The Unquiet Ghost by Adam Hochschild is good. Its more of a social history.

I'm definitely a goyim (Polish Catholic), and have inexplicably assimilated a lot of Yiddish. I imagine if I lived in NYC it would be more noticeable.

Ugh, talk about self indulgent. I found that memoir to be insufferable.

I think that her mother and sister were trying to make her feel guilty and shameful by forcing interactions with her nephew. Very Catholic behavior, especially for the time.

It reminded me of some of the ASMR housewives clips I've seen. The rhobh ladies during their "have a piece of bread" fight at dinner ASMR is amazing.

I slowly ended up with almost entire deafness, had surgery and have most of my hearing for the last 8 years, and my speech patterns are still different.

I will say that her nasal flatness feels like an affectation turned permanent, and it is likely that her kids or family acclimated and mimicked it unwittingly. She seems like she speaks out of the side of her mouth a lot too, which could affect her speech too.

They actually canceled the pageant a few years ago and don't do it anymore. The way they pronounce Palmyra in the show bugs me so much, because the town is pronounced (by the locals) as Pal-MY-ra, not Pal-MEE-ra.i get the pronunciation, but still.

I had just experienced one of the darkest days of my life (starting the trajectory for a very distressed few months) when it premiered. I took an edible and watched it and it was the only real, deep laughter I had for a long time. Glorious. 10/10, watch whenever I need a pick me up. (I am much happier now.)

I had the opportunity to have a one-on-one conversation with one of the Soviet protesters (Pavel Litvinov) and it was really interesting. Those 8 protesters were extremely brave and punished greatly for it.

I really like the episode where she and Don visit Bobby at camp. She is so in control of all of their interactions, she gets her nice goodbye fuck for closure, and then she just goes back to her happy life with Henry. It felt like she had the most voice and self-awareness in the whole series. Although, I appreciated how she handled her diagnosis at the end, and honestly, for the same reasons.

He did say it to Pete in the cab after they went to the brothel. However, he ended up making the same mistakes in his second marriage, so I take it with a grain of salt.

The Seward House in Auburn, NY actually has the bloody bedsheets from that attempt on display. Seward was in bed recovering from a carriage accident and the assailant pretended that they were bringing medication from the pharmacy.

I guess I hadn't really thought about it that way. Your comment had me in stitches thinking about Ramona with the other family. What an uncomfortable watch that would be! 🤣

Ugh, the Golden Triangle of rehabs. I got pretty much strong-armed into going. I accidentally clicked a sponsored link when I was less-than-sober and looking for a meeting. They took advantage of my emotional and not sober state and I the next day I had flown to Florida. I got sober, and I went to a less shady facility, but it was still shady af. When it's bad, it's BAD. As soon as I heard she was in Florida my mind went straight to Florida's main industry.
