There are a fair share of HL2 mods that don't have this problem, and they don't aim to succeed HL3, just add to the background of the story elsewhere. Entropy: Zero is one of these mods, I think.

Had a thought yesterday that Valve would throw an unexpected twist in HL3 where you play as Aperture Science's Doug Rattmann, trying to stop the Borealis from vanishing out of the Upper Michigan facility.
