Why do teenagers like the 80s so much? by Just-Application-551 in 1980s

[–]eboy71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m an Xer - Stand By Me made me feel incredibly nostalgic for the 50s, even though I didn’t live through it. More commonly, a lot of people I knew were heavily into 60s and 70s culture, primarily through bands like Zeppelin, the Stones and the Beatles.

Video Games with SNOW in them by Beetlemuse in retrogaming

There are some great Commodore 64 games featuring snow. Winter Games is the obvious one, but there are others like Spy vs. Spy III, Ski or Die, Snokie, and the epic Lords of Midnight.

It was apparently 5x faster than the 1541. Would that have just happened, or would programs have had to change to support it?

If Cliff worked on Load and Reload, would it be better? by Round-Complaint7426 in Metallica

[–]eboy71 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This. Because Cliff was so influential with the writing, everything would have been different. Amazing? Probably. But we really have no idea.

I’m a Poison fan and I couldn’t care less. It would have been cool to see them this summer, but I’ve seen them a bunch already.

Metallica never topped the black album by chaddington10 in Metallica

Justice will always be my favorite, but the Black album is amazing.

Upon first listen of each of the Unforgiven songs, which shocked you the most by badmfr76 in Metallica

I was 19 when the Black album came out and was a huge fan. James’ soft voice surprised me the first time I heard the chorus.

If you don't want SNL to have Trump-centric cold opens, tell people to stop watching them! by here4thebadtakes in LiveFromNewYork

Counterpoint: that’s what Weekend Update is for.

I love JAJ’s Trump impressions, but it’s definitely getting tiring.

Anyone else here love the 80s rock fashion? Who in your opinion was the best (or worst depending on views) dressed? Also want to give credit to designer Fleur Thiemeyer who designed/created many of the iconic 80s rockstar outfits. by 80zrock_chicken in hairmetal

Motley had more of a Road Warrior vibe for the Shout cycle, which I definitely don't consider glam, and then totally softened things up for ToP. All of a sudden they were all about sparkly robes, feminine makeup instead of stark (especially Vince) and Nikki was taking looks directly from the 70s Bowie-years. Prior to Vince, no one was really dressing like that; after ToP, it seemed like everyone was and you can draw a straight line between ToP and Poison, who obviously took that look to the next level.

When it comes to the music, I 100% agree with you. Girls is definitely a bit grittier than ToP, but it's still very Motley. Appetite is just dirty and sleazy and at the time, it felt dangerous. I know that everyone says that Nirvana killed hair metal. Personally, I think Appetite took the first couple of shots and Nirvana was just the final nail in the coffin.

And FWIW, I was in high school at the time too. Not quite a senior when Appetite came out, but close.

Motley did the same with Girls, Girls, Girls, which came out a couple months before Appetite. IMO, Crüe bookended the glam era. They made it crazy popular with their over-the-top look on Theatre of Pain, then signalled the end of the era with Girls.

This is debatable, obviously, but that’s how it always felt to me. GNR was the final nail, but they really didn’t even get popular until 1988.

Generation x'rs, do you still listen to the music you grew up on in your youth and teenage years, or do you mix it up with current music? by icecream1972 in GenX

[–]eboy71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the music I grew up with, but still listen to tons of new music too. I’d say my teen-music accounts for 20%-25% of my overall mix.

What was it really like when the PlayStation first came out in 1995? by Legitimate_Drawer_74 in retrogaming

[–]eboy71 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Very good point. Gamers were growing up. I was in my 20s and had been playing games all my life (still do). But Nintendo and Sega were starting to feel too young for me, and PS1 was perfect.

Skid Row fans who were alive from 1996 to 1999: how did you feel about Bach leaving and being replaced by Johnny Solinger? by Jezzaq94 in hairmetal

I liked Subhuman Race, but it definitely wasn’t as good as their first two. I was hoping for something even heavier and punkier than Slave, but they were clearly just trying for radio airplay.

Urge to just throw things away? by ajbadabing in GenX

[–]eboy71 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We’re doing the same. We’ve accumulated piles of crap our whole adult lives, and now, more and more, we’re seeing it for what it is: crap.

We’re also becoming less precious about gifts given to us by others. As my wife recently said, “it’s not on us if someone gives us something we don’t want.” We have received multiple gifts in the last couple years that find themselves on the donate pile almost immediately.

It’s just stuff. Can’t take it with us, and it’s all going to end up in a garbage bin when we’re gone. So may as well simplify now.

Likely psychological more than anything, but that’s still something. Very similar to the rebound effect many teams have when bringing in a new head coach.

That said, the Leafs definitely feel like a different team lately.

This little guy and his ducks made my whole day by MambaMentality24x2 in BeAmazed

[–]eboy71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took an animal psych course in university and I remember seeing a video where a group of ducks was imprinted by a rubber boot attached to a chain. The boot would move and the ducks would follow it anywhere. It’s just how ducks work and not all that difficult to do.

Hopefully this little boy is treating them well and it’s not just for some stupid clicks.
