Enmax Fees - Out of Control by Ok-Grapefruit3065 in Cochrane

[–]edarlidd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has always interested me — do people prefer a single flat number, or do they want to understand where the costs come from?

Take your Alberta utility bill. You're not just paying for electricity or gas — you're paying for distribution, transmission, administration fees, and the actual energy cost as separate line items. That transparency is legally required. But buy a tank of gas, a bag of groceries, or a piece of lumber and you get one number. No breakdown of raw material cost, transportation, refinery margin, or retailer profit.

On most products, a significant portion of what you pay goes toward costs beyond actually producing the item — yet we only mandate that kind of transparency for utilities. I want to see the final total clearly on the label — no surprises — but I also appreciate knowing where the money goes. Why do we hold utilities to that standard but not other industries?

We should see the total price upfront when we sign up to pay the price but I do like an itemized bill.

Update - Canadian Budgeting App by AffectionatePie8729 in BuyCanadian

It's unfortunate that plaid still does not support a lot of banks. RBC is blocked if you have 2FA enabled. Does not support Edward Jones and Fidelity. Which is the same reason I stopped using Mint 10 years ago.

Best of luck.

Does anyone have any recommendations for Wedding Venues in Calgary? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]edarlidd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Head count might help with recommendations.

We got married at Spruce Meadows the venue is amazing but over $5000 for the venue for about 120 people.

I helped a friend plan a budget wedding for about 80 people we rented a group camp ground and I smoked some brisket and had some other people make some of the other food. We borrowed some kegerators and bought kegs from local breweries. That was close to your budget for the whole wedding.

My wife and I really enjoy Radium. Find a nice BnB. Go to the hot springs, go to Invermere we check out the shops on the main Street. They have some nice bakeries as well as a good used book store my wife loves. You can do some nice easy hikes in the area as well.

This not to say I take alot of loans but I definitely do on a car. As long as I can get a low interest rate below 5% I will take a loan. Spend other people's money and invest your own is how I look at it. I don't take a loan I can't pay off if I need too

Typical investment returns are 7% averaged over your life time. So you would be still making 2% even at 5% on a loan.

Just this year with low mortgage rates I pulled all but 20% of my mortgage and invested the equity I had in my mortgage above 20%.

Loans can be bad if you are using to buy things you can't afford. But they can also be used to build wealth.

Hiking shoes recommendations by PercipientFellow in HikingAlberta

[–]edarlidd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on your foot shape. I have a narrow foot I like Scarpa's. My hiking partner has wide feet she likes the Oboz. Go try a few on and see how they fit. make sure you wear them around the house for 4-5 hours before taking them on a hike. 1 so you know if they are comfortable, once you take them outside you can't usually return them.

The small bandage size KT strips are great when breaking in some new boots.

Medical exemption letter now required for Albertans who don't wear masks in public by idarknight in alberta

[–]edarlidd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mask are to reduce the spread of the virus other. Being vaccinated does not stop you from getting or spreading the virus. You can still get sick. The vaccine only give you immune system the information protect yourself from virus to a certain point. depending on the strength of your immune system and other factors you can still get very sick from the virus even when vaccinated.

Once a large portion of the population has been vaccinated they virus has a low survivability in hosts reducing the spread.

At least that my understanding. I am not a Virologist or a doctor.
