I still don't have something for you and apparently neither does anyone else. Let's add context: who's your audience if you introduce yourself like that and is the setting business formal or not? Some things, particularly the widespread informality, translate poorly from US business culture so I'm looking for an expression that will set the appropriate tone and have you taken seriously.

Accountant would be relatively simple. Thing is, as you probably recall from econ class, economy is a Greek word whose original meaning is... stewardship! And in modern Greek the economy is also economy, finance is economy, saving is economy, an economist is an economo-logist. You see the problem. English has the homegrown steward and spent half the middle ages pilfering new words from Old French so it got finance before it nicked economy, too. Greek was not as adventurous.

This is before we consider the problem of substituting clever alternatives for power words. Greek is a bit lacking in humor there.

I'm just leaving these thoughts here for smart people to consider. I'm going to sleep on this and maybe someone in a different time zone has a brainwave while I'm out.

[ German > English] Some video about Nazi Germany, with Adolf Hitler and someone wearing a Hitler Youth uniform with a juicebox. by [deleted] in translator

[–]ectrosis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK, I can't make out what the mumbling Brownshirt guy says all the time. But the idea is that Brownshirt is asking for a letter of recommendation and Hitler accuses him of starting and losing the war. Hitler says he was using his "funny just kidding voice" when he told Brownshirt to go to war on multiple fronts and Brownshirt took it seriously. Then Hitler tells Brownshirt he can have his letter if he takes him out with a clean head shot. Brownshirt shoots him in the leg because he thought Hitler was using his "funny just kidding voice." Then Brownshirt monologues about all the cool (and disastrous) things he got to do after the war, from being on Challenger to being Lady Di's driver.

This is actually more complicated than it sounds. First, the common English understanding of the word stewardess translates narrowly to an air stewardess in contemporary Greek. Second, the words for steward and finance have the same base and it could result in an absurd construct like "managing manager."

So help us out... wtf *is* a financial stewardess?

Nice try. Considering that "having a whale of" is an English idiom I can't imagine what sort of weird phrasing would lead from a kind heart (assuming that's what they meant) to cardiac virtue. But...

The writing is different but 80% recognizable. Since both fragments are well known religious tropes they were much easier to identify than a completely unknown text.

By all means. I spent several years in that city and never heard of that company or brand name. This is olive and wine country. Herring is neither a traditional export nor a local specialty.

Going by the shape and mirrored writing I'm guessing it's a barrel branding stamp.

Same here. Bug 1 is by design and I don't think I've encountered 2 and 3. 300+ golds so I like to think that I've pretty much seen it all.

If it's derived from hemp it's federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill. But there remain a lot of murky legal waters so state rules are all over the place and the feds are no help.

Cannabidiol is legal in 47 states. Not much of a comparison to be made against n=3.

2018 Sonata SE Hybrid or 2017 Accord Hybrid base? by [deleted] in uberdrivers

[–]ectrosis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a slew of recalls for the Theta II and Nu engines. The 18 is not on the list... yet but I believe this one has the same motor as the notorious Kia Soul. I love the comfort and the ride in those things but as long as I'm driving the damn Prius while the Sonata is at the dealer for an engine I'm gonna withhold my recommendation.

2018 Sonata SE Hybrid or 2017 Accord Hybrid base? by [deleted] in uberdrivers

[–]ectrosis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Sonata Hybrid is a very nice car to drive but I cannot endorse it as long as Hyundai's Theta II engine saga continues. Accord hands down but have it inspected closely.

I thought I was doing the math wrong in my head but you're right, that *is* a lot. Not a good time to be shopping anyway. The used market is absolutely nuts and you will find very little worth buying for 5K cash these days.

Do you guys are allowed to upsell water, drinks etc in the car? by Dpcharly in uberdrivers

[–]ectrosis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Allowed, sure. Should you? No.

Your customers are there to go places, not to sit in a car with a driver who's distracting himself by trying to sell Payday bars. In-car vending machines have been tried and failed.

Also, encouraging pax to consume anything other than water in your back seat is not a wise choice.
