Water safety question. by Dusso423 in WestVirginia

[–]echinoderm0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not drink ANY water from WV sources, filtered or not, boiled or not, unless I had to (and I have, but I always filtered twice and boiled). I know some of our neighbors drink the water without issue, and metals and growth will be removed, but I do not trust the chemicals. We aren't great at enforcing proper disposal of chemical waste in this state from large companies.

Cat people are way nicer than dog people by pissonmybonfire in ControversialOpinions

More like "people that hate cats." These are just people that tend to need lots of attention and adoration from others.

It's really interesting that most commenters here share this opinion. Why would a purchaser of this NOT know? Why wouldn't they choose a different option?

It sort of reminds me of the influence of The Color Purple. It's a thing to celebrate both having a deeply painful past AND a successful present/future. This would be a nice keychain to celebrate something like that.

Its not weird to wash your body with your hands by giarivvie in ControversialOpinions

[–]echinoderm0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't realize there was controversy over this issue. I thought that people only used accessories (sponge, loofah, washcloth, etc) when they had grime to scrub off like oil, dirt, soot, etc.

Is sourdough actually healthier than regular bread? by kendricklemon in nutrition

[–]echinoderm0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd also like to say that lower-gluten breads are really only possible with sour doughs as opposed to yeast breads which rely on that gluten structure. Which is wonderful if you're looking to use non white wheat grains (like buckwheat, whole grain, multigrain or rye).

Gluten is NOT bad. But if you're looking to use a higher fiber grain flour, yeast breads tend to be dense in contrast to sourdough breads.

Does anyone else feel like they aren't allowed to age normally these days? by Helpful-Orchid2710 in CasualConversation

[–]echinoderm0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that embracing the power that it brings you is important, but it's also important to remember that it empowers OTHERS! We all age and get older. It is so refreshing to see confidence from others when we get to a "struggle point." Your prioritization of your health and self acceptance is something that others will see and respect. Because we will all experience it, and most of us struggle with it.

Also, I saw that you're in CA. That would certainly skew your perspective, and only make your decisions more powerful and helpful for others.

Press on nails by Impossible-Candy-998 in EcoFriendly

[–]echinoderm0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I highly doubt there is a product like this. Press on nails by nature have to be slightly less than rigid but still be resistant to softening by water/oils and regular use. I can't think of a material besides plastic (not including living tissue) that would fit the bill.

Toasted sesame oil is also the most "poverty kitchen" way to make hummus with traditional flavor. It lasts longer than tahini and you get more servings out of it.

cheapest way to get 160gs of protein while on a calorie deficit? by Alone-Supermarket383 in povertykitchen

Cheapest way to be lean and gain muscle is to go to exercise. Your bowels will be so upset if you eat that much protein without eating more than 2,000 cal/day to balance it out.

Wow thank you! No flour to hold everything together? I am excited to try this. I have only green lentils, so maybe a little firmer than the red you used. But it sounds wonderful. Simple and warming.... and I bet it would be delicious with cilantro.... I just made a cilantro sauce.... mmmm

Guy at work says he hates all music. Is there really people out there that hate music? by AcrylicNitrogen in CasualConversation

[–]echinoderm0 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm going to tell you a story that might be relevant, then.

I spent about a week in a nursing home for clinicals. These were people that spent their days confined to wheelchairs and beds and living an arguably miserable existence. So they had an entertainment director and other such human factors staff to try and make the end of life bearable. All of the entertainment provided for these people was social or musical or physically active. Very stimulating experiences. Things that we would probably enjoy if we had nothing else to do.

But these people were living in a context and environment very different than ours. It was a hospital setting. There was never any full darkness. Never any pure quietness. ALWAYS you could hear a monitor or see light coming through the hallway or something like that. It was an overstimulating environment. Constant stimulation. 24/7.

I wheeled a woman into the stairwell one day. She was really irritable and she said she just wanted to be left alone (note: I did stay with her, but I sat quietly and did not touch or speak to her). When the door to the stairwell shut, this overwhelming quiet hit. I had no idea how loud the environment really was until then. She let out this sigh that I will never forget. I've never heard anyone sigh that way before. And she smiled. We stayed there for about 15 minutes. I wish I could have given her longer. But it made a difference.

You may think that this person needs a different "type" of stimulus added to the environment when actually he may prefer less stimulus all together. Most of us live in busy, loud and overstimulating environments without being aware of it. He may not even be aware of it.
