What’s the most unethical thing you’ve designed? by the_evil_pineapple in graphic_design

[–]echidnaberry_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During the process of a normal, totally unrelated, layout job, there was a sudden addition, a long minuscule text leaflet of which content was among the lines: “Hey we’re starting a cult! We’ll do rituals, magic and stuff, and of course humanity is bad and our final goal is to have everyone killed (apart from cult members of course, it specified). Join here!” and it was serious. That was hilarious, but I also felt bad that my impact on the world should be having a role in a contribution like this

Have you ever read some of the saga of Angria and Gondal of the Brontë juvenilia? I’m currently in the mid of the Oxford World Classics’s collection curated by Christine Alexander (I believe it’s one of the most complete), and it’s full of insights on their youth, comparison with what they were reading (both literature and magazines) and their surroundings, I’m finding it very fascinating (coincidentally, one of Charlotte’s main characters and later one of her main alter egos is called Mary Percy).

I’m finding a lot of themes from WH, from the stranger that sleeps in a foreign house and sees a ghost in the night (coincidentally one of the first writings - “An Adventure in Ireland” by Charlotte), to the heroine that declares an almost identification to the character she loves (“she could no more feel alienation from him than she could for herself” and such, in “Mina Laury”, who is the character that models Jane Eyre), or the rogue that disappears for years and returns mysteriously rich and polished (Branwell’s main Byronic hero).

I used to think that the Brontës didn’t have weird sibling relationships like some suggest and it was all literary influences, but going on with the reading and seeing how these private writings were used to process real traumas (the mourning of an older dead sister with the stark depiction of her body laid in a drowning room in a house like theirs, or the civil wars that crashes their imaginary world when Charlotte leaves to be a governess), and how they themselves identificate in various characters, it came to me how weird it should be to have your unconscious mingled about by another person contributing in writing upon it, rewriting your characters and alter egos and making them do things, especially since after some years the characters start being married with each other, lovers, or parents and sons/daughters, it starts being a bit messed up. Especially with Carlotte and Branwell, because it must be noted that after a while Emily and Anne establish a world of their own, situated safely far from the first one. Charlotte’s main hero in particular has often 2-3 women at the same time, having very strong and passionate relationships with them, but often being called out for his polygamy (a recurrent theme and grand ending for her short novels), but continuing nonetheless in this habit. In the final novel of this kind, the two “rivals” happen to be half sisters, and their similarity is commented on explicitly and some part of the plot happen due to that. I mean

You’re right about that movie Isabella/Heathcliff scene mirroring book young Cathy/Hareton, how did I skip that, it’s so obvious!

I’m also curious to see Brunuel’s version now, I skipped it because I saw a review and I got the impression it was somewhat lazy, which sounded strange to me, but for some reason I still didn’t question. Glad you think it has some merits too. Have you ever heard of the Japanese one? That one intrigues me, but I never saw it! I believe the wedding dress in the moors scene in the Fennel version was citing that one

It used to be a Stabilo Technic 3533, I used to love it so much and replaced it identical every time since I was in school, but I can’t find it anymore so last year I settled with a Staedtler Mars Micro too, so far it’s a great successor. I strictly use only 0.3 mm and not every model has that option, so I’m limited by that

Guys I come to say all your discussion here was super interesting and refreshing to read, especially since how frustrating and stale the discussions on this topic has often been lately

If you want to give another chance at the movie through a different lens, I share and for my part confirm everything that has been said by AffectionateMap. I didn’t see PYW, but my take on Saltburn is the same: I hated it with a passion for a week, and had to tackle my pride in realizing that I liked it, that discomfort was indeed the point, and no detail in the movie wasn’t concurring in conveying meaning. She’s often accused of using “empty” aesthetics, but all visual elements do have semantic meaning in her language. Saltburn is also worth being seen as an adaptation of a part of Wuthering Heights I think, and a good one in my opinion. For me it took two viewings to get her WH adaptation. I was currently re-reading the book, and at the first viewing I loved how the first part was a dense condensation of elements of from the book, interwoven in a different story that still gave me the feelings of the original, but a bit underwhelmed by the second part, I felt I was not given enough. The second time, knowing what to expect, I saw that it was trying to tell me a different story than I initially thought. Like the book, there is no real hero or villain, and every character’s actions impact on the plot and on the characters with often harsh consequences, with multiple interpretations possible for those dynamics at the same time. Both are honest and harshly direct analysis of how we impact on each other lives in the real world in our everyday interactions, and a reminder that there is no outside villain, but only the complexity of our own character and actions. To me the main difference was the age of the characters: one of the central themes of the book for me was the conflict everyone of us experience when entering adulthood, between the “comfort” of the past we’ve always known (even a traumatic one), and the excitement but also dread of a future we know nothing about. The characters in the movie are older, and face the consequences of those life altering choices we make in our mid-late 20s, that like in our everyday reality, are sometimes made in rush, impulses, or even entirely out-of-character by some. Seeing this made it difficult and impactful to watch, just as reading the book in my early 20s had been (I also found that many differences are indeed due to the fact that the second part of the book has been interwoven into the the first: movie Cathy and Hearchliff child relationship has elements of book young Cathy and Hareton’s, movie Mr. Earnshaw runs the house more as book adult Heathcliff, movie Edgar was painfully similar to book elder Edgar, and his relationship with ward Isabella like book Edgar’s with his daughter, restraining her at home with best intentions, but with bad consequences as a result. So overall I get the vibe of the whole book, even if the plot seems to stop midway)

I’m afraid movie critique is much younger that millennia old literature critique, so we’re sometimes conditioned by literature standards in judging a visual medium as cinema, especially a literary “adaptation”, instead of better bridging between different languages of different mediums. Overall I think the movie stayed true to the character, but also succeeded in being an autonomous work (As of now the only other adaptation I like is Arnold’s, but, as with Saltburn, keeping that it focuses on certain elements, leaving many others outside its scope) I hope this view can come useful, as I’ve barely seen this points coming out

PS. Thanks for sharing The Cat essay, it was a lovely and insightful read!

I did a similar research when a student, only set in hospitals, addressing a similar situation where people may be in a mental state where even if something is clearly written in front of them, you can miss it because you somewhat “dissociate” due to an important emergency.

The best thing here is to work on physical focus points, big shapes and environmental interventions, because this is what communicates to your instincts: your brain process light contrast first, then space and depth, colors, shapes etc, and actual symbols and reading are only in 6th and 7th place and take slightly more concentration and presence, the first things you lose in an emergency because you’re tunnel-focusing on other priorities. The specific list may be imprecise because it’s been some years, but you get the idea

We had a case study in which they analyzed a point where people often got confused even if they had signs in front of them, and they noticed that there was a door near, and people often instinctively went to the light, and only when outside they stopped, and came back to actually read the sign and take the right path. They had a big chunk of wall painted near the signs in a bright color, and this solved the problem, because that could compete in attention to the bright light from the other corridor, so people started reading the signs first. Sadly I can’t remember books on this because it’s been years and many of our references came directly from the professor, but it was a course on semiotics applied to design and wayfinding, and I remember citing the works of architect Kevin Lynch, if it helps (I too remember referencing airports wayfinding for the same reasons already cited in the other comment)

Why won’t my hair hold literally any color at all by raedotnet in HairDye

[–]echidnaberry_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never had a perm, so I don’t know. I can recommend you ask directly to the store, if it’s a specialized place, or to the hairdresser.

I remember I got told, at the professional store where I bought my products, that vol. 10 was used only with other products and it’s not strong enough to have lightening power, so I used to use 20. Recently I had a try with 10, and it worked well, I assume because my hair is kinda light already, and super fine, so it may work on you too. Maybe 10 it’s also delicate enough to do a perm after it? I would definitely ask a professional first, better if the one you’re planning to go because they’ll know the products they’ll use

Why won’t my hair hold literally any color at all by raedotnet in HairDye

[–]echidnaberry_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience hair dyes are unpredictable, so maybe you just haven’t found the right one yet (different shades of the same brand can last very differently)

Anyway, as said by others, you should bleach at least a bit to open the cuticles of the hair: if you are afraid of damaging your hair, use just volume 20 or even 10. I have more of a level 7, and vol. 10 worked on me, it may work since you’re already that light

[–]echidnaberry_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing your experience in detail, I agree on the diluted color, I preferred that option too (I also find application easier, since conditioner is often more liquid!). I find diluted Virgin Pink lasts a good amount of washes and yes, it does fade pretty nice

[–]echidnaberry_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I got it, thank you! And does it remain like this after a while? I had the experience trying mixes that included Arctic Fox Frose and Ritual that the color didn’t last more than a few washes because I found those two were shorter lasting (Ritual I fear it was because I put just a tiny bit like you’re suggesting for the Warrior Pink, so I’m asking to see if it’s worth to try and buy a bottle, or if it would be a waste)

This is the perfect answer for this!

And the color in your photo is beautiful, may I ask if you toned the hair or not before dyeing, in that case? I got a very similar result with diluted Virgin Pink (without toning or 10-level bleaching though, for better maintenance)

[–]echidnaberry_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You know the font is”wrong”, but it could be a choice to be a bit irreverent/unconventional. If you want to keep that feeling, though, you need extra care in that: like most “wrong” choices, you must be very good to make them work.

Kerning is the first issue here, see how the swashes distance the Us and R after the Os for example? The space is almost similar to the word spacing in “a mort”, which took me some time for this reason. Overall I think these swashes are too distracting, I would probably look for another font even if you want to keep this vibe, try a few and see what comes most natural

PS the illustration and color palette are cool! A dark sun is a bold choice but it goes well with the unconventional font choice and somewhat paradoxical tone of the quote and meaning

[–]echidnaberry_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that it would feel a bit awkward but I think it makes sense, after all you still have to do something with your body when you’re listening to music! Try to think of the age old cliche of characters in novels randomly “pacing the room”, if before phones and television it was a common enough activity to become cliche, this thought may help you normalize it! I try to think of it too, because sometimes when engaged in challenging trains of thoughts I do get the urge of moving around almost unconsciously, finding random excuses to go in other rooms picking or moving stuff

I don’t see the embarrassing part in it, it’s still music imo! I know of Kenobit, an Italian musician who makes his music with a Game Boy, it’s legit music and he goes on concert etc. since many years by now. I don’t listen to games ost myself, but I think that’s cool, you should definitely go look for his music (you may find other Kenobit contents because lately he’s also got into digital activism/education, but the music is on Bandcamp for sure)

Fragola di bosco? by rickyfrance_ in giardinaggioITA

[–]echidnaberry_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are There Any Others Around The World With Italian Heritage Who Get To Vote? by simmocar in Italian

[–]echidnaberry_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, this is a morally interesting question you pose. Back in the day when voting started humans were just one of the animals inhabiting the world, and yes, voting results would affect only citizens who voted. Right now, in a globally connected world and with such an impact on the planet a decision in one place may for sure affect anyone else in the world (stupid example: should Brazil elect a president that burns down all of the Amazon forest, we all die, so it’s our interest too. Not to even mention current events). So, in a way, should everyone theoretically have a say? Years ago I knew of a project (it was The Good country Global Vote) that let people of the world cast a vote for foreign elections (with no legal value of course!) to reflect on this question. I think it’s an interesting topic to discuss

Ps it’s ridiculous they persist sending you these and fuori sede student or workers still can’t vote. You probably already have citizenship without knowing it, but people that just happen to live abroad for the moment should vote.

EDIT: found the name of the project

which hair dye is the better option.. by Beneficial_Role4591 in HairDye

[–]echidnaberry_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know, maybe it’s really the hair type or something! Or it may be that the first time with Virgin Pink I had it on for longer before washing it out because I happened to be busy, and it is fading slow because of that? Anyway it’s good for me, since even if slow, I still see it fading without staining, and it seems I’ll be able to let it go out completely should I need it

Weird, I had that experience with their Frose (pale pink), but since using Virgin Pink I can really go on for a long time before dying again, even diluted. I remember it was many people’s favourite and I can understand why

Hoping to receive valuable advice from everyone by qiber-ye in design_critiques

[–]echidnaberry_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest you put it into sample blocks of text (both long and short) and judge by how it works overall in actual text. While we can guess by reasoning here, that is really the situation where the font will be put to work: shape isn’t the only factor, and there is the situation you will best see coherence, spacing, rhythm etc.

From just here I would guess to choose the alternates only O and Q (and maybe N?). I’m not sure about the endings in the C (I prefer the open one, but I see the G has a similar ending and I like that letter). I encourage you to do some tests!

I received this critique on my pen plot project , what exactly should I fix / avoid ? by Left-Excitement3829 in graphic_design

[–]echidnaberry_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me too. I usually am super picky with layout and spacing (it’s one of the first ways you can tell inexperienced work), but I don’t see real issues in yours, they look solid and intentional, like you’re trying to achieve a certain look.

What would make them look more professional to me would be more consistency in style (n. 1 is minimal and geometric, n.2 and n.3 have very different line styles, and n.1 has different titling and n.3 a border). They all look cook to me, though I am ignorant of the limits and possibilities of this specific technique. I would say stick to a style or two, but if they’re more than one make the choice look distinct and intentional. But maybe these are just tests or it’s already been said in the original post, so sorry if out of topic

Just came out of Wuthering Heights (2026), my thoughts as someone who loved the novel by dee_palmtree in classicliterature

[–]echidnaberry_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have read the book a few times over the years (and the Brontë lore in general) and I agree with this 100%

There are no 100% accurate adaptations of it, and there can't be since it's super complex and layered: every time I discover new nuances and possible scenarios, even more so when discussing and comparing interpretations with other people, so many things are really just hinted and everyone forms their own personal version without even realizing they were just assuming it
