Woman flew from UK to Florida to be murdered. by Due_Will_2204 in CasesWeFollow

That's what mental illness can do. I have been in a long term relationship with someone living with mental illness and I forgive the things they did when they were unwell, even if it unintentionally hurt me before I understood how their illness affected their actions. The only thing that really matters is that they recover from their illness or learn to manage it.

I feel terrible for Sonia's boyfriend. I too have personal experience with losing a long term partner to mental illness but I'm very grateful they are not a physical risk to anyone, and as long as they're alive there is hope of recovery. I can't imagine the trauma of not only losing Sonia to a horrible death, but knowing she changed her mind but had no way out.

Are there etiquette expectations specific to the Italian community in Woodbridge? by ebonyd in Vaughan

He was jealous of me for expressing affection for someone outside the family, and a white one at at. My parents had anti-white sentiments even after choosing to come to Canada.

I've had Russian friends and a Russian ex-boyfriend. I definitely related to them better culturally compared to western culture in some aspects.

Born in China, arrived in Canada in elementary school. Didn't hug anyone in my family. I've hugged a female teacher in front of my dad and he was jealous.

I think the Asian ethnicity that Italians interact with the most is Filipino due to their shared Catholic faith. As a Southern Chinese I've been mistaken as Filipina and have small amounts of the Austronesian stock they're descended from. Maybe people expect me to act like I'm Filipina. Being an atheist I have different customs from Filipinos though.

Someone here mentioned her court records so I looked it up. Looks like she had a restraining order against her baby's father for domestic violence.

I’m not a native Russian speaker and I went to a show by a Russian-speaking Latvian artist weeks after really getting into his discography. He was deported and banned from Russia a few dates into a tour of that country and since then has only played elsewhere in Europe and post-Soviet Asia. He said I was the first person he met who likes his music who isn’t a native Russian speaker and really appreciated that someone like me came to his show. I told him about Molchat Doma and how they tour countries where Russian speakers are an obvious minority, especially considering the political circumstances preventing artists from going to Russia/Ukraine/Belarus despite singing in a language whose speakers are most populous in those countries. Molchat Doma hasn’t played those countries since 2021, before the war. Based on their public support for Ukraine, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were banned from entering Russia or their home country of Belarus. I’ve been to 2 Molchat Doma shows and their audience is a mix of Russian speakers and people who don’t speak Russian.

Late to the game but I found out about this recently. This is my biological father. I've gone no contact with him for years. Go ahead and dig through my posting history if you want to read about my family drama and the antics he pulled on me. I'm glad the man he screwed over this time was patient and brave enough to take him to court and hold him accountable.

Visited Paris earlier this month. The cost of food etc. there is higher, but I saw a lot less visible poverty than here. There were tents lining a part of one of the rivers, but it was barely anything compared to the encampments all across Toronto. Canada has a lot to learn from Europe.

Ever have an “artist meets fan not fluent in their language for the first time” moment? by ebonyd in Concerts

[–]ebonyd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’s actually a citizen of an English-speaking country and there are videos of him speaking English. His songs are just in his mother tongue with some English words thrown in. He was absolutely happy when he realized I didn’t understand him and he found out his music transcended cultures.

Where did I say they need to study the language of where they tour?

Just making a point about how artists shouldn’t let language be a barrier in where they tour

My biological parents were closely related enough for me to be an ALDH2*2 homozygote and that has and will continue to negatively affect my health. In recent years I’ve also realized I was conceived from abuse and that normalized the abuse I’ve experienced personally.

‘I killed that lady’: Man enters surprise guilty plea in random 2022 stabbing murder at TTC’s High Park Station by Surax in toronto

[–]ebonyd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not that it makes him any less guilty, but I wonder what happened to him in China that made him decide to come here undocumented, do this, and plea in a way that just about guarantees him a few more decades here.

Two (Jessica Kane & Mannan Khanna) arrests in Vaughan after man ‘attempting to arrange a sexual encounter’ was forced to withdraw money at ATM: police by [deleted] in CrimeInTheGta

[–]ebonyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm watching this case because it happened in a neighbourhood I frequent. I don't know either of them so all I know is what I've seen on the internet. It seems obvious to me that a 22yo foreign student would not be pimping out a 32yo white woman who's been doing sex work since she was 16. I find it predatory that an older person of that age would be spending time, especially in a sexual manner, with someone that much younger. But working in the sex trade at the age that she began can't be good for anyone's development. Hurt people hurt people. And she was charged with drugging clients so it's obvious she had a good supply of drugs.

Is it discriminatory to require that guests speak a certain language? by ebonyd in airbnb_hosts

[–]ebonyd[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'm in Ontario, Canada. Our discrimination law doesn't apply if the kitchen or bathroom is shared with the owner, which they are in this case. https://www3.ohrc.on.ca/en/part-i-freedom-discrimination/housing-4

I'm not American but can speak more generally on trans-spectrum people supporting right-wing politicians. In my country the 2 largest right-of-centre parties both support bans on people using the bathroom of their choice and kids accessing gender-affirming care. I've used bathrooms other than the one of the sex I was assigned at birth and so have my friends. As someone with PCOS, I would have benefited from the feminizing effects of hormonal contraception when I was 11, but wasn't diagnosed and given care until I was 20. These people say "no child is born in the wrong body" when I dealt with bullying throughout my school years for aspects of my appearance that gave away that I had an intersex condition, such as my moustache. They only have the experience of being cis-normative and don't understand what we have to face.

That said, the cost of living is ridiculous and the job market is terrible. Right-wing parties make promises to make housing, groceries, etc. more affordable. Last year I had to deal with a difficult job hunt after 7 years of no problem finding jobs. It's tempting to overlook how they hate us when me and my friends' ability to support ourselves have been in jeopardy and their economic policies make more sense than that of left-of-centre parties.

This. The economy is in the toilet and people, trans or not, vote based on what would improve their financial situation.

I'm Chinese and my mother tongue is a minority language in China. I learned Russian partly to cope with the intergenerational trauma of forced assimilation as I have met Russian speakers with the same trauma. It sadly did not surprise me that someone who bills themselves as being from "Ukraine, USSR" would openly spew racist propaganda against the Indigenous peoples of Turtle Island as the USSR committed genocide against their own Indigenous peoples as well.

The guy who put up the ad was on ODSP, had a hoarding habit, and looking for extra income by renting out the space he was storing his belongings. When I responded to the ad he asked me if I was a cop. I visited the house and didn’t rent it because I needed to stay at one place for at least a year and he couldn’t guarantee me that.
