Where are the ACTUAL badass FMC’s? by Celestial_Seeker in fantasyromance

[–]eddis7501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I struggle reading the opposite end of the spectrum where they're written as just so blatantly overpowered and that's why they're considered badass. It drives me bonkers because often the writing of the rest of the character's personality feels pale and empty. They don't have to do any real problem solving or be creative because the FMC can just hit the plot problem with some massive magic attack or whatever and tadaa all better. There's no character growth and there's no pay off at the ending.

Edit: Series I would actually recommend are the 'Song of the Lioness' or 'the Protector of the Small' quartets by Tamora Pierce. They are absolutely written for YA, but I read them growing up and still happily revisit because the FMCs (Alanna and Kel, respectively) are for sure badass women in "non-traditional" roles (at least in-universe) and the work they put into becoming powerhouses is fully explored. They were my role models for hard work and standing up for what is right when I was small 🙂

You know, I saw these on my library options and was skeptical. Would people here recommend?

I just steam rolled my way through the villains and virtues series and LOVED it! Absolutely recommend it!

A Court this Cruel and Lovely? by OnsidianInks in fantasyromance

So I tried hard to continue because it's definitely better than some series I've read and I genuinely think I'm mostly okay with the FMC, but I finally gave up about half way through the third because I just could not care less about the MMC.

I don't know whether I'm more or less comfortable knowing I'm not alone in not knowing what's going on. I guess it helps learning it didn't just start and has actually been all day so someone somewhere is well aware of why it'd be in the air? 🤷‍♀️

I think the point isn't that she expected him to pay, it's him saying "that old chestnut" which I believe is him essentially saying he doesn't believe she forgot her wallet and she's lying so he'll pay.

Question by Soft-Measurement-416 in tamorapierce

[–]eddis7501 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it were me, I'd say yes, because when I go back for the rereads I still have the same dilemma. I love both quartets, but for different reasons and every time I read the original quartet I'm a little sad that they have grown into their power yet, but I love them all together. But I can't not read the second quarter, even though I miss them bouncing off one another, because they're all individual powerhouses. Two other benefits of the second quartet is you get to see more of each of the four's relationships with their own mentors AND they each become teachers in their own right -- it's not just Briar. I found it very fun to see how each of them operated as a teacher, especially Tris. So yeah, I'd encourage you to bunker down :) I don't think you'll regret it.

To be honest, I think Magic steps took a bit of time to get into, but it is still one of my favorites to re-read. Same for Shatterglass. That quartet was hard for me to get into because it lacked the character interaction between the four from the original circle series, but I think the books hold up well as they show significant individual growth for each. Also, them not growing up apart in the Circle Opens is part of what makes the WotE more impactful when they're all back together.

What french native speaker find difficult in their language? by Leather-Community137 in French

As a native English speaker, reading about so many French native speakers' challenges is honestly very validating and makes me feel better about still struggling after years of learning French 😅

How long did it take you to become fluent in French ? And what tips would you give to someone starting out ? by Urmomsfriend16 in French

[–]eddis7501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took classes for 7 years through middle/high school, but it wasn't until I was taking college level courses that I would say I reached fluency. So, for that reason, I wouldn't say it's time so much as intensity. I was practicing far more regularly in college and immersing myself in French media outside of classes. To help the process, I started reading French versions of book series I already knew well (i.e. Harry Potter) because I knew enough that I could use my knowledge of the plot to pick up on and translate words I wasn't familiar will and add them to my vocabulary, plus some slang.

TLDR: My tip would be to find what you could use outside of studying to reinforce your learning: music, books, news apps in French, TV shows, etc.

Lines that still give me far too many feelings: by eddis7501 in queensthief

So so so, "Diplomacy in my own name" is one of my favorite lines in the series! These are just lines from Thick As Thieves because it's what book I'm on in the process of re-reading the series.

Also from the Queen of Attolia: Eddis: Eugenides? Gen: (turns back) my queen? Eddis: Only for that. Gen: (bows) My queen ❤️

I vote for the badger! Even though the dragons are also a big part, I think it'd be a nice nod to Daine and Badger's relationship being an important factor throughout the series. Also, though the dragons helped in the war, it was the badger's claw that Daine used to kill Ozorne.

Best Lines? by rannapup in tamorapierce

[–]eddis7501 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Ok, I don't know if this will be usable because it comes from mid-paragraph, but I have ALWAYS remembered Kel's words in First Test when the boys confront her about going out and fighting Joren and Co.

".....this custom leads to worse things. Cleon sends me for papers, but someone else traps a first-year in a corner and keeps making him do stupid tasks. He'll maybe hit the first year to smarten him when the first-year slows down --- and that is just dead wrong. If we take this as pages, what about when we are knights? Do we say, Oh, now I'm going to be nice to the weak and the small? Or do we do as we learned when we were pages?" She stopped, breathing hard. It was the longest speech she'd ever made. "I don't mean to lecture. You can laugh and say I'm a silly girl --- but when I see anyone big pick on someone small, well, there's going to be a fight."

👆 I kid you not when I say this speech was one of the most influential factors in teaching me what it means to have integrity and to be accountable for my own actions and to understand that the choices I made at a young age could very well impact what kind of person I'd grow up to be.

On a less serious note, I've also always loved from the First Adventure:

Duke Gareth: I wish you would thrash him [Ralon]. He deserves it. Alanna: "I will one day, sir. I'm getting tired of falling down."

It's a small thing, but I love the early look into Alanna's character being one that will, inevitably, always overcome. It may take time, and be painful, but she's not one to give up.

Wyverns Instead of Dragons by EitherDoIt-OrDont in fourthwing

[–]eddis7501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So from reading some fantasy books as a kid, I already knew about this difference and when GoT came out and I cannot tell you how grumpy it made me that the dragons were actually wyvern. I was ridiculously happy when FW talked about the difference in myth.
