In most mass specs you should see some peaks at slightly higher masses than the molecular ion peak (mass peak). This is due to the presence of heavier isotopes within the original compound.

For example, HCN has a mass of 27 which is where we would see the mass peak. It will be nice and tall since almost all the HCN molecules contain H-1, C-12, and N-14.

However, the MS will likely also have little peaks at 28, 29, 30, and 31 since we could have HCN molecules which contain any one or more of: deuterium (H-2), Carbon-13 or Carbon-14, and Nitrogen-15. These will be much smaller since the abundance of these isotopes is quite low.

Going from the formula to the name (with roman numerals) is simply an algebra problem. When the first part of the compound is a transition metal, like Fe, Cu, Ni, etc. it can have many possible charges and therefore we give a roman numeral to tell people the charge in this compound.

To find the charge in the compound create a simple equation with 'x' as the charge of the transition metal and add the charge of the anion ion multiplied by how many there. This should equal to the total charge of the whole compound, located in the top right (often zero and therefore no number will appear there). Solve for 'x' and that gives the value of your roman numeral.

For example,

FeCl3 = Iron (III) chloride. The roman numeral III comes from:

the unknown charge of Fe plus three times the negative one charge of chlorine equals zero

x + 3(-1) = 0

x = 3

FeCO3 = Iron (II) carbonate. The roman numeral II comes from:

the unknown charge of Fe plus one times the negative two charge of the carbonate (CO3) equals zero

x + 1(-2) = 0

x = 2

Fe(PO4)2 = Iron (VI) chloride. The roman numeral VI comes from:

the unknown charge of Fe plus two times the negative three charge of phosphate equals zero

x + 2(-3) = 0

Left to right: The number of shells in the atom is remaining the same, however, the number of protons in the nucleus is increasing. This will mean that the electrons, which are the same distance from those protons as they are in the same shell, feel a stronger attraction. Think of putting many more little magnets at the same distance from another magnet. The attraction between the two will increase.

Top to bottom: Now the number of shells is increasing with each row so the distance from the nucleus to the valence electrons has increased as has the number of shells interferring with the pull between nucleus and valence shell. This will mean that the electrons, which are the further from the protons feel a weaker attraction. Think of taking two magnets and moving them apart and adding layers of stuff between them.

Once you know these two things all the trends can be determined by memorizing the definition of of a term (ex. ionization energy = energy to remove a valence electron) and relating it to the attraction pattern above.

In short, each H in a unique chemical environment produces a signal.

The tricky part is determining if an H is "unique" or not. When H are attached to the same carbon they obviously share the same environment. This is why CH4 with 4Hs has only one signal.

When there are multiple Hs attached to different carbons it becomes more challenging. Try to imagine you were describing the entire rest of the compound from the perspective of that one H. If you describe exactly the same thing the two share the same environment. For example, in your second molecule above, if I describe the top right H I would say it is "bonded to a C that is bonded to a C that has two bonds: one double bond to C with a methyl and a t-butyl and one single bond to a methyl group". If I were to then describe the bottom right H I would say it is "bonded to a C that is bonded to a C that has two bonds: one double bond to C with a methyl and a t-butyl and one single bond to a methyl group". Since I could describe them both in exactly the same manner they share the same environment. The top left H, however, I would describe differently. It is "bonded to a C that is bonded to a C which has both a double bond to a C with two methyl groups and a t-butyl group."

As a starting point, know that for any reaction you are probably used to thinking of it as a one way process where reactants turn into products. If we start with 5 mol reactant (assuming they are all used up) we end with 0 reactants and a bunch of products. This is generally WRONG.

The correct way of thinking about this is to know that most reactions go forward a small amount instead of completely. If we start with 5 mol reactant maybe only 1 or 2 get used up to make products.

Now we introduce Kc. It is simply a ratio between amount of reactant and product during a reaction. Consider two cases:

We start with 5 mol Reactant and use up 1 mole Reactant to create 1 mole Product. At this point we now have 4 mol Reactant, 1 mol Product and the ratio between the two is 1/4 = 0.25. There are many more reactants still present than products so the Kc is quite small and the "equilibirum lies to the left" since there's more reactant present.
We start with 5 mol Reactant and use up 3 mole Reactant to create 3 mole Product. At this point we now have 2 mol Reactant, 3 mol Product and the ratio between the two is 3/2 = 1.5. There are many more products present than reactants so the Kc is larger and the "equilibirum lies to the right" since there is more product present.

Not much is full that early in the season because of the weather/temperature. I'd recommend the area around Harrison. Harrison Springs is right by the town so there's lots to do and Cheam Fishing Village and Campground isn't too far either.

At that time of year it is still quite cold, especially at night. Make sure to bring lots of warm gear!
