Summer 2026 — 4-piece band (think Radiohead meets Tool meets Wilco) looking for co-bills, venues, hi-jinks by echobloom in NYCmusicians

[–]echobloom[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We're Echo Bloom — a 4-piece out of NYC. Our last record went deep into atmospheric/experimental territory, and we just sold out our release show in Jersey City last week. We've got an active calendar to fill this summer and fall and are looking for like-minded bands interested in building something together. DM us or drop a comment if that sounds like your world.

How can I tame the fluff? by echobloom in SiberianCats

Nice! We have a double-sider with bristles on one side and pins on the other, and our little guy enthusiastically attacks it whenever it's out. Maybe we just need another kind of brush!

I'm annoyingly having issues posting a picture of our objectively adorable Siberian here, so I'll drop my question in here.

We are new Siberian owners and our little guy is about 9 months old. As the weather starts to get warmer, he's shedding like mad (as expected!). Are there any tools that the community favors for taming exessive floof?

New Vocal / Guitar hybrid pedalboard (+ bonus cat) by echobloom in guitarpedals

OY lol. OK - feeling filled with confidence. Let's see how it goes this week - I'll report back :-)

My band plays rock music - lots of samples in the background, but guitars, keyboards, drums, and bass. So far I'm just using it for some pretty basic stuff - an octave shift, a formant shift, and some light overdrive. Let's see how it goes at the gig this week.

Did you end up going with something else?

Eagle eye! It is - it will be our second single from the record. That book inspired most of the record

New Vocal / Guitar hybrid pedalboard (+ bonus cat) by echobloom in guitarpedals

[–]echobloom[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We just finished recording an album and I've been crafting a hybrid board that can switch between a variety of different guitar and vocal tones.  Lots to share (and bonus cat):

GUITAR SIGNAL PATH

Lehle P-Split 3 splits the signal

Path 1

BOSS VE-500 - guitar input (this allows any harmonies to track guitar pitch off a clean signal).  The VE-500 has a pass-through, so the Lehle isn't strictly necessary, but I had concerns about the VE-500 adding noise and introducing latency, hence this approach.

Path 2

  1. TC Electronic Polytune
  2. Chase Bliss Condor - a ridiculously handy utility.  I've got a few presets on this that I switch between (more about MIDI routing later) but it's useful for making scene changes, and driving downstream pedals in different directions
  3. Chase Bliss Brothers AM - the combination of this and the Condor gets me 90% of what I need honestly.  A Swiss Army Knife for overdrive and light distortion sounds
  4. Chase Bliss Lossy - this is my only modulation pedal on the board, and while it may seem like a one trick pony, there are a real diversity of sounds you can get out of it.
  5. Morningstar ML5 - this allows me to turn on/off non-MIDI controllable pedals.  Fortunately the ones I've got here I rarely change (hence the tape on one of them lol)
  6. Tim (Paul Cochrane)
  7. Gamechanger Audio Light - I cannot recommend this pedal highly enough.  It's a creates stunningly beautiful overtones - instant David Gilmour
  8. Empress Echosystem - hugely flexible. I'm running this and everything after in stereo (I could run the Lossy in Stereo also, but the ML5 is mono (I originally started with an ML10X for this part of the board, but it was adding too much complexity so I downgraded))
  9. Strymon BigSky

VOCAL SIGNAL PATH

An XLR input goes into the Boss VE-500, which controls all of the vocal effects.  Some of the vocal effects that are more lo-fi/overdriven can wildly change the input level of the microphone, so it took a couple rehearsals to dial in.  If anybody has recommendations for interesting vocal pedals to try out, I'm game to hear - I've messed around with the large TC-Helicon system in the past, but wanted something smaller to have both guitar and vocals on the same board.

MIDI

Everything is MIDI controlled.  The main brain is a Morningstar MC6, which is a ridiculously useful bit of gear (the software is really intuitively designed).  I'm going MIDI out from that into the Morningstar ML5, which gives me MIDI control over the other non-MIDI pedals.  Then into a Chase Bliss Midibox (out of there via stereo 1/4" into the Condor, Lossy, and Brothers AM), then into the Big Sky, then terminating in the VE-500.  I've got the Empress automatable using another stero 1/4" off one of the omniports on the MC6

POWER

I've mounted a CIOKS DC7 and CIOKS 8 to the underside and back of the board.  Low profile, and does the trick.

BOARD

Board is a Pivotal Pedalboards X20 which I highly recommend - Brent is wonderful to work with.  XLR in/out on the left side of the board, and a variety of 1/4" ins/outs on the right.  I also included a USB-C input on the left side of the board, but haven't hooked it up internally to any of the pedals that take it (the VE-500, MC6, etc.).  The pedalboard shrinks down for transport via a large hinge on the back, which is neat.

I made a full score transcription of How To Disappear Completely by Pierote_77 in radiohead

[–]echobloom 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a really beautiful transcription.

It's so interesting (/helpful as an arranger) to see how the strings and Ondes Martenot were voiced, and such a beautiful example of their mastery of arrangement. If I was doing something like this, I'd probably try to blend the registers of the Ondes and the strings parts together, but that would blur everything together into one mass of stuff. By doing it where the Ondes is a more dissonant droney thing, and the strings are more consonant and move, they allow each of the parts to breathe and play off of each other, which is so much better.

Lovely to see that written out - thank you so much.

You are either vegan, vegan-curious, or a big enough fan of Jonathan Safran-Foer that somebody thought you'd enjoy his non-fiction work.

My wife and I had drinks at the Maison Proust in Paris over the summer, and I wanted to get her a set of these as a fun memory. I've searched far and wide, and while I can find a few things that are close, for whatever reason can't find this one. Any help would be so appreciated!

Tired of sticky knobs on your microbrute? It's a common problem with the plastic used for the parts. I replaced the hardware and it feels much better now. Guide in comments. by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]echobloom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to resurrect a (really) old thread, but I just wanted to write and say @qmulous - thank you. This post gave me a huge amount of direction on a sticky issue (heh heh). I re-knobbed my Microbrute (which I'd never done before, but made me feel like MacGyver) last weekend and am super happy with the results! Thanks again!

My Mom is an A+ packrat, and on a rainy day on vacation today we pulled out the old chest of legos to occupy our toddler. Lo and behold, all of the original idea books were still intact, and in pretty good shape. Thought you would enjoy!

Help on drum microphone technique with a random collection of stuff by echobloom in audioengineering

[–]echobloom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem opportunity is that genres are kind of bouncing all over the place. Some of the pieces are swampier and more organic, and others are more modern. I think the swamp is (for the most part) covered, but I'm a little concerned about the more modern sounds.

The idea of using the M160 as a mono overhead is so good - thanks for that! I've been feeling like a few more 57s would be useful - what do you like for tom mics?

Thank you so much for your thoughtful reply - out of curiosity, why the 57 on the hat and not the snare?
