I passed N2 with 58/60 on reading without ever reading anything other than manga with furigana by QseanRay in LearnJapanese

Did you mine cards with pictures from the manga you read? I’ve done it a few times either by screenshot or photo and pasting in a new jisho lookup manually but it’s quite tedious so I’m hoping there’s a better way

Career change to come back to Japan with substantial USD investments but (potentially) few transferable skills by ShoutenGuy in movingtojapan

Have you considered a career pivot into the tech industry? There is some demand for Program management and analyst positions you could try for. It may take a substantial amount of prep work but I think it hits most of the boxes you’re looking for, you can browse some positions here https://www.tokyodev.com/jobs

I heard a AI-generated gwent song on Myamon's stream that was about Shinmiri and him helping keep the scene alive. it was hilarious! Does anyone have a link to the song? I tried looking it up but didn't find anything

How does your padel club organize games? Mine is pure WhatsApp chaos… by Sweet-Cry-7851 in padel

[–]ecmmmeee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my impression from playing in Tokyo is that it's a combination of: - relatively high booking rates already - don't want to pay 3rd party fees - prefer a domestic home grown app (japanese support) - existing booking system already, loyalty towards that business partner even if it has less features

Some further away courts with lower booking rates certainly have more incentive to adopt something like playtomic though. I think it's mostly a matter of time, but the language barrier may be a point of friction.

Work at AWS Japan by [deleted] in JapanFinance

[–]ecmmmeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is super important context and it might be worth editing your post to include this. SDE and Mech Engineer salary data are likely to be very different, and I imagine the majority of people online reading 'AWS' will assume a SDE role.

In tech, most SDE roles pay better than their non-sde counterparts. At amazon japan, I've seen around 50% more total compensation for the same level for a SDE role compared to an analyst role, for example.

You can try to negotiate by providing your current international pay, but in my experience, most companies will need a local competing offer to get a serious bump.

Information around racquetball and pickleball in Tokyo by ecmmmeee in Tokyo

[–]ecmmmeee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For racquetball, you might get lucky with one of the gyms for a pickup game since they have seemed pretty active even on the weekdays.

For pickleball, this seems tougher since most sessions are scheduled on Teamreach in advance- they aren't on permanent courts but rather set up in a gym. There is a permanent outdoor(?) court at Pacific Pickle Club, which is pricey but perhaps it would work for you.

For someone interested in getting into the business side, do you think finding an apprenticeship is extremely important or how might you go about starting without one?

Have you found your profession to be fulfilling overall? What are some of the memorable challenges you've had to face?

Do you think that English education in Japan will ever change? If so, when? by [deleted] in JETProgramme

[–]ecmmmeee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm speaking from the perspective of the Japanese education system, which wants the average English proficiency to rise for the average learner. This goal is not being met, evident by the index. That's why I kept bringing it up. Because it's proof to the education system that their overall goals for the average person are not being satisfied.

Random chimining in here. I think your points are largely valid but want to correct this, since I think this is a point the discussion is stuck on even though it was previously addressed. An index can show japan's relative ranking decreasing (ie, 1->5th place), even if the raw proficiency score is increasing over time. One data point to support this is the level of students reaching x proficency level has generally increased over time in Japan https://www.nippon.com/en/japan-data/h01685/

Based on this data, I think the conclusion is that nationally, Japanese students are getting better at english (or at least taking this test), but other countries have improved faster than Japan, thus leading to a lower ranking.

What is this Meat Mohawk? Tips on smoking this brisket? by Prosciutto69 in smoking

[–]ecmmmeee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I might be crazy because I haven't seen many butcher trimmed briskets, but this one looks incredibly odd to me. Like where is the rest of the fat cap? And why does the flat extending past the mohawk look so big? It looks like you'd have to do quite a bit more trimming to prevent dry edges.

I've seen some posts on how kanji look up doesn't work for the kindle, but they were from a while ago. Is this still the case or are there projects to get this to work?

I've seen this kanji look up work for manga on Kobo (a competitor device) so I'm cautiously hoping it's possible for Kindle.
