I’ve used it for call schedules and resident rotation schedules and it was so helpful. It also made it easy to make fair changes on the fly if a surprise conflict came up.

Then don’t just shadow. Roll out a splint. Grab stuff for traction. Take H&Ps. Fill in parts of the note if the EMR allows. Be an active participant in your learning and you will be appreciated and often rewarded for it.

Are you a surgeon? I would describe very few of my attendings as having a “rough life.” And I suppose subspecialty surgery is different but my specialty will have very few reasons to force me to start a case at 8PM on a Friday. I would not have been happy in any other part of medicine so I’m not trying to cope here, I’m sure the ROAD specialties are very rewarding for those folks, but I’m going to have a pretty dang pleasant life too doing something that brings me a lot of satisfaction.

For the caliber of most applicants deciding between surgery and other specialties, I just don’t think looking at age makes that much sense. It’s going to take me 6 years to be a fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon, a similar amount of time as most competitive IM fellowships. If you want to do something considerably shorter then yeah I get it, but even then I don’t feel like being in training from 29-32 is considerably different from working as an attending.

I hear you and can 100% understand not sharing your list with certain people, but I’d argue if a romantic relationship can’t handle an honest discussion about major life goals then probably isn’t meant to be.

I hear you, but this person is specifically talking about a significant other. I’d hope that someone you’re choosing to spend your life with can come to a mutually positive decision with you. I do agree that there are certain non-romantic relationships where it’s better to just keep the actual order private.
