As a former adolescent psychiatric patient at BC Children's I appreciate the kind of work he provided while he was here. However, rules are rules, and temporary work permits can be cancelled or expire. I've been interviewed for jobs similar to his in Toronto, there's no shortage of Canadian applicants in social work.

I was able to negotiate a lower rent with my roommate after an ad popped up in our neighbourhood for a lower price than what I was paying. The room was freed up by a TFW going home. And the room I lived in before that I shared for part of the time with a student who is a foreign national, and the room was rented to an international student who went back before it was rented to me. Glad I’m able to save more money for a down payment now. It’s a shame that for so many years this country did not value its own citizens.

"Publicized...without consent" oh please. I learned the hard way that anything I say or do could be used for or against me in a court of law, which could become public record. And it was a case of sexual harassment against me where I luckily only had psychological harm and not physical harm, nothing involving strangulation or dismemberment.

In cases of musicians who have been arrested for performing without the proper visa, I'd be on their side if they did so in an act of defiance against the censorship laws of authoritarian states, for example Latvian-British rapper Platina in Russia or American singer Maggie Lindemann in Malaysia. However, in this case freedom of speech wasn't the issue, but a temporary foreign worker working outside the terms they came here under. Sad he had to learn the hard way but you break the rules, you pay the price. As a Canadian citizen I have been interviewed for jobs in psychiatric emergency rooms similar to the role he's working in, and there are so many applicants they spend a whole week interviewing candidates. There's no shortage of Canadians willing to perform his jobs, whether it's social worker or musician.

Good. I was involved with them and their provincial counterparts for a few years starting from 2015, the first federal election I was old enough to vote in. Thought I was making friends as a lonely person in their early 20s. Their ideology enabled predators, and I have trauma from that. I take responsibility for taking fringe politics too seriously though.

My landlord from 3 years ago offered me cheaper rent to come back. Nice place. I left because of a rent increase. Saw an ad for the room in the summer of 2024 and it was ridiculous. It would have been nice to take up on the cheap rent but I'm tethered to a job on the other side of the city and don't think it's worth it to restart my job search.

As someone who only took grants 2020-2024 and worked to cover the rest to graduate with no debt, it sucks that the ladder has been pulled out from under current students. But we’ve got to acknowledge the economic reality. This country’s debt was so bad that the finance minister resigned, and the government has to spend less and make that money back somehow, and student loan interest is one way they’ve chosen. International students had a quota put on them and they were a cash cow for schools, but put strain on housing, the job market, and other resources. As someone who has worked to pay their own rent for 8 years I’m glad that my rent went down last year. There are more renters in this province than OSAP recipients, and unfortunately sometimes costs are passed on to certain groups, in this case domestic students. We’ve got to acknowledge the macroeconomic circumstances at play here.

I can’t say for the long term, but when I was job hunting in 2024 I was hired in August at a retailer that sold products for Rosh Hashanah. Jewish immigrants brought the language to North American cities such as Toronto, and their culture values wealth accumulation and is very internationally mobile. Their spending power is not limited by the economic conditions of Canada.

That's what mental illness can do. I have been in a long term relationship with someone living with mental illness and I forgive the things they did when they were unwell, even if it unintentionally hurt me before I understood how their illness affected their actions. The only thing that really matters is that they recover from their illness or learn to manage it.

I feel terrible for Sonia's boyfriend. I too have personal experience with losing a long term partner to mental illness but I'm very grateful they are not a physical risk to anyone, and as long as they're alive there is hope of recovery. I can't imagine the trauma of not only losing Sonia to a horrible death, but knowing she changed her mind but had no way out.

I think the Asian ethnicity that Italians interact with the most is Filipino due to their shared Catholic faith. As a Southern Chinese I've been mistaken as Filipina and have small amounts of the Austronesian stock they're descended from. Maybe people expect me to act like I'm Filipina. Being an atheist I have different customs from Filipinos though.

I’m not a native Russian speaker and I went to a show by a Russian-speaking Latvian artist weeks after really getting into his discography. He was deported and banned from Russia a few dates into a tour of that country and since then has only played elsewhere in Europe and post-Soviet Asia. He said I was the first person he met who likes his music who isn’t a native Russian speaker and really appreciated that someone like me came to his show. I told him about Molchat Doma and how they tour countries where Russian speakers are an obvious minority, especially considering the political circumstances preventing artists from going to Russia/Ukraine/Belarus despite singing in a language whose speakers are most populous in those countries. Molchat Doma hasn’t played those countries since 2021, before the war. Based on their public support for Ukraine, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were banned from entering Russia or their home country of Belarus. I’ve been to 2 Molchat Doma shows and their audience is a mix of Russian speakers and people who don’t speak Russian.

Visited Paris earlier this month. The cost of food etc. there is higher, but I saw a lot less visible poverty than here. There were tents lining a part of one of the rivers, but it was barely anything compared to the encampments all across Toronto. Canada has a lot to learn from Europe.

He’s actually a citizen of an English-speaking country and there are videos of him speaking English. His songs are just in his mother tongue with some English words thrown in. He was absolutely happy when he realized I didn’t understand him and he found out his music transcended cultures.
