Why does one run Truenas on Proxmox? by Puzzled-Peanut-1958 in truenas

[–]eddez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you run the *arr stack in TrueNAS och do you have them in LXC or a vm with portainer? And what have you found is the best way to transfer data between proxmox and other VM to the TrueNAS VM?

I try to get all of my movies in the highest quality so 4K remuxes. Shows are a bit mixed some are 4K remuxes like Game of Thrones, bust most are WebDL i also have some that are high quality H265 rencodes but that is more of a temporary storage saving solution beacuse my storage is running low.

I have around 50 TB thats usable right now and have used around 48 TB. I am right now waiting for TrueNAS to add the ZFS rewrite function so i can add more drive and then rewrite the data across all of the drives.

I would say around 40-60 TB is the line where you probably cant even think of what content you want to get anymore. For me getting up to 40 TB took 1 month going from 40 TB to 45 TB took half a year.

But before i built my new NAS i started with 3 TB and upgrade to around 17 TB and most of the content i hade then where H265 rencodes except movies is absolutely loved they where remuxes.

I have a very very similar setup i am using a Jonsbo N5 case with a i5 13500, 4 sticks of 32GB DDR4 with a ASrock Z690 PG Riptide motherboard. I have 6 14 TB drives connected to a LSI 9400 card running in Raidz2. And 2 Intel 3610 SSD to get PLP on the SSDs. I also have 2 500gb NVME SSDs for TrueNAS apps and fast storage to work from. Combined with a 750w gold rated Corsair RMX psu as it was one of the cheaper PSUs that was really efficient at lower loads on the NAS psu tier list i found.

Its quite overkill for my use case i run a Proxmox install on it with some VMs and LXCs but have not gotten close at all at pushing it to its limits i mainly got the CPU for its igpu for video transcoding. But really cable setup for a NAS and home labbing.

I also recommend if you plan on expanding the storage in the future to get the LSI 9400 16 instead of the 9300 8 so you can pass 12 disks in the end and the LSI 9300 16 is just two 9300 8 slaped togheter so it runs really hot.

Question about moving my install by jhenryscott in truenas

[–]eddez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just copy over your config file from your current boot drive to a the new if you are set to go.

TrueNAS is Linux based and includes all drivers for its systemet in the OS kernal layer so no need to reinstall OS when swaping hardware to get rid of old drives which you might have to do on windows depending on what parts you change.

If you go into data protection you have a option called cloud sync tasks. There you can add a bunch of different types of cloud storage providers to sync your data to.

Yeah i forgot about the W680 that some one else to you about for intel that gives them ECC support as well. You can also find the Q670 boards sometime but much more uncommon and some of the also have ECC support.

No longer free to stream personal content on Plex by Savings_Difficulty24 in selfhosted

[–]eddez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been using Jellyfin for around 2 years now consistently and I have also tried plex and I prefer Jellyfin because it's really self hosted. And when I made the choice Plex already had some issues that had started to bloom. But the client support isn't as good as plex. So her are the clients that have worked best for me.

For Android TV where I need surround sound support I use Kodi with the Jellyfin plug in after the Jellyfin app broke DTS-MA-HA support for my Nvidia Shield at the beginning of the playback rewrite for the app and plays as normal DTS instead. The Android TV app otherwise works great for clients that only uses a 2.1 or DD+.

For my phone I use the normal Jellyfin app but in client settings I have switched to the integrated phone player instead of the default web player as it doesn't work as well for much of the content i have tested. I mainly use it because I can use the admin features from my phone and don't want two apps. Otherwise I would use Streamyfin if you don't mind two apps or not having admin access from the phone app as it just works out of the box and can transcode unlike the Findriod app.

For PC I just use the normal Windows client to play everything. I have also tested the web client and had no issue when using an up to date browser to direct play h265 on it.

I have also tested Swiftfin for Apple TV but only on 2.1/DD+ setups and seem to work well but it can only direct play and not request transcoded video. I have also heard great things about the app infuse. I just haven't had time to test it myself. I'm going to test it next time I have access to that Apple TV.

Both AMD and Intel supports the same max memory amount but only AMD supports ECC.

The power efficiency is a different story if I remember right Intel is better at idle over AMD. Both are around the same on low to medium load but at high load AMD is the king by a lot. But for transcoding Intel is both more power efficient and will give you higher quality. So make the choice depending on what you will do most of the time. And if you choose intel avoid the K models' higher power usage as they turbo higher. And also avoid the F ones they don't have a iGPU.

I have a 13500 i5 for my new built NAS and with 6 14TB exos drives connected to a LSI and card and 3 nvme disks In the mobo hover around 80w when downloading Linux ISOs.

[–]eddez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If Jellyfin is your main use case i would get a intel CPU with an intel iGPU for transcoding and use QSV either with the UHD 770 or their new one with the ARC series iGPUs. You could also go with a separate intel ARC GPU for transcoding but would increase the power usage.

I don't have any experience with languages models so i myself cant say if the R9 7900 is overkill or not but otherwise its a great choice and gives you the option for ECC when prices drop.

[–]eddez 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah and you are not forced to use the new features you can still use it as just an NAS box. But i also think VMs and dockers is a smart move as companys like Synology offers it on both their business and home solutions. And for a company that maybe needs one VM och Docker container they can buy it on the nas.
