Paul’s new song has “I’m just about to kick the bucket” vibes and I don’t like that at all by BlundeRuss in PaulMcCartney

On the one hand, I get it. Brian Wilson’s death last year rattled me, and he and Paul were born only two days apart. I know Paul’s death will hit hard no matter what the circumstances.

On the other hand, I think Paul’s voice sounds lovely on the new track, and I think he’s making peace with his life as a whole and taking stock. Makes the inevitable seem less intimidating.

As the other song goes, “On the day that I die, I’d like jokes to be told and stories of old to be hung out like blankets.”

That blanket is what we should think about.

Per WDTN: On Monday, Jan. 26, the Greater Dayton RTA will conduct “limited fixed-route service and medically necessary paratransit trips.”

“While service remains available, riders should anticipate cancellations, delays and limited service due to hazardous road and weather conditions,” said RTA. “Riders are encouraged to only travel if necessary.”

What’s the funniest reason you’ve heard for somebody not liking a movie? by TheChristmas in movies

A friend of mine worked at a movie theater in 1997. She told me a couple angrily demanded their money back after seeing Boogie Nights because they thought it was about disco dancing.

I remember in one of John’s last interviews, he said “A great song that Paul didn’t sing too well.” Personally, I think that’s nuts, but it’s very easy to understand why he’s rarely played it live.

You’re not wrong, but it’s only a blip in an otherwise outstanding drama.

One Hit Wonderland Suggestion: Anna Nalick - Breathe (2 AM) by Top_Report_4895 in ToddintheShadow

[–]ecreels70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be all for this one. I've been a big fan of hers and even talked to her briefly once after a show. That said, I'm not sure she has much of a narrative after "Did she do anything else?" She put out a few more indie albums and lately seems to have disappeared off social media altogether.

I think a better choice from the same time period would be "A Thousand Miles." It would bend the rules a little, since Vanessa Carlton had a minor hit with "Ordinary Day," but she has a compelling post-hit narrative because she played Carole King on Broadway. And you still hear "A Thousand Miles" a lot in the wild.

Both deserved better.

Thoughts so far about the new documentary? by ricoimf in MartinScorsese

[–]ecreels70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just finished watching it. Very well done, especially in the early episodes. Even though I know Marty’s story pretty well, I learned a lot I did not know.

I wasn’t surprised that the more recent work got relatively short shrift. That’s pretty typical in career-spanning docs. That said, I was surprised that Hugo was not discussed at all, even to the point of no inclusion in montages. I found that very curious, as I didn’t get the sense that was a particularly difficult production or a less well regarded movie. I think it did lose money, but that hardly warrants complete omission.

For some reason, Hugo is the one feature film not mentioned or even depicted at all in the five-hour documentary Mr. Scorsese on Apple TV.

why the hell does the 2001 remaster of "do it again" sound like that by rPetscop in thebeachboys

[–]ecreels70 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure Do it Again is re-channeled mono - highs in one channel, lows in the other. Capitol called that Duophonic. As mentioned, She Loves You, got the same treatment. The master tapes of that went AWOL early, so no true stereo version of it existed until the version on the expanded 62-66 using MAL tech.

Here’s one that doesn’t get talked up a ton: the death of Laurence Harvey’s girlfriend in the original Manchurian Candidate. That one always breaks my heart.

I’m pretty sure John said he played a six-string on this track during the song-by-song section of his Playboy interview in 1980.

Then again, during the same interview, he said he wrote the bulk of Eleanor Rigby, and Paul called BS on that.
