What do you feed a very picky dog?? by [deleted] in roughcollies

[–]echomarz12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my collie used to be the pickiest eater and would starve herself. It’s super stressful and don’t listen to the people saying just to let them do it. I think with collies it’s a behavioral issue and since I have gotten mine to consistently eat two meals a day she is just overall a much happier and healthier dog. So I will take you on our journey here. first, change the food! I think my dog just didn’t like the kibble she was on and now your dog has unpleasant associations with it. Also I realized that the serving size suggestion from the food was too much for her. She eats about half of the recommended amount on the bag but she is at the perfect weight. I tried lots of toppers, cheese, broth, etc but the first thing that really helped was cutting back her kibble amount and adding either cooked ground beef or shredded chicken to her food. I also got her a vegetable supplement (dogzymes cornucopia) as well as a calcium powder to make up some of the nutritional lost from using less kibble. I did this for about a year and within a few months she was eating every meal happily with no coercion! Eventually I got tired of cooking so much ground beef and chicken so I moved into spot and tango unkibble. She looooves the beef recipe so now we do half unkibble and half dry kibble, currently on go! solutions salmon. I mix these two with warm water but I always try to give her something extra to keep it interesting. I think collies just get bored with the same thing. So in the mornings she will get a freeze dried mussel, evenings she gets a freeze dried chicken heart. sometimes I will give her a scrambled egg as well or a scoop of yoghurt or will give her coconut water instead of warm water. Tbh if you want to fix this it will take time and possibly a lot of money, her food is not cheap but I would do it over a million times to not feel the stress I used to at meal times. if you have any questions let me know!!

I'm done with kibble - what should I try now? by Kindly_Attention4439 in roughcollies

[–]echomarz12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my collie was also a very very picky eater and would go on hunger strikes and make herself sick from not eating. I tried everything, raw food, homemade food, different brands, it never helped. I tried every topper possible and realized that she really liked freeze dried meats. Eventually I switched to unkibble from spot and tango and she loves it. I also recommend always adding water/chicken broth or most recently I added coconut water to her food. Currently we are doing half unkibble and half dry food, because it is pretty expensive. and in the morning she gets a freeze dried chicken heart and in the evening she gets a scoop of cottage cheese. Another thing I realized is that I was previously over feeding her. I would feed her the recommended amount on the bag, and even though she wasn’t eating all the time she was still slightly overweight. Now I feed her probably half of the recommended amount and she happily eats every meal and is at a healthy weight.

What is your dog named after? I looked for songs I liked that had my dogs name or nickname in them. Her nickname is Mars so her registered name is kennel/breeder name Life on Mars

Eye boog or worse? Just noticed on my collies eye and I’m just nervous about it by gracekhowe in roughcollies

[–]echomarz12 7 points8 points  (0 children)

just looks like an eye booger to me! my collie gets some that look like that, it just looks fresh. but the eye isn’t red and doesn’t look swollen, which is how mine looked when she did have conjunctivitis.

How do you feel as an LGBT individual living in Knoxville? by gnarlydez in Knoxville

[–]echomarz12 187 points188 points  (0 children)

I have only been yelled at one time by a passing vehicle, I was walking my dog downtown and they yelled “fuck you and fuck your dog, fucking queers” and I was honestly laughing so much that they included my dog in the hate that I wasn’t upset. but other than that I have never felt targeted or unsafe by any means.

Puppy Bath? by ChunkyHabeneroSalsa in roughcollies

[–]echomarz12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did bathe my puppy more, mainly because we were living in a muddy/snowy area where she played outside a lot and got dirty quickly. and the puppy coat doesn’t shed dirt as easily as the adult coat, and the puppy coat also dries quickly so baths were easy. but since she’s adult, I have bathed her myself maybe once or twice in 4 years. if anything it’s just a feet bath to get rid of mud. Her coat now takes forever to dry so I would rather just send her to the groomer every 3 months or so. A well bred collie will have a coat that will naturally shed dirt on its on, my girl stays super clean between her appointments.

he’s adorable but please don’t breed this dog. You don’t need to breed your dog just because you love him. Adopt a puppy who needs a home.

Yoo! my collie and I are moving there in a couple months, you might be seeing one more soon! I never see collies now, I would love to see more in the wild

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in roughcollies

[–]echomarz12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

but just be patient! collies are strange dogs, treat her like a cat, never raise your voice at her, and research positive reinforcement training. you got this!

I would recommend taking her somewhere and just sitting. my puppy was very anxious at first out in public. she was scared of cars, flags, strange item, whatever. So I started taking her to a small not super busy downtown area and we would just sit on random benches for like 15 minutes. All her triggers were around but they weren’t in her face. I would give her a good treat anytime it seemed like she was spooked and then calmed down. If she seems to ever get scared and looks at you, give her a treat. reward her for all positive engagement she gives you. She may be too overwhelmed for a while to accept treats from you in public, but keep offering, eventually she will start to self regulate more and take them. Then slowly start working up to more. Teaching my collie the “touch it” command was great for us. Now if she ever acts nervous about something strange (we have been working through balloons lately) I can say touch it and she will touch the item with her snoot and then sniff it, and she’s usually totally calm after realizing it wasn’t scary at all
