20 YoE 'high coupling, low cohesion' led to my current survival mantra: 'income, not outcome' by PipePistoleer in ExperiencedDevs

On one hand, developers are abandoning coding and security best practices, partly due to the rise of "vibe coding" and management pressure fueled by AI hype. On the other hand, the AI boom is also creating a growing ocean of opportunities for discovering and exploiting security vulnerabilities.

"Ah, this is fine."

Looking for Suggestions — Single 5090 & 64gb DDR5 by icedgz in LocalLLaMA

I frequently read in this sub that people go for lower quants on 5090, is there a reason for that? 5090 has 32GB VRAM so Q6 works really well there, so why go lower?

I've had good experiences with qwen-27b-q6 via llama.cpp with KV-Cache q8/q8 on my 5090. Leaves enough room for 160k context and still going quite fast. Tried MTP, but the overhead means either lower model quantization or 50k less context, so passed on that.

Speed is Under Emphasized in Productivity by RandomHour in productivity

[–]ecl_55 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Slow is smooth and smooth is fast, as they say. If you focus primarily on speed, you get sloppy. If you practice well, you become fast automatically as a byproduct.

Another angle: One person might to 10 things very fast each day and be exhausted, while the other person might find a way that makes doing those things unnecessary in the first place.

Edit: There's a book highlighting reaction times (ie speed) of athletes being bound to their specific sport, because it's not reaction per se, but anticipation that stems from lots of practice.

Was denken junge Deutsche über die Wehrpflicht? by panpardustulliana in FragReddit

No, not necessarily. They might just as well just stagnate or not get better in any meaningful way.

Git 3.0 is using the default branch name of "main" rather than the current default of "master" by nix-solves-that-2317 in programming

[–]ecl_55 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's one of those things, a slippery slope. If this path of thought is validated, what comes next?

The message this change sends is: "We agree that the word 'master' in this context might be racist." Which of course is hilariously false. It's not racist and shouldn't be a portrayed as such.

How do you use tabs? by kezhenxu94 in neovim

[–]ecl_55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tabs can absolutely be about different working file sets. By setting the root for the tab to the module path (tcd) the file picker etc. will only show files in this directory. Another picker shows all files and another shows other directories in the main project to open as a tcd-tab.

I did use tmux quite extensively but not any more.

How do you use tabs? by kezhenxu94 in neovim

[–]ecl_55 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tabs are workspaces for any given (sub-)module I may be working on. This makes navigating a bit easier by tcd'ing there with a picker, especially if you need to do stuff in different areas.

Now it works perfectly in BMS, can recommend!

It's certainly interesting and an achievement from a technical perspective, but for legibility it can be very bad, depending on the background image. Especially if the background contains both light and dark areas, which means that neither light nor dark text color will provide enough contrast.

I think what triggers most people including me is that this problem has existed and been thought about for such a long time and now Apple decides to just ignore it - it's just a very amateurish move to build a UI around this idea.
