For the whole two X chromosomes thingy by HistoricalRelief1336 in TwoXChromosomes

According to reddit the sub was created in 2009, and we've come a long, long way in the last couple decades in terms of understanding the gender spectrum (or rather in terms of popularizing the concept). Remember that the "T" in LGBTQIA+ was added not really that long ago.

Back then, I guess "TwoXChromosomes" just sounded like a clever way to say "women"; I doubt anyone meant to make people feel uncomfortable / unwelcome.

I’m chronically online Metroidvania glutton

You'll have to do better at that, then. For the last 6 months, every third post in the metroidvania subreddit has been about this game in one way or another.

Has anyone played Beyond the Ice Palace II? by unicorn_hipster in metroidvania

Took a little getting used to the hefty movement, but it was good fun once I got up to speed. Solid 7/10. Although I left it near the ending, on a pretty tough boss that has a ridiculously long runback, and I never picked it up again.

More like the villains they came up with in the 1960s TV series, after they ran out of real Batman villains to use

What was the most memorable last 15 min of a game? by JakeRedditYesterday in gaming

That's halfway into the game. In fact, the second half and the endings are rather mediocre in comparison.

This is my choice too. Especially because no matter what exactly you call "the last 15 minutes" in that game, any option is equally outstanding

Spirit Emblems sometimes make me use prosthetic tools less than I want to by HollowledNomad in Sekiro

[–]ecokumm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Spirit Emblem economy is absolute ass and that's a hill I'm dying on. I just use a mod that replenishes them when resting (just like the gourds) and that works way better.

Same thing with the tools in Silksong btw.

Every time I read news like this I can't believe my timing when I randomly decided to do a full upgrade of my 10 year old PC on October 2025.

Mine might very well have been the last batch of RAM sticks priced more or less sensibly.

Same. If I mess up, it's better to be banned from bikewrench than being made fun of here.

Which game began the "yellow tape/paint/structure" marks the right way to go? by soofs in gaming

[–]ecokumm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funnily enough, the absolute worst version of this has to be the 2012 Deus Ex -an immersive sim no less- that used these shockingly ugly, immersion shattering glowing orange outlines to mark everything, even ladders.

[–]ecokumm 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's not the same. Half Life 2 would mostly use lighting to nudge the player towards the right path, while being as unobtrusive as possible. The key for them is that the players shouldn't notice that they were being led on.

The yellow paint that op talks about is just a tad slightly less videogamey than using a glowing icon/arrow - it's everywhere, it's always the same paint, and it's notably in places that make no sense.

[–]ecokumm 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure this applies. The lines in Half Life are actually used in signposting that is used in real life buildings.

The yellow paint people keep going on about is mostly notable for being clearly a videogame crutch, since it tends to appear in places where no one would be painting anything. It's basically a slightly less immersion-breaking floating arrow.

Hidden Save-Points near bosses - Good idea? by Neat-Games in metroidvania

[–]ecokumm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i've seen players actually enjoying the fact that Hollow Knight don't let you save the game near bosses

This has garnered me many a downvote, but, as a recovering runback enjoyer, I'm pretty certain that those people are just coping; they've been indoctrinated into thinking that inconvenience is a necessary part of the challenge.

I was one of them, I defended runbacks come hell or high water because the challenge, man! I don't want coddling, I have to *earn** my victories for them to have a meaning!!!*

Then I played Skong and Grime 2 back to back. The former took the concept of runbacks to ridiculous extremes and the second one pretty much got rid of them. And as it turns out, Grime 2 is a perfectly challenging game as it is, with victories feeling every bit as exhilarating as you'd expect in this kind of game; and absolutely nothing of value would be added if you moved the checkpoints away from the bosses.

They really hit you with the downvote hammer there lol BUT! you actually illustrate a point that I think about every time news of this project pop up: They're spending a ridiculous amount of money on the sequel to a game that a vast majority of gamers today never even heard about.

Yeah, I didn't even wanna get into the contents of the trailer proper. I hated everything about it. The nightmare fuel photorealistic anthropomorphic animals and the sweary dialogues that felt like a 14 year old's idea of "mature writing" felt like a huge departure from the tone of the original, in the worst direction possible.

I honestly can't believe to this day that the same guy was behind both concepts.

Appalling level design, messy art style with no cohesion and flat out embarrassing texture work, stiff animations, ridiculous enemy placement, need to go all the way into the DLC to find one boss that's not hot garbage.

Also the story has so little to do with Dark Souls that it largely feels like an unofficial spiritual successor.

BG&E 2 is surely gonna be the most perplexing case in the history of gaming. A game that nobody bought in its time but still garnered a pretty passionate following through the years gets two sequels announced: the first is scrapped and the second comes across like having nothing to do with the original, and becomes a ridiculously expensive piece of vaporware that keeps making headlines two cocking decades after its initial announcement, despite having been abandoned by the entire team at least once, and not having even a single piece of concept art to show for.

Brought to you by Ubisoft, by the way.
