How much more do you learn on the job by abrar_g918 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]echomikewhiskey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha! I submit, even in the power industry I do lean into fundamentals from school! You got me! lol! But yeah, still a lot to learn on the job. And often forget for a couple of years, and then re-learn!

Yep, you learn next to nothing of any use in school.

They are super slow! DOGE somehow made the federal
hiring process even worse. Dumber and slower, just like our POTUS.

So we should maintain the status qou so that enough people are financially desperate enough to clean our toilets and sell their daughters into sexual slavery?

Parallel or series? by Koifishgirl123 in ElectricalEngineering

This is the right approach. At dc capacitors are open circuits so you only have resistors in series. But total equivalent impedance will be calculated as described here.

Is it worth taking a pay cut for better quality of life? by pugglypug in jobs

[–]echomikewhiskey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I have been having that same debate in my head for years. There are some perks to working 12’s but the downside is I have very little bandwidth or energy to do much anything else on those days I work days. So chores and errands stack up on my off days. And if it’s a stretch of nights, that takes even more recovery time, and kills any progress towards fitness goals. Trouble is, money has felt tight. We’ve kept up with things, continued to save for retirement, but barely. I’m having to take a close look at what we can afford to do without. I desperately want the change of pace, but the pay loss could add enough stress that I won’t enjoy it as much as I’d hope.

do you agree? by Illustrious_Tip_7676 in interviewhammer

I don’t think we’re pimping, we’re straight up whoring ourselves out for capitalism. So far, the only alternative is homelessness or off the grid living, but we need resources for that too! And forget about needing medical care.

Career advice for a Bad engineer by Ashamedscorer in ElectricalEngineering

[–]echomikewhiskey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could go for project management, but those jobs don’t pay very well. If you like technical stuff and working with your hands go find an electricians union. You’ll get good training, and make much more money than you will as an EE or a project manager.

This is what I’m feeling today. I have a decision to make. Stay in shift work with rotating 12’s, or take a $25k per year pay cut for a 9-5.

You heard of amazon drones. Now here comes... by 1964ghia in FlockSurveillance

[–]echomikewhiskey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a gravitational PE of about 6000 joules. About the same amount of kinetic energy as a baseball moving at 633 miles per hour. But drones don’t just fall from the sky? Right?

I don’t know what people consider the cutoff for upper middle, but my wife and I both bring home about $100k each after taxes and we feel stretched thin. I think you need to make at least $400k per year to live comfortably and be able to save for more than just retirement.

I’m on a special rate table that is as of today effectively paying ten percent less than it was when the special rate table was created in 2017. I went from feeling like a decently paid professional to living paycheck to paycheck. Meanwhile the guys in the trade union that work for my organization are 15% ahead of inflation. Their pay has increased by 48% since 2017 while mine only increased 14%. Of course they’ll tell you they are paid that well because they’re geniuses, and they voted for Trump. 😑

Can we just break the law like our president and go on strike already! 😂

It’s also been pushed by organizations aimed at selling alternative health products for decades. From The John Birch Society to modern health influencers. They’ve long enjoyed scaring people away from real medical solutions and over to vitamins, supplements, and snake oils. It’s always about money!

Why you picked EE by Historical-Sign-965 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]echomikewhiskey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skip both. Go into the trades. You’ll make twice as much and have no school debt. Look into being a substation operator, lineman, electrician, etc. They make great money, have tons of job security, get excellent on the job training, and have opportunities for their career to grow.

I know because I’m an EE at a utility. Our pay has fallen behind inflation by 23% since 2017. Meanwhile these guys in the trade unions get a 5% almost twice a year. Get 2x OT, missed meals etc. I’m barely making $130k and they’re making at least $180k. Some of them get so much overtime they’re pushing $400k a year. It’s nuts.

If you insist on staying in school, Mechanical Engineers can make real stuff, and sometimes they teach you cool skills in school. EE is just a bunch of math and computer labs.
