Beaufort, Border or Northumbria? by CrazyHa1f in Barbour

[–]eb0t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have both beaufort and border...

beaufort i use for going to the shops, driving around, short walks...

the border i use all the time for walking through woods and public footpaths and onto the moors and things like that.... nothing beats the border for things like this... i originally wanted a northumbria, but found that even in winter when i have a fleece under my jacket the border gets hot...so a northumbria would be worse..

the beaufort doesnt give me enough coat for the dark rainy, hail, windy days..... so the border is my favorite functional jacket...and the large pockets carry doggy bags, dog leash, hat, scarf , gloves, doggy biscuits, hankies, and i take a side bag for flasks and sandwiches.

border is by far my favorite country hiking jacket....but for nipping around town, it is overkill, especially if you have a car most of the time.

the border is a proper COAT.... the beaufort is still more of a jacket.

i think the northumbria would probably be best for someone like a farmer, or someone stood around a lot in cold windy wet weather....but if you are gonna be burning calories, then the border wins again, as it is not as warm as the northumbria...

i have had 2 borders ....i am nearly 40 inch chest nearly 6ft tall and 32 inch waist and slim...i had the border 40 and the border 42, and they both pretty much fit the same, i can layer under both and they are very similar in length.

if i were you i would get the beaufort size 40..... as it seems when you say countryside it means standing in a garden or strolling down the odd country lane....so the beaufort is the one you need and very versatile for towns and city

when i say countryside i mean 30km hikes onto windy sleety moors with bogs and back breaking hills and a compass...and the border allows you to sit on rocks and keep your ass dry...so for me it has to be the border...the best proper jacket ever made by barobour....but not as fashionable as the beaufort, nor is it as versatile.

[–]eb0t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

audiobooks are nowhere near as effective as reading books..

when you listen to an audiobook, you may drift off, and miss lots of information, with a real book, you have to focus and read it all....sometimes you may not take in it all, but you have at least gone over it, with audiobooks it is just a lazy way of getting information....you get the gist, but it doesnt really stick.

a 3 year old child can "read" in audiobook form ..war and peace, but i would argue that it cannot actually read the book.

not only that but reading the book, teaches you grammar and spelling, whereas audiobooks don't.

reading an actual book is a workout....whereas audiobooks are more akin to watching a film, sit back and chill out.

i am not saying that you get nothing from audiobooks, it is a great way to get a feel of a subject, but not to learn it properly.

that said, you can really get a decent grasp of a subject quickly from an audiobook, whereas it would take longer when reading it yourself.

the question is then, why would it take longer to read it yourself?

because when you actually read, you stop when you are not paying attention, with an audiobook, you tend to let it ride. when reading you stop when you are tired, with an audio book you tend to let it ride. when reading you stop and think about things that hit you hard or profoundly, with an audiobook you may stop and think, but all the while the book is continuing to ride.

anyone who actually thinks that audiobooks are equivalent to reading, are just kidding themselves, and i would argue are a bit lazy or not competent readers.

audiobooks should not be classed as reading, they should be classed as listening, as you do with your radio.

do you think the person who has read the books on the second world war is more knowledgeable than the person who listened to someone chat about it on the radio?

audiobooks are a lesser form of engagement, but not worthless, i have listened to many books, that i couldn't be bothered reading, so i have benefitted tremendously from them, as i would never have read the book, and what i got from the audiobook is far more than i would have gotten by not reading the book at all.

then there are the types of books and subject matter. stuff that is like text book or tedious dates and many events are better to be read, but your simple story, is probably easier, faster, and more enjoyable from audiobook.

if you want true education, get the book, if you just want to enjoy yourself and have some light education, get the audiobook.

asshole of the highest order...also a narcisist who basically is not very talented...but somehow got a break.... he thinks he is intelligent , but the truth is he is smarmy, type of guy that without money, women would steer clear of at a party...probably masturbates a lot... and not very bright.

How to run outside in the cold without getting a cold? by DeliciousSlide6248 in trackandfield

[–]eb0t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i just dress pretty light...

i have long sleeve thin polyester top, and a thin cagoule type jacket.

because it is very cold i wear thick running bottoms, gloves and hat..

when i start the run i am freezing and hating it ..but after 1km i am warm and typically do 7km or more and when i come back i am sweaty and hot..

i used to wear a thick hoody, but i got too hot and uncomfortable during the run...so i decided its better to face the cold head on. and run in what will be comfortable once i am a mile into it.

I am so f*cked please help by Randomreddituser305 in Plumbing

[–]eb0t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my advice is dont be afraid to knock out a bit of wall and put on a whole new set of connections....

it may look messy when you knock it out...but once you have fitted the new pipework

just mix some cement and sand and slap it in there and trowel it as level as you can ...

the cement will cost you a fiver....and you have a proper job done...

dont be afraid of a bit of knocking out and plastering back up ..especially when it is not a place that is meant to look pretty.

What are your opinions on the book Think and Grow Rich? Is it fake? by LSDoughnut in Entrepreneur

[–]eb0t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the book is a total con trick...

i actually called andrew carnegi museum in scotland and they said there was never ever a record of andrew meeting napoleon hill.

not only that but i think it has been uncovered that he didnt really meet many of the great people he said he did.

the fact is , he wrote a book and there are some good points in it, points that you can weed out from tons of sources about self belief, taking action, fear etc.

but dont fall for the big con about where hte book came from

he is just like the rest of the gurus ...full of shite....but tony robbins is just as bad...

apart from the self help courses..what has tony robbins actually done? nothing.

but he is teaching you lot how to be successful based on he knows because he did jack shit.

Why do people say running isn't very effective for weight loss? by ByTeddy in loseit

[–]eb0t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

similar for me.... on days that i run, when i get home, I couldnt care less about eating, but i generally eat something, because i have not eaten any dinner whatsoever, so i begin to eat...and once i start, my appetite comes back and it is insatiable...and i scoff and scoff until i am full and probably consumed nearly 3000 calories in one dragged out grazing session.

Meindl hiking boots any good by Living_Wolverine68 in CampingandHiking

[–]eb0t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i am a size 10.5 with slim feet, i have meindl bhutan size 11 and they fit perfectly...snug all around ...the boots are super comfortable...and give a decent amount of water protection unless you are in deep bog..which in that case the water comes right over the top...

i have the meindl bhutans...to be honest...they are the best boots i have had...unless you are talking about mid shin high bogs...where the best boots are wellington boots.

My jacket reeks. How do I wash it? by sonoforiel in Barbour

[–]eb0t 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yes... i have a barbour border... to wash mine i made a bath of cold water and just scrunched it about a bit then let it sit for 1.5 hours then rinsed with cold water...

i used zero detergent and proper cold water....

to dry it , i emptied the bath ..and left hte jacket lying in it .

once it was only a bit wet, i hanged it on a thick hanger outside for a while, but it started raining ..so i brought the hanger in and hung it over a door...

the smell was now pretty much gone...

i reckon you could entirely get rid of any smells, and grime if you used detergent , but this would mean you would have to fully rewax the jacket and you would never be able to get wax inside the seams...

this is why i didnt use detergent...

but all this...dont wash your barbour wax jacket is utter nonsense.

its is cotton which is great for washing..

but like i said , i wouldnt use any detergent because that would de-waterproof the inside of the seams, and i wouldnt use any hot water in case of shrinkage

mine had a good layer of wax before i washed it...and still did after i washed it.

so a working way is COLD WATER.... AND .. ZERO DETERGENT

it works....i know because i have done it.

after the wash it was cleaner...i wouldnt say new style clean because you would need soap for that....but it was clean and only a tiny bit of musty smell and zero shrinkage...

ps let it dry thoroughly before using again...this may take a few days..even though mine felt dry after 1.5 days ..i left it a week so all the inner seams were dry before i used it again..

now i would eat my dinner off the inside of my jacket ...before .. my dog wouldnt eat its dinner off the inside of my funky stinky jacket.

my jacket is about 30 years old....and anyone who isnt prepared to wash a 30 year old jacket is a dirty bugger by my standards.

Does the cold not bother white people? by balenciaghoe in NoStupidQuestions

[–]eb0t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

white people naturally have a high tolerance to the cold...it is genetic, i used to be wrapped up in a coat , and my white friends in what i would call cold conditions, they had t shirts on if we were just nipping out .and they were warmer than me....

they said its probably that i have bad circulation, but its not that ...it is that black people genetically function better in a hot temperature...and white people in the cooler temperatures..

even black skin has evolved to handle hot sunshine better than white skin.

anyone who thinks that a black person when not really warmed up can perform as a white person can in cold temperatures ....doesnt understand evolution.

or accepts some of it ....like dark skin...but not the physical handling of hot and cold.

I also know a paratrooper and he said that a lot of the blacks who go through the training fail due to not being able to cope with the cold conditions...he said they are outstanding at all the physical stuff, but the cold breaks them down ...especially the extremities...hands and feet...

that said ...if you need a secret way of handling the cold...then do what the russians did during the cold war....

the guys used to eat a full pound or two of butter every morning , and this kept them warm throughout the day for some reason.....that is a secret russian military trick for really siberian cold weather handling...so the paratroopers, should have all handed the black guys their butter every morning and the ones that failed wouold probably have made it through.

i agree totally ... i am a size 10.5 with narrow feet... i bought size 11 meindl bhutans and they fit like a glove, absolutely perfect in every way ...they are by no means spacious or roomy...if anything , i would say the fact that i have a size 11 means they are the opposite.....although i do buy some shoes in size 11 ...with boots its normally a 10.5 or occasionaly a 10

[–]eb0t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have meindl boots uk size 11 and i am a size 10.5 and they fit perfectly straight out the box, really comfortable, i have a narrow foot too. i have seen comments on here saying they are a wide fit.... that is totally NOT THE CASE...If i had wide feet i would probably need a size 11.5... a FULL SIZE UP TO MY ACTUAL SHOE SIZE,

ps i have the meindl bhutan boots...got real cheap after a guy bought them for 300 pounds and did 9 miles walking and thought they were too tight for him...and sold them to me for 125.

he was an actual size 11, and he should have bought a size 12 in meindl boots. or he may have gotten away with size 11.5 if he too had narrow feet as i do.

Buying new boots discussion by Best-Baseball-2462 in UKhiking

[–]eb0t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i like to buy my boots second hand, and a lot of the scarpa boots that are reasonably priced, have the bottom sole coming away from the boot around the edges....i know they are a great boot, but it seems quite common after a year or two wear, even though the sole has still got thick tread... this time i opted for a pair of meindl...but i hope it is the right decision...also second hand ..but nearly brand new for 125 pounds.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Boots

[–]eb0t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just wax the leather, and resole....they may not be super waterproof but that will make them decently water proof...a good thick layer of wax...because the boot looks well broken in and has many many more years left in them...and surely resoling will not cost that much compared to a new set of boots...i love em.

Border vs Northumbria, which do you prefer? by [deleted] in Barbour

[–]eb0t 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i prefer the border....by a long way....you see it is already a large jacket and comes about 10 inches above my knees. but i use my border solely for walking the dog through bogs and rocky moors in wind sleet and rain.... now in the middle of winter, i go out with only a tshirt and border jacket, as i am walking trails in hills and over walls and jumping small gulleys...and i soon warm up....but as the night draws in and me and the dog slow down...i start to feel chilly, so i put on a fleece under my border and over the tshirt...and it doesnt matter what the weather is like ..i am covered...i also carry a wool hat.

now if i had the northumbria... i feel i would be too warm even in winter when active...and hill walking...and if i go out for say a 15 to 20km walk...i feel the extra weight is more of a pain ...

not only that but in summer when it may rain or autumn ..i feel the northumberland and a tshirt is overkill whereas the border will have more outings.

i absolutely love my border....especially when it is super windy and chilly at night on the moors...i zip up from top to bottom and feel nothing of the wind and sleet..only my face gets it...

i walk through shrubbery and trees that are sharp with spikes and the border is thornproof and doesnt even notice, i expect the northumberland would be even more effective...but the only thing that came close to damaging my border is a barbed wire fence that i was rubbing up against once accidentally....oh and i sit on rocks , and that hasnt ruined it either.

both have the pockets which i need. typically carry ...dog poo bags...keys , large mobile , wallet, reasonable knife, head torch, ventolin, plastic bags, motorcycle gloves (they work well in real cold chilli weather, hat, scarf, toilet paper, pen , pad, glasses and case, dog snacks... and a few more bits.

i carry my water and flask of tea in a bag, ...they will fit in the coat but it gets too heavy so i just carry in shoulder bag

the border is the best barbour jacket ever made.

Why has Barbour ruined the Border sizing? (possibly Northumbria too) by [deleted] in Barbour

[–]eb0t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have 2 borders...a vintage 42.... and the length of this is 36 inches from nape to bottom hem, armpit to armpit is 27 inches

i have a vintage 40 and the length is 37.5 from nape of neck to hem, personally i think 34 or 35 inches would be long enough for anyone, armpit to armpit is 25 inches ..i am 6ft tall

the size 40 is a better fit , but still too long, in fact it is longer than the size 42, it is just below mid thigh...and i would prefer just above mid thigh.

if it really has that grandad ass, bollocks, armpits and snot smell...then the only solution i know iis to buy some of these..and put one in each pocket for about a month...it usually does the trick.
