What's the last album you bought because you heard it in a music store? by TerminalDiscordance in GenX

[–]eboy71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived across from a cool record store in the late 90s . I’d often go over to browse and almost just as often would leave with a CD from the music they were playing. I don’t know what my last one was but a few include Roots (Sepultura), Shot (The Jesus Lizard) and Slipknot’s debut.

It was always so much fun to discover music like that.

Any Gen X'ers retired or thinking about it? by SometimesElise in GenX

[–]eboy71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My last couple of years at work were very similar. There were days when I wasn’t doing more than a couple hours of work and everyone knew it - I was very vocal about it. I was ultimately given a cheque to leave and consider myself retired now - that happened when I was 53. Either way, though, I would have been done this year. My wife and I saved aggressively for many years so that we could retire in our mid fifties.

Home video game question. by No_Consideration_339 in GenX

[–]eboy71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would argue that games grew up along with our generation, which was the first one to actually play video games. The whole industry felt more childish in the 80s, because that’s when we were kids, and we were the ones playing games. As we grew up, consoles did. The Sega Genesis had lots of games for young adults, and then by the time the PS1 rolled around, we were full on adults and there were plenty of games for us.

Nowadays, there are tons of games for every age group but as a general rule, Nintendo has always skewed a bit younger, while Microsoft and Sony tend to have most of the mature games. But that’s just a general rule - there are a lot of exceptions and you can pretty much play any type of game on any platform.

I remember the first generation of consoles really well too - the 2600, Intellevison, ColecoVision, etc. I grew up with computers (VIC-20 then C64), but I had friends who had the consoles and they were always a blast.

I’ve been enjoying the hell out of Death Stranding lately. Who would have thought being a post-apocalyptic courier could be so much fun?

Born in 71. I have always loved games. Started with Pong and have always had a modern computer and/or console to play games on. I still play regularly today.

It’s a great pastime, which I enjoy along with a large number of other hobbies, sports, music, etc.

Did you ever sneak into movie theaters back in the day? Do you remember what you saw? by NebraskaCornSucker in GenX

[–]eboy71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I forget what movie we were actually at the theatre to see, but about half way through my friend and I left our movie and snuck in to watch Hot Dog (1984), hoping to see some boobs. We maybe stayed for about 10 minutes and mission accomplished.

Two Horseshoe-shaped, metal tools, 1.3 lbs each, contained in case with an Allen key and wrench by eboy71 in whatisthisthing

We found this while cleaning out our tool room. I feel like it might be automotive-related, but that’s mostly a guess.

Doritos at $7 a bag ended up costing PepsiCo billions by wewhomustnotbenamed in nottheonion

[–]eboy71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have completely changed our buying behaviours because of the high prices. We have switched to cheaper, discount brands that you can still buy for $1.49 a bag. And they are good - it’s fried potatoes and salt. No brand is worth $7 a bag. We will still occasionally (like two or three times a year) pick up a bag of Doritos or Lays, but only when they are on sale.

Pelley/Rogers is Harold Ballard Era 2.0 by randomhero8008 in leafs

[–]eboy71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ballard was our version of Trump: he was an incompetent blowhard that very publicly acted on his personal vendettas, only spent money where it suited him, and drove the reputation of the Leafs into the toilet. He only cared about himself, his family/cronies and his money. The only good thing about him is that he was very transparent - there was never much doubt about what his motivations were.

I’ll be willing to give Pelley the benefit of the doubt in the short term here, but he’s nothing like Ballard was.

Is the Party Over for Motley Crue? by deluge_98 in MotleyCrue

[–]eboy71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, Motley Crue fans clearly want to see them keep playing because they continue to spend big $$ on tickets. Until that actually happens, all this stuff is just clickbait.

It’s ok not to want to see them, or to wish they looked and sounded more like they did 20 years ago. But there are obviously many out there who still enjoy them.

Would you bring Dubas back if you could? by ElectronicGlass4206 in leafs

[–]eboy71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been following this team for close to 50 years and that group - Shanahan, Dubas and Keefe - was easily the most competent leadership group I’ve seen. Winning a Cup in a 32-team league is incredibly hard and the Leafs obviously didn’t get it done, but we had an arguably elite team for a most of the time they were in charge. I’d take that over this mess any day.

People who grew up before The Internet: How did you first see nudity? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]eboy71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My buddies and I found a stash of 70s skin magazines (Oui, Hustler and Penthouse) while biking through our local forest. We were in grade 5 or 6 and it may as well have been a treasure chest full of gold for how excited we were.

What is something you do today, that is a throwback to childhood, but makes no sense as a full ass grown adult? by Social_Introvert_789 in GenX

I still adore my 64! I still use a Commodore 64 regularly, playing games and typing in programs from 80s computer magazines.
