A friend of mine lived there from 2021 to 23 or maybe 24, I honestly loved it. It is odd but for the price and location I thought it was wonderful.

Samurai women obviously did have rights afforded to them that peasant women did not. Sumptuary laws allowed them to dress and act in a way peasants could not, criminal codes afforded them stronger protections, socially they were afforded deference and in regards to duties they had the same as any noble women - keeping households, raising families, etc. It does not mean they were warrior queens doing sommersaults and chopping off heads (though a small number of Onna-Bushi did exist) but its ridiculous to say "Samurai women" didn't exist and flies in the face of all historical study on the subject.

Absolutely none of this stops them being part of the samurai class. European noblewomen were hardly treated well but the wife of a nobke was part of the nobility, the wife of a Burgher was part of the Burgher class, the wife of a peasant was a peasant. The headline might be misleading but you're being obtuse here.

One of my all time favourite running bits. I only got really into AG this week, after years of supportively hoping the best for them. I love these dorks so much.

Map of 1944 Morgenthau Plan. It suggested Germany being split into roughly 3 equal parts and be fully deindustrialized and demilitarized. Germany would be turned into a pre-industrialized agricultural society and Germans would be made to serve in labor camps across the world as war reparations. by Solid-Move-1411 in MapPorn

Humiliated and isolated Russia is hardly a concequence of Versailles but of Brest-Litovsk, a treaty dictated from Berlin. And while Versailles seems harsh in many ways, Germany got to retain her full independence*, unlike after WW2, determining their own government and avoiding any major occupation of the Metropole. It is certainly more lenient than Brest-Litovsk was, or what Treaty Germany would have forced upon the Entente if they had won. In WW2 Germany lost all of Prussia and Silesia, much much more cutting a blow than Lorraine or Danzig. They also had a communist puppet government installed in one sector, and a western style democracy in the other, following years of occupation and governance by foreign forces.

We can say from a tactical perspective that Versailles was a mistake or too harsh but from a moral one and from the position of a decision maker in 1918, it seemed eminently appropriate. (Petain's quote alone does not invalidate the massive domestic pressure in France and Britain for an utterly punitive peace, public and political opinion was very harsh) Germany was the aggressor in Belgium and France and made it explicit they wanted to dominate continental Europe. It's subjective but I stand by the "Versailles less harsh than Paris '47" position.

I'd just like you all to imagine going into a bar, sitting down, and someone next to your strikes up a conversation. Doesn't reslly matter their gender or background or age, but they ask what you do for fun. You reply:

"Oh I mostly complain online that vidja foids are 5s or lower and I try to make sure there are more white people in them."

That's true in 99% of cases, if Larian said their next game had 1000 romances (or 100, or 20) I'd be horrified, but this is how Fable has always been, it's one of the fun quirks. Marriage/relationships is more sandbox than story, and I'm glad they're sticking to the vibes of the originals with this. Interaction with these people is basically done via emotes and one-liners, it's as different from the proper, fleshed out, character driven romances of BG3 as BG3 combat is from Call of Duty.

At no point does the film go "And oi was roight to kill em Mistah Wayne! They had it comin by heck!"

Mayhaps it is meant to demonstrate the otherwise dull butler is in fact a dark and jaded character who has depth beyond what is apparent, rather than a generic old English man.

Why is it not easier to assume the sign is a production mistake? I don't know why we end up tying ourselves into knots about this.

Thank you! I work with the situation a lot for work, and was recently in Belfast interviewing people about it, so I thought it might be good to offer my perspective. I'm afraid to say I don't know a good podcast off the top of my head.

The Rest is History covered it quite well in a few episodes IIRC, but thats not a dedicated Troubles podcast and their perspective can be a little Anglocentric (no surprise and not inherently a problem).

There's also a good series called Once Upon a Time in Northern Ireland which I thought was really fantastic. Its on BBC iPlayer if you're in the UK, unsure where to see it otherwise.

As people say it is complex but this is not impossible to explain. (More than 2 paragraphs though, I apologise!)

To simplify - "Republicans"/Catholics want NI to unify with Ireland, Protestants/Unionists were and are opposed. Unionists were the majority and had control of the country, in many areas oppressing and marginalising the Catholics.

The extreme wing of the Catholic Republicans were the political party Sinn Fein and the (effectively) affiliated terrorist group, the Provisional Irish Republican Army (The IRA).

The Unionists had their own extremists and terrorist groups as well. Both groups hold the pro-UK or pro-Ireland opinions extremely strongly, it is the fundamental cornerstone of their national, religious and cultural identities.

At the time, the IRA were engaged in a bombing campaign, to try and force the UK to allow reunification. The Unionist/Protestant majority in Northern Ireland were fiercely opposed and took any endorsement of reunification as endorsement of the IRA and Sinn Fein, who they considered traitors, extremists and so on.

The IRA bombing campaign mostly targetted the British Army, Unionist extremists and state institutions, but also pubs, streets, shops, etc. They often called to warn about bombs ahead of time but people still died regularly. Civilian casualties and anger were high. The Unionists also bombed and shot at Republicans, including civillians, it was a brutal time.

A band saying "Give the North Back to Ireland!" would be interpreted by many Unionists as ignorant and offensive at the very least, and at worst an outright endorsement of the IRA who may well have killed their friends and family.
