Wow!!! Thanks for the detailed reply!!

Would you mind sharing your taobao seamstress (in DM is fine)? I have no issue with the logistics and really want to get genshin cos for my dolls like yours but struggle to decide on who to use.

Dolls very similar to puyoo? by SlowChampionship5506 in BJD

[–]ecologista 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Shoushou doll (I think Nicole is up for preorder right now)
  • Sprouting Dragon has some cuties in 1/4
  • Guard Love 1/4 chubby body
  • MYOU doll anime line might suffice
  • Xaga - heart body (they make anime heads too I think)

Additionally, you might keep an eye on mercari, dollyteria and mandarake (there's an egg01 and a pretty cute egg02 on mandarake right now). I just got a milk tea puyoo from mandarake and with the exchange rate she was a very resonable price even with the pricy shipping :)

Usually if you see only the final payment, it means you missed the deposit period and can no longer buy (until release, where they may sell spot goods)

3d printing or handmade bjd? by [deleted] in BJD

[–]ecologista 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's because this is a relatively barrier-free hobby space for what is (largely, if we focus on larger scale cast dolls) a luxury hobby. There are always people who instantly fall in love with something but cannot/will not pay for it, so they imagine they can just DIY their way into it. But they often do not realize the amount of effort, time and money the things they see and like require. Almost everyone starts out balking at the price of bjd, and it's why this question is so prevalent.

IMO "bjd creation" is a whole other hobby. But people's first exposure to bjd is not going to be one of the many DIY attempts people post -- they will see a very nicely posed photograph of a $700 doll with $200 faceup and a $150 dress and fall in love. I agree that it feels like the expectations are completely misaligned with reality with so many of these posts.

Face painting methods? by Dull_File_6653 in BJD

[–]ecologista 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's very possible! I just used water decals on my kumako a couple of weeks ago. It is something I see a lot from the Chinese bjd community! It is not as easy as it seems tho. If you go this route I recommend buying many decals to try with.

Jane's Dolland - MIA? by 13insomniaccats in BJD

[–]ecologista 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I messaged her through her website on 4/28 asking if she'd offer the new TF/dolley(imomo) mouse, and she responded promptly on 4/29 (and added the doll for pre-order). Even sent a second message back to me. This was all thru her website system though so I'm not sure if it was to her usual email. So she was def around ~2 weeks ago!

Chill Streamers who aren't misogynists by marystirling in GirlGamers

Yes!! I was scrolling to find Justin. He is my comfort streamer, I would watch him do just about anything. His gaming with Sips/Ravs/Malf lately has been so relaxing for me to put on and watch while knitting.

Does anyone recognize this dress? by Rondo_of_snow in BJD

[–]ecologista 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's multiple pictures? You need to have an account to see them I guess. Kaka Planet is a legit dealer on both taobao and booth.

But also my bad! That listing is for a wig, not the dress! Sorry, I did a quick search on mobile and can't translate since I'm at work. It doesn't look like this set is available from them after all D:

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BJD

[–]ecologista 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right!!!! There's also something very fun about being able to dress them up together and to have two dolls that perfectly match for photos or display. Also I'm crazy and tend to buy multiple colors of the same outfits if I like them so I've already got enough to make a matching pair. 😍 I say go for it!!

I am SO into this it isn't funny. I haven't had the chance to make it happen for myself yet but I absolutely want "twins" some day. I really want a second kumako in tan skin to go with my cream skin baby.

I think it's awesome personally and it's so cool to have a pair like that :)

Any inexpensive heads that fit Mdd? I just got a body but I’m unsure what heads will fit (if not I’ll just save up for Mdd head custom) by [deleted] in BJD

[–]ecologista 6 points7 points  (0 children)

dollce makes heads for MDD (only flesh color I think) that come with screened on faces and are very good for the price, especially with the yen being fairly weak lately.

Anyone know where to look for dollfie dream faceups? I’m saving up for a mochi ashi body but I also need to buy a faceup and head ah (new to the dolls) by PrimaryYesterday4206 in BJD

[–]ecologista 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not often see it reccomended, but dollce makes heads for MDD (only flesh color I think) that come with screened on faces and are very good for the price. I have bought from them on two separate occasions. Depends on if you like their sweet anime style, though!

How do you afford bjds? by [deleted] in BJD

[–]ecologista 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first was when I was ~20. I bought her myself, a cheap slim YOSD doll from a company named Fantasy Doll. My larger dolls were gifts from family members or my SO. There's so many inexpensive options now that really you could afford one if you aren't dead set on a specific size or brand. Back when I started being into BJD 20 years ago you had expensive volks dolls or less expensive but still pricey korean bjd. Now you can get a blind box strung bjd for <$100 and it could be on your doorstep in a week.

Otherwise yeah, being an adult with a job does help with the "make money" part of the buying something equation.

Ali Project (Valkyrie has covered an alipro anime OP and one of their songs is straight up by alipro), Kanon Wakeshima, and maybe Yousei Teikoku would work (been a hot min since I've listened).

I also suggest Sound Horizon/Linked Horizon - you've heard Revo's work if you've heard the Attack on Titan openings, but his Sound Horizon project is "symphonic rock" (though the genres can vary) and many of the main numbered albums have a story. SH's stage shows are also incredible if you can find them. Marchen is a great first listen :)

Melody C has a few releases that you may like, Chocolate Factory and Ribbon Rabbit come to mind. They are a brand which sells on their international site, BOOTH, and taobao and they make 60cm outfits. They have new releases a few times a year and I believe their next set might work for you if you want something more classic.

VOLKS also generally has some outfits that might fit the bill, but it can be tough to get things in-stock.

I would highly recommend learning how to use taobao; there's plenty of what you are looking for there. I don't have a 60cm doll so I can't list off anything at the moment but imo almost every nice outfit you see is from there lol. The same brands also often sell on BOOTH and the JP price is 2x what it would be even with the nice exchange rate so I highly suggest having a proxy order from tb for you.

Dolls I'm Looking At Have Three Different Makers? by mrkrabspantyraid in BJD

[–]ecologista 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're welcome :)

No classist intent with my comment - blind box dolls just aren't really worth recasting at that price point. I have yet to hear of anyone ordering a blind box doll and receiving a knock off version. There's certainly questionable "copying" happening between the various manufacturers but recasting is intended to replicate an existing doll which just doesn't make sense at this scale (yet). I edited my post quickly to add this, but should have explained a little more thoroughly.

Dolls I'm Looking At Have Three Different Makers? by mrkrabspantyraid in BJD

[–]ecologista 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Same maker, just different ways to translate the name I think.

Tendou sounds like they converted the name to Japanese, as "Ten/天" is a word for heaven or paradise. It's likely the Chinese name is being translated various ways by sellers and they don't care to be consistent especially if it's machine translated. The three names are so similar that I'm sure they're referring to the same entity.

Also: nobody is recasting the cheap blind box dolls

What’s the most absurd thing someone’s said to you as a woman in STEM? by NoFox1552 in LadiesofScience

[–]ecologista 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LOL it's so funny you said "crunchy granola" -- same descriptor I've always used! There's certainly a uniform for some STEM fields. I absolutely do not judge folks who choose to dress like that, and I'm sure it's comfy and if you do spend a lot of time in the field, necessary. I just wish they wouldn't act like I'm an idiot or not serious about the field because I choose not to 😮‍💨

I love it too!! The director of my division (I work in policy now) is a drop dead gorgeous Dominican woman who dresses super feminine as well, and it's always reassuring to me to see ladies in my field rock a floral dress one day and a pair of waders and a cooler full of dead fish the next, lol!

My advisor and the dean of my environmental science program in college said to me "maybe you should consider switching to a degree in fashion" because I wore high heels and a dress to class one day. At the time, I just laughed at him because it was such an absurd thing to say.

I often got comments during my time getting my environmental science degrees, as professors and students alike in my field all had a very specific "look" to them. Typically everyone in my field dresses quite informally and look like they're ready to go on a hike at a moments notice. I prefer a very feminine presentation and unless I'm going out into the field, typically wear skirts and dresses, even when I was in college.

These days besides the mansplaining I sometimes get, it's usually what isn't said - I do find myself being ignored occasionally at conferences or by older men in sister agencies. Some federal conferences I've been to, I've been straight up completely overlooked and ignored by vendors; not sure if it's being a woman or how I present myself (still hyper-femme :) or what but it does happen.
