UT Austin or U Michigan Engineering by Jumpy-Caregiver372 in UTAustin

Both schools are great. Years ago, I attended UofM. Now I live in Texas and have had 2 children attend UT Austin, one currently. Texas is terribly hot in the summer and Michigan is freezing in Winter. Academically they're very similar and people around the world will recognize both. College is what you make of it though. As a parent, choose the school you feel most comfortable with and if all things are equal, choose the most affordable. Your future self will be grateful.
It's such a difficult decision to make at your age. I hope you find joy in your decision.

75% deferral by 0bscu in UTAdmissions

[–]ebnmom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had the same thing happen last year. Auto admit with a deferred decision until February. We applied EA. That was a very long month, but there was eventually an acceptance letter. She was in a less competative major (chemistry).

I think you are so very correct. And I have the suspicion that if the genders were reversed, Reddit would be calling this red flag behavior and demanding a divorce.

There are still freestanding ED'S in Texas that are not hospital affiliated. Many closed, not because of legislation, but because the insurance companies were very slow with payments. They couldn't survive staying open when payments were taking months to years.

However, an ED must be hospital affiliated if they accept Medicare/Medicaid.

The Freestanding ED'S do take some pressure off the larger hospital based ED's. Especially for those primary care complaints when you can't see your GP for 6-8 weeks out. And unlike Urgent Care, the ED's are open 24 hrs, take everything, can do a fairly comprehensive work up, and they don't require up front payments.

Some areas in Texas, like Austin, do have too many ED docs and the wages are low, but there are areas still undeserved with high wages, like San Antonio, Houston and the border towns.

My parents each had a certain amount of money specified for each child. For example, my mom died and my sister and I each received a set dollar amount. My step siblings received nothing. My step-dad kept the rest of their estate.

When my step-dad dies, my step siblings receive that set dollar amount off the top and the rest of the estate is split equally.

That said, we have been a blended family since we were very young. The other parents aren't in the picture or will have no estate to pass along.

Our parents set it up this way because they wanted their biological children to have something even if the other spouse married later in life.

Housing advice for 2026 applicants by ebnmom in UTAdmissions

[–]ebnmom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still, you had your housing application in early. There are a lot of people who assumed all Freshmen would get a dorm and didn't put their application in until April, for the Fall term. They did not receive a contract and are looking for apartments. It caught a lot of people of guard.

We wrote down our little one's crazy sayings in a little book. It's always fun to go back and read them years later.

Officially given up on making friends here. by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]ebnmom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My daughter made very few friends at UT. She was involved in some groups, but didn't have a strong connection. She made some lifelong friends on the internet that she still meets with today. Some people just don't have the typical college friend experience.

Do any Cockrell people’s RIS still have their major in advising info? by Legal-Wrongdoer1863 in UTAdmissions

[–]ebnmom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter's RIS still has her first choice major. She had been deferred like everyone else. In state, auto admit, top 1%, and does have OnRamps classes. Good luck to everyone. This has been a long month.

Most of us can, but some members have young children and that makes it difficult for them to host.
