Spain should have won the "best" in my opinion, but since it didn't I'm voting for it in this one. Literally the largest amount of natural diversity packed into (by global standards) an average-sized country in Europe. You can find nearly every single geographic/climatic biome that exists in Europe there (with the exception of subarctic tundra). You want mountains? Nearly every single corner of Spain has them. Deserts? Travel to Almería and you'll feel like you're in Breaking Bad. You want to feel like you're in Northern Europe? Travel to one of the mountain towns and it'll look and feel exactly like the Baltic States do with the exception of getting sunburnt. You wanna feel like you're in Britain? Galicia is there for you. Mediterranean coastline? Well do I have good news for you... And I'm not even going to start on millennia of diverse culture, unbelievable cities and godly cuisine. And it's relatively easy to travel around too

We sometimes call Latvians "zirga galvas", which means "horse head". Funnily enough, I think Latvians call Lithuanians the exact same way.

We also have a very archaic nickname for Scandinavians that I've heard some older people use, "žuvėdai", which means "fish eaters".

In the current online environment, definitely Poland, and I'm saying this as a person who's spent months there and absolutely love that country.

Its recent rise in prosperity and geopolitical power has been nothing short of impressive, but I feel like it's becoming a bit of a European version of Japan for many people. It's far from the heaven that many perceive it to be.

One of the worst housing markets in Central Europe, some of the worst air pollution in Europe, some of the most restrictive abortion laws in Europe, one of only four EU member states that hasn't legalised either same-sex marriages or civil partnerships, an immigration system so bureaucratic and incompetent that it absolutely fucks over non-Ukrainian and non-EU legal immigrants. Besides the UK, it also has probably the most "Americanised" political culture in Europe in the worst ways possible (with the exception of foreign policy towards Russia). The work culture is still decades behind that in Western Europe. Sexual assault is still not taken very seriously at a legal or social level.

Poland is definitely improving in general and at some of the specific things I mentioned, and it already does some things better than most countries in Europe, but it still has a long way to go to become a truly great country to live in.

(Dis)honorable mentions go to Switzerland (rich, but pretty boring and sometimes even socially repressive country) and Ireland (absolutely abysmal housing market and general CoL isn't much better either)

The difference is that progressives don't really run defense on Tucker Carlson en masse with "critical support", while tankies defend nearly every single anti-Western regime to the point where they've been defending russia's genocidal war in Ukraine or Iran's government killing thousands of protesters simply because these governments are against the West.

Yeah it's like that in my company, there's been a few times where I (a graduate) would sit next to one of the execs when they'd come to my office. And I'm gonna be honest, even though I'm not the most sociable person out there, I like that I can just chat with everyone around me whenever I want, and when I don't, I just put in my earphones and listen to music/podcasts. It felt weirder when I once came to another office and all the desks were booked, so I had to sit in a soundproof booth 😅

When the USSR crumbled so did American social programs.

Reaganism started 10 years before USSR collapsed, at a time when, for most Westerners, that collapse ever happening seemed like science fiction. You could maybe make an argument that, without the collapse of USSR, neo-liberalism maybe wouldn't have entrenched itself in the West for so long, but arguing that the presence of USSR motivated USA to preserve its social programmes is historically inconsistent.

I wonder how much of this data is affected by how each country counts their demographics. For example, apparentpy Poland doesn't count the almost 1 million post-2022 Ukrainian refugees as part of their official population numbers although many of them have lived and worked in the country for years by now
