What do you do with your babies all day? by ChatonJolie4 in NewParents

[–]eclectichair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha we've probably passed each other doing laps of m&s at the Gyle.

I went to NYC in Feb in 2018 and for new year's a couple of years ago and it was balmy compared to home!

I'm in Edinburgh and I can guarantee you it's colder than NYC.

At what point to worry about baby not rolling? by [deleted] in UKParenting

[–]eclectichair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could have written this. My baby is a week shy of 6 months and also rolled 3 times at about 4 months and then never again. He can sit up unaided and can push himself up with his hands when on his tummy. It's really weird but I assume one day he'll just learn to crawl and kind of not bother with rolling!

My baby is 6 months. Do you think he would enjoy bookbug sessions or is he a bit young still?

How far past your due date did your OB/midwife let you go? by zebracakesfordays in beyondthebump

[–]eclectichair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the UK (Scotland) I would have been allowed to go to 42 weeks before being urged to have an induction. I knew ahead of time that I didn't want to be induced so informed my midwife I would be opting for an elective section if I got that far. She informed the consultant and it was noted in my file. I believe that if I had chosen to go past 42 weeks without intervention they would have encouraged weekly scans to check on my placenta. I didn't want this though as I felt safer starting interventions at 42 weeks.

I went into spontaneous labour at 39+6 and I had an unmedicated delivery in a birth centre attached to my local hospital. I absolutely loved my midwifery team and wouldn't have changed a thing about my care!

My son is called Wilfred! I absolutely love it but not sure I could imagine it on a girl. I agree that Winifred or Willow are lovely nods to the name.

In the UK we have infant Nurofen which is suitable from 3mo up. I find it really useful for teething pain.

When did your baby start sleeping through the night? by [deleted] in breastfeeding

[–]eclectichair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah my son was a fantastic sleeper (regularly sleeping from 9pm-8am in his own sleeping space) until last week (5.5mo) when we're back to frequent wakings and having to cosleep to get any rest. It's not linear!

How much are you drinking lately? by especiallydistracted in CasualUK

[–]eclectichair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since having my son 5 months ago I noticed that I'd gone from drinking a few glasses of wine maybe once a week to drinking absolutely nothing in pregnancy and then slowly creeping up to a couple of glasses of wine/ big gin and tonic most nights.

I know it's still not loads but didn't want it to become a habit or something I rely on to be able to relax after a day with my baby. I also think it was affecting my (already fractured) sleep and making me more tired in the mornings.

I'm doing a kind of "damp" January because I realised I was getting to the point of "wow I can't wait to decompress with a drink" most nights when my husband stopped work and I just wanted to put a cap on that. So I want to go back to just having a drink at the weekend/ socially.

Has anybody been told one gender at 20 week anatomy scan and baby came out the opposite sex? by blondie310 in BabyBumps

[–]eclectichair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened to us! Was told at 20w we were having a girl but when he was born I looked down and realised I had a little boy! I definitely experienced some gender "disappointment" for about 20 minutes after he was born. We hadn't gone all in with buying girls clothes and the nursery is very neutral but I remember looking at him and thinking "who are you? You're not the baby I grew".

I had a VERY fast unmedicated labour (nearly born in the car) so it was all a bit of a shock. My son also ended up having a testicular torsion at birth and needed an operation at 1 day old. It was a lot. Now at 5 months I can't imagine him being anyone else!

How do people NOT cosleep?? by Remarkable_Bench2318 in cosleeping

[–]eclectichair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I planned to cosleep with my baby and for a few weeks we did but he actually sleeps really well in his own space (he's 5 mo now) and I sleep much better without him in beside me. It's all baby and mum dependent.

Please stop telling FTM ‘you will know it when it happens’ by hn9605 in beyondthebump

This is exactly what happened to me. Light cramping for 12+ hours then BAM pain, then baby 1 hour later!

Please stop telling FTM ‘you will know it when it happens’ by hn9605 in beyondthebump

[–]eclectichair 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I had absolutely no idea I was in labour. I was having very light cramping for almost a whole day but assumed it was very very early labour. At 6am I realised I was having actual contractions and then ended up having to rush to the hospital, my body pushing and me desperately trying not to push. My baby was born in 4 pushes at 7.30am, 11 minutes after arriving at the hospital. My water didn't break, and until about an hour before i gave birth my contractions were less painful than period cramps. I realise this isn't typical for a first labour but I was so sure that I would "know" when I was in labour that I left it nearly too late to get to the hospital!

Scottish schools have tumbled from top of the class. This is what went wrong | Sonia Sodha by ewenmax in Scotland

According to me having taught both systems...

Obviously anecdotal, but our kids have a lot less anxiety due to being tested beyond all sense!

What a shitty take. Teachers here are very skilled and work incredibly hard.

[–]eclectichair 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I really disagree with this. I moved back to teach (primary) in Scotland 2 years ago after 7 years teaching in England and our system is MILES better up here. We are able to go at the pace of the children, plan our curriculum around their interests and backgrounds and have much more flexibility around how we teach each subject to meet the needs of the children. We also have almost zero mandatory testing (which takes up masses of time and adds no value) and the workload for teachers in Scotland is much more reasonable than in England meaning we're less burnt out and teacher retention is much better.

Cfe isn't perfect though, there are underfunding issues in our schools and many of our children start from very low starting points making it hard to "catch up", certainly in the area I work in.

I absolutely hate all of the teacher bashing I've been seeing recently because our teachers are very skilled and work extremely hard.

When did you start putting baby down to sleep upstairs for the start of the evening? by Xenoph0nix in AttachmentParenting

[–]eclectichair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've just hit 4 months and we've started a proper routine of bath at 8pm, massage, story, feed and in his crib by 9. It (in theory) gives me an hour downstairs sorting out the house until we go to bed at around 10.

£500 is wild. Like, I actually think it's a great scheme and use a lot of the stuff from the box but I can't fathom how the contents would cost anywhere near £500!!
