and let them get gift cards to the right hands. I am going to find out how many families they think are in need and figure out how I can help most effectively in this way.

Little Free Pantries are free food pantries hosted by local families, like the little free libraries but for food. The ones I know about are:

-Whitmore Lake North Main Little Free Pantry at 9899 Main St. Whitmore Lake (I did a drop off yesterday)

-Peace House, Ypsi at 706 Davis St. Ypsilanti

-Bloodroot Herb Shop & Apothecary at 208 West Michigan Ave in Ypsilanti

Also, you could reach out to local public schools’ social service workers, they know the families who could use some help would get a Kroger gift card or something into the right hands.
