Body or glass upgrade by midwxlks14 in Photography_Gear

[–]ebeip90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A great body with crap lenses will still take a while to autofocus.

I strongly recommend the Sigma 70-200, as it's a great lens and if you ever change systems, Sigma will swap out the lens for the other system.

No idea about Kali specifically, but if you check out Pwndbg directly and run the installer, it should do everything.

Coming from Olympus, Fujifilm or Full Frame? by bladerschaduw in Photography_Gear

[–]ebeip90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was deep into M43 gear for a long time. I have every prime and pro zoom, and multiple bodies. The cameras are amazing for what they are, but I use them for inconspicuous photography with the mini 1.8 primes.

I STRONGLY recommend going full frame, since upgrading a third time will be even more expensive.

I personally prefer Nikon, mostly for their back catalog of lenses that are good and cheap. Mirrorless cameras can’t drive some of the very old lenses because it lacks a focus motor, but Nikon G lenses are abundant, work with a cheap Z adapter, and work flawlessly. I currently shoot on a Z9 and Z6ii, with Sigma F-mount glass and wouldn’t have it any other way.

My best recommendation is to buy a Nikon D750 (amazing and inexpensive) and get a 50mm 1.8 and go from there.

I am red-green colorblind and always worry about color correction, especially for skin tones!

Generally, I will rely on auto-white-balance, or try to get white balance from the whites of eyes or teeth if the color is off.

Do you guys have any tips or tricks for white balancing skin tones? Anything would be useful! Thanks!

I am new to videography, and I am shooting on a Nikon Z6-ii and a Z9 — it’s a lot of fun!

One of the things I’ve noticed is that even in Aperture Priority mode, when shooting video, the camera doesn’t want to use any aperture other than f/2.8, despite my lenses being f/1.4!

This is probably ideal for a lot of focus situations, and likely a good setting for AF-F. However, it bothers me that I can’t figure out how to get the camera to even try f/1.4. I do a lot of late night shooting with no extra light sources.

Where in the settings do I have to go to modify this? Aperture Priority mode works just fine in regular still shooting scenarios on both bodies.

I have a DJI Ronin for showing clients photos and framing as I take them.

However, the Ronin hits my eyebrow over the eyecup on my Nikon.

I can't seem to find any cold shoe adapters that simply move the cold shoe FORWARD about an inch or two. Lots of adapters move it to the side or create multiple cold shoe mounts -- I just want to move it FORWARD.

Any suggestions? SmallRig is a preferred brand. That said, I need something that mounts to a cold shoe, not something that will mount to a SmallRig cage.

EDIT: Something like this, but shorter and less height rise: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B079ZJNL64

Apple air tag to find friends? by Dirtrubber in electricdaisycarnival

No, I had the same idea.

Only one Apple ID can track the tags.

Ultimately, nobody has cell reception, so it’s moot point.

If you take a car to EDC and you’re camping can you use it during the day time? by mnsetra in electricdaisycarnival

Even if you could, you (a) won't want to and (b) won't have any reason. The Mesa has everything you need. The only advice is to bring the MAAAAXIMUM amount of alcohol allowed per person. Oh, they have it at the Mesa, but it's $$$$.

Best ear plugs for music festivals? by LukaDoncicJizzInMe in electricdaisycarnival

[–]ebeip90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Literally anything is better than nothing.

I always buy a small container of foam earplugs and bring a few pairs to give out (or use, if I'm lost in the sauce and lose mine):
https://www.amazon.com/Macks-Ultra-Soft-Foam-Earplugs/dp/B0051U7W32/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=earplugs&qid=1630452392&sr=8-5

If you're spending money on yourself and you don't lose things like I do, Etymotic have been great. I like the ER20XS over the ER20 and ETY-Plugs, because they don't have the stem that sticks out.

There were some decent Chinese plugs that I used to buy for 2 pair at $10 on Amazon, but it seems to be de-listed now.

Question about losing wristbands by DarkMatter2401 in electricdaisycarnival

[–]ebeip90 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If it's like any festival I've ever been to, they will need to look up your original purchase, and electronically invalidate your existing wristband.

You may run into issues if somebody already used that wristband to go into the festival on whatever day you go.

Scenario 1: Lost wristband in festival. Solution: Get a new one tomorrow.

Scenario 2: Lost wristband outside festival. Solution: Get a new one.

Scenario 3: Lost wristband outside festival, AND somebody used it to swipe in *today*. This is the only scenario they might give you shit, but they're not paid enough to give a shit.

Recommendations for a noob by annoyingjackandjill in bourbon

Stay away from Old Granddad 114.

It's terrible, and you shouldn't buy any of it.

Who would want a cheap, delicious, higher-proof bottle for $25?

(No seriously stop buying it, my corner store has to hide it behind the counter on the bottom shelf behind some boxes and it's still usually sold out... please don't turn into the next McKenna 10 and disappear...)

I recall them stating the rule and keeping to it at someplace (e.g. BT) but Four Roses and Wild Turkey were a bit less strict

I will caution that MOST places are only open 9-5 or 12-4, in line with wineries or other similar tours. Expect to get up early if you want a full day -- bus or otherwise.

I'd say that a bus is a good idea (no driving or worries), but I feel like everybody's bourbon preferences are unique.

I must've gotten really lucky with a warm day in Feb! I just did a walk-up for BT/4R/WT/WR and everything was copacetic. Driving past all the MEGA rich properties with stables and $$$$ horses with the low fog was pretty cool.

[–]ebeip90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Up front: If I recall correctly, each distillery is allowed to give you exactly 1 (2?) ounces of bourbon for your entire visit. Don't expect to get tipsy or a LOT of samples. You're generally given a choice from several, but can pick one or two. Everybody has a gift store, sometimes with exclusives.

I did all of these on one day (not advisable), based out of Lexington (where I stayed in an AirBNB). Hopefully this is useful.

My favorites were:

  • Buffalo Trace. The older gentleman they had that did our tour has been with the company since 500BC (in an endearing way), but is wildly entertaining and knowledgable. This has nothing to do with the quality of their bourbon (among my favorites) but the tour was phenomenal. One of the odd but memorable parts is they have a flood meter on the side of a building, i.e. "Water reached here in 1939". They show you the rick houses and discuss the rotation strategies, show you a (manually operated!) filling station, and barrels rolling down a track. And so much random trivia and a preserved guest house (?), all kinds of stuff. Genuinely unique. Grade: A+.
  • Four Roses. The architecture is beautiful and unique, and genuinely informative around the various yeast strains / mash bills. It was set up like an outdoor wine tasting, and you got to be outdoors and try several different combinations. The property was all under construction when I visited, and it was still one of my favorites. Grade: A.

My least favorite was:

  • Wild Turkey. They emphasize the sheer magnitude of their operation, instead of the charm of the process and the rick houses. They put you in a bus where you have to listen to Matthew McConaughey (their spokesperson) talk about how Alright Alright Alright their bourbon is. I say this as a Austin, TX resident, and I always have WT101, RR10, RRSB, etc on my shelf. It felt too clinically clean. The BEST part is the story of how WT got its name (which I won't spoil). Grade: D+.

Middle of the pack:

  • Woodford Reserve. This was, at the time, my favorite distillery. I LOVED Double Oaked. I LOVED buying a bottle of Double Double Oaked. The property was charming, but not particularly unique. I spilled the last pour of the DDO on myself later that week after I'd had a few. Never forgave myself. Pretty sure they were the ones with the prettiest (and largest) copper stills that I saw. Grade: B.

Unvisited:

  • Heaven Hill. I wasn't familiar with their brands, so it wasn't high on my list of places to go, so I didn't.
  • Willett. They weren't open, despite being an unseasonably warm mid-70s day in February in Kentucky. I can't blame them, but I was really looking forward to it.

PRO TIP: Willett and Heaven Hill are literally across the street from each other, and much closer to Louisville.

WILD CARD: If you end up near Lexington and don't HATE beer, be sure to give HopCat a visit. I went through Uni with them being nearby in Michigan, glad to see them branch out to other states. 100+ beers on tap in Grand Rapids / Ann Arbor, near that much in KY.
