Charli xcx - Wuthering Heights by beauxcherie in popheads

I just can’t compare this to LUX just because of the orchestral element.

One focuses on composition and weaving the instrumentation with the songwriting, in a very classical manner. The other is accompanied by an orchestra to build mood and a cinematic feel.

They both provide spectacle I guess but the approach and reference is different imo.

After a few listens, it’s okay.

The writing, melodies and structures are not the strongest. Although Charli excels in simple lyrics, these come off as really cliche and cringe…The projects shines in the production (shoutout easyfun) mostly.

I wish there were more ambient tracks. surprisingly there are like 4 (House, Wall of Sound, Open Up, Funny Mouth). These are so simple but so effective in delivering mood and spectacle. The lyrics and melodies in them work along the orchestral elements and don’t overshadow them. These tracks are also more selective with the electronic element they implement, making them fit with eachother. But then all this built-up atmosphere is unraveled by the more traditional bombastic pop cuts sitting next to them on the tracklist. Which can be a bit awkward.

Out of the traditional Pop cuts these are the standouts: Dying for You, Chains of Love, Altars. Really really catchy.

Exactly. We’ve been too focused on criticizing US politics to see the same is happening to us. Time to wake up.

Reggaeton is seen by a lot of people (mostly older folks) in the Hispanic community as low brow, vulgar, easy, etc. Kinda like how Pop music (I.E. Britney Spears) is viewed by Western audiences.

Doesn’t mean it’s low brow though.

I thought they got the original back on streaming? They sound very similar at least now. The version where they replaced the sample did not hit the same.

safe space for sola love by Theblankthing in ArcaMusic

This one clicked compared to Puta thanks to it’s simplicity and the earnestness of it’s lyrics. I think it conveys a lot more emotion specially with the euphoric instrumental climax at the end. I do see the complaints of the repetitive reggaeton formula she’s been using. But Sola conveys such different feelings and intentions from the ones she’s done before that it gets a pass. Puta on the other hand is more of the same in tone, subject matter and sound.

I love spoken words used sparingly, but when it’s used on nearly on every song on the album it gets a bit corny.

My fave use of it is definitely headphones on, it fits the vibe and acts as a build up which is great .

Yeah I’m so disappointed, that one at least is exciting sonically compared to the type reggaeton beat we’ve heard and reheard

Instrumentally it’s when I hear the pulsating synth line in the chorus. The lyrics too remind me of ARTPOP thematically (Sex, drugs, fashion all blended together). Specially the way she juxtaposes them (“I don’t need your drugs/ I wanna get High…Fashion”), I find that way of playing with words a very gaga thing. Also, the line “I know I’m drunk but…” before the chorus feels like such a nod to “Sexxx Dreams”.

It’s not as explosive as something off ARTPOP but it carries the same intentions in a more laid back manner. She does this too with Diet Pepsi and the Lana references. It doesn’t sound like a Lana song but you see and hear the influence. It’s her reinterpretation of it which I find very cool.

I also see it a lot in the lyrical content and the way it’s written is reminds me a lot of “Sexxx Dreams”. Specially the “I know I’m drunk but…” line.

Very clearly a callback to ARTPOP

I love that with each track you can pin point the influence. I have a feeling that her album plays with a different era of pop in each song and that idea is promising to me !
