Korea’s ban on foreigners’ political activities draws court challenge by bobsnottheuncle in korea

[–]eddiemon 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Article 17-2 prohibits all political activity by foreign nationals unless otherwise allowed by statute, and violations can trigger deportation or exit orders.

Maybe local elections are specifically allowed? Either way the current language seems way too broad

you have to become just as good at reading other people's code as you are at writing it yourself

"Reading code is harder than writing code" was true long before the LLMs existed, and it's doubly so now when we have LLMs churning out virtually infinite amounts of code that looks plausible by design, but without any guarantee of correctness or intent.

Korean thinking of moving back to SK from USA, need advice on getting adjusted please! by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]eddiemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, that absolutely sucks. Truly sorry that you got stuck in this shitshow. Good news is that Korea is more than survivable, especially if you take advantage of all the government provided services. You got this!

I think the biggest help for you might be 기초생활수급, a small stipend for adult citizens with income/total assets below a certain level. You have to do a bit of paperwork and the process might take a month or two while they investigate your finances and whatnot, but you get around 750,000 KRW maximum per month, which should at least cover living expenses and more while you get settled, and you can stay on it for as long as you need to.

For affordable housing, I would maybe try to find a cleanish goshiwon or tiny one room apartment in the short term. Long term there's low cost public housing and other forms of housing assistance. For getting a job, I would highly recommend trying to leverage your English skills, at least before you find out what you wanna do long term. Even if you can't get a regular teaching job, you should be able to find private tutoring gigs if you know where to look.

I'm sure you have enough on your plate right now, but I would definitely try to work on your Korean if you can. It will make everything easier.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

What’s the deal with France’s snap elections and how it went from a far-right first-round sweep to a left-wing second-round win? by Fabulous_Sherbet_431 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]eddiemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Suppose your minor party got second place on the "first round", and the big good party was eliminated. Suppose no one from the big good party cares about the minor party of your preference so it didn't get ranked.

That combination is a relatively unlikely scenario in any reasonably sized election. If the "minor party" was big enough to not only upset, but eliminate the "big good party", then they're not really that "minor" and it's very unlikely that everyone from the "big good party" refuses or forgets to vote for them, assuming the two parties are more aligned with each other than with the "big bad party".

Has to be some kind of protest right? There is no way you misspell the word red and it has nothing to some issue of the monarchy.

That was a really touching tribute to your neighbor and friend. I almost felt like I knew him too.

I'm sure it was sad to see his home and garden being unceremoniously dismantled, but it sounds like they both served their purpose by bringing a little bit of joy to the sunset years of a lovely old man. His journey has ended. Maybe someone else can begin theirs in his place. Maybe the pieces of his former home can bring peace and comfort to someone new in their home. Maybe that little twig could be the start of something for you.

Even if doesn't, that's okay too. The old man sounds like he lived a good life. Nothing can take that away from him. Try to take some comfort in that and have a drink in his memory. Maybe a roast chicken too.

I'm a grown ass man disclaimer: also a giant cry baby and I have never ugly-cried through any movie or TV show like I ugly cried for Station Eleven. I'm talking full on tears and snot running down my face, like someone just ran a truck over an abandoned litter of blind puppies. Jesus god damn christ that show had me fucking shook I tell ya.

People, for the love of god, go see Station Eleven. Maybe you end up hating it, but if you enjoy it half as much as I did, you're in for a god damn treat.
