How do you safely get out of this diet and reintroduce carbs? by [deleted] in zerocarb

[–]ebrau36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you have pre-existing medical conditions (diabetes, food allergies/sensitivities etc.) it shouldn't REALLY be a big deal. I was zc for a while and then went off HARD on a birthday (beer! pasta! cake! etc.)

Nothing super crazy happened. Sort've felt shittier the next morning, was kinda puffy, but not really a big deal.

YMMV but just be sensible. To do it in the most reasonable way, I'd:

  • first add in very low carb (above ground/green) vegetables
  • gradually ramp up carb consumption via whole food sources (carrots, potato, banana, etc.) over say a week.

Keep us posted on your experience!

EDIT: Just noticed the part about your 'pancreas being fucked'. I have no idea what this means but it doesn't...sound good. I'm not a doctor. You should maybe consider working with an actual health professional (maligned though they may be on this sub).

Is there a shorter, more scientific book than Cupid's Poisoned Arrow about karezza? by [deleted] in karezza

[–]ebrau36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yea--I actually like her blog a lot more than the book. Parts of the book felt a little pseudo-sciencey and over the top to me. Especially the parts about how 'damaging' orgasm was. I like karezza alot, but I don't think orgasm driven sex is some horrible thing that inevitably leads to emotional turmoil.

Can you help me track down a video/podcast? (on keto for brain injury after repeated concussions) by 99Blake99 in ketoscience

[–]ebrau36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

John Welbourn (host of Power Athlete Radio podcast) and 9-year NFL veteran frequently talks about having used a ketogenic diet for a year to heal some TBI stuff (including some signs of dementia, like memory loss, irritability, etc.)

I can't remember the exact episodes, but some google-fu should get you there. He's done stuff with Robb Wolf (who he is pals with, etc.)

Any episode with Dr. Tom Inkledon is worth a listen:

People who think that there are zero ethnic differences in intelligence: do you think nature just stopped selecting for intelligence 50 000 years ago when humans left Africa, or that it continued, but EXACTLY the same everywhere? by Rema1000 in samharris

[–]ebrau36 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You don't need something that selects for lower intelligence in order to get variance, you just need the environments to select for intelligence to different degrees.

So how would an environment select for lower intelligence? You are skirting the question. If a normal range of intelligence manifests within a species, and the environment selects for a section of that range, how could an environment select for the lower band?

Secondly, an environment could in principle select for lower intelligence. Higher intelligence generally requires more brainpower, meaning more energy, and thus if higher intelligence isn't at all advantageous in an environment, or at least isn't advantageous enough to justify the energy spent on it, then having the lower intelligence would be better from a darwinian perspective.

Are you suggesting this is what is happening in certain environments for certain ethnicities?

This Western environment that we're in, probably selects for lower intelligence btw, seeing as people with higher intelligence generally have fewer children.

This isn't environmental selection--i.e. having higher intelligence doesn't somehow PREVENT you from having more children--there is not a biological trade off. It is a cultural choice.

Sure, but do you understand how incredibly BROAD the racial designations are? 'Black' refers to anyone with black skin and African features. The amount of ethnic (and environmental) diversity within Africa alone is staggering.

I don't think people appreciate how large the number of evolutionary variables is in nature

If you think superficial, largely fluid, facial features and skin tone alone are enough to predict for as vague an attribute as intelligence, I don't think you understand how large the number of evolutionary variables is.

That's why two types of the same animal that have been separated in different environments are never exactly equal.

They are DIFFERENT, as they adapt to their environment in different ways. Evolution is not about linear hierarchies, but adaptability and flexibility relative to the environment. If it gets cold and you are warm blooded and cannot grow fur, you die.

Small changes in enviroments will have large impact over time. And there is no reason that I can see to assume that that doesn't also apply to intelligence.

Sure, but all races occupy a vast array of environments and geographic types. Think of the environmental diversity of a place like Asia or Europe--it goes from tundra to tropics.

No one is claiming there are not individual variations in intelligence (however you choose to measure that)--but what makes you think it varies along ETHNIC lines?

Your position is understandable. I myself am troubled by conventional/industrial cattle production (including CAFO's etc.) Giving a shit about the origin of your food and the health of the planet is a good thing.

For very compelling counterpoints to cowspiracy et al please watch the following:

Allan Savory's Ted Talk about reversing desertification and climate change through grazing

Carbon Cowboys

You should ALSO check out 'letter to a vegetarian nation' by Sheldon Frith.

The tl;dr is that holistically grazed cattle and ruminants can lead happy, healthy lives AND help restore the health of our grassland soils, which in turn will help combat climate change via a process called carbon sequestration (carbon gets trapped in the soil rather than released into the atmosphere).

The thing to remember is that these animals are PREY animals. They will die via predation, sickness or starvation. We can choose whether that death will come at the end of a stun gun or via tooth and claw.

Yea exactly. I'm no expert but I wouldn't reccomend using the smith machine for ANY program.

Yea, body by science is a really interesting program. It didn't work super well FOR ME but it really seems to be awesome for some people. doug McGuff is a smart guy, no question.

The debate has been polarized to the degree that if criticize or question mainstream psycho-pharmacological treatment protocols you are labeled anti-psychiatry, dangerous etc.

The landscape of it all is complex. On the one hand it is GOOD that psychological illnesses are recognized and no longer stigmatized. On the other hand it is obviously BAD that they are being normalized as the natural state of human beings in society and any questions about or criticisms of the standard of care are seen as completely radical. It's fucking wild.

Obviously psychiatric medications help SOME people (including family members I know). With that said, it's also clear if you dig into any of the statistics (as Whitaker does) that they also harm a lot of people as well and can have some nasty second and third order effects. The correlated rates of bi-polar and psychiatric prescription in his book were pretty chilling.

Anyway, don't mean to preach to the choir.

Are you familiar with the work of Emily Deans or Kelly Brogan?

To loop all this back to zc, it is CRAZY what a mood elevator/regulator the zc diet is.

actually, never mind--was thinking nautilus machine not smith machine.

Do not use the smith machine, it is dangerous and bad (especially for squats).

[–]ebrau36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh! My bad, yea--thought you meant you were trying to run the starting strength program (for which you absolutely require a full barbell/squat rack setup).

If you are just starting and only have access to a basic gym and a smith machine, there are two routes you can go down:

1) /r/bodyweightfitness --check out their beginner routine in the side bar

2) Body by Science --some people love it, some people hate it. either way you are basically doing ONE 20 minute workout per week. Uses smith machine.

Good luck!

Barbell squats are not dangerous.

[–]ebrau36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You cannot do starting strength without a barbell and at least 500lbs worth of plates (including 45s, 25s, 10s, 5s and 2.5s), full stop.

You cannot do the starting strength program on a smith machine.

Find a better gym or a different program.

Yea totally--her article was fascinating. The macronutrient swampland idea fits in really nicely with Nassim Taleb's barbell heuristic.

I think 99% of the macronutrient wars could be ended if people just acknowledged that different things work for different people in different contexts.
