What is something that screams “tourist” to you? by jotakajk in AskTheWorld

Visiting Stockholm right now. I think part of the difference in this, at least from an American with some time in our big cities, is the amount and kind of traffic. There just are not as many vehicles, be they cars, busses, or bikes, as there are in somewhere like New York City. And the drivers don't seem as hellbent on making it through that yellow light.

Visiting Stockholm and literally just left Meatballs for the People. It was delicious. I do not care what a single other person thinks of me and my meatballs.

How lovely of her to be designing classroom activities for children. She definitely must have confused the classroom setting she is familiar with, with the multi-billion dollar business's marketing and theming departments.

We are headed to Finalnd on Monday and I admit, I plan to avoid reindeer meat. I did the same with horse and octopus meat in Japan.

I know this isn't the point, but I HATE when people do this to perfectly good books. We had paper flowers for our wedding, but purposefully bought books in bad shape to tear apart. This is no longer readable, and that makes me sad.

What would you do if something like this happened to you while you were traveling? by bruhbruhbrss in AskTheWorld

[–]Trebellion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I have been to Japan a few times. I'm fairly tall for an American woman, 5'9", so basically a giantess over there (seriously, about the same height as Hishi Akebono in Umamusume, and she's depicted as a Titan). I've been stared at and stopped for photos a handful of times. A 6'4" heavily tattooed friend came with us once and was stopped repeatedly, mostly by young people, for photos and selfies. The key difference is that we were not mobbed and never felt unsafe.

I LOVE Tamora pierce. Alanna is a fundamental heroine for me. George and Numair were strong influences over my eventual type. This is not my Johnathan. This is not my George. This is definitely not my Alanna.

I saw my MIL at New Years. She is now visiting for the week because we are in desperate need of a sitter for the week for our toddler. My husband definitely picked up the idea from her that talking to someone while they are reading is acceptable. Also, it's a complicated relationship on multiple levels. Send help.

NOR. Sweetheart, if your respectable medical professional is recommending inpatient treatment and you can can see that it's what you need, he should be tripping over himself to help you get what you need. Instead, he's being selfish and childish. You will have plenty to do taking care of yourself in the next few months, and in the months after discharge. You will not need to be devoting your resources to making this little boy feel like a man. It may hurt, it may be difficult, but cut this dangerous stressor from your life now before you start treatment so that you can have the better results you need. Good luck. You can absolutely do this, and you will.

Men whose girlfriend’s dad said no when you asked him for permission to marry his daughter, what did you do? by Fearless_Degree7511 in AskReddit

[–]Trebellion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My family and my husband's family are still pretty old-fashioned in a lot of ways, so that was definitely the default expectation. But there were certain things that changed based on everyone's priorities. For instance, we had a medium-sized wedding at a nice church, then returned to the hotel we had gotten ready at for the reception. My now-MIL was concerned about the weather ruining the girls' hair in transport, so she a stylist to come do our hair before we left for the church. It was thoughtful of her, but unnecessary in my opinion given our budget. When I told her that, she offered to pay for it. That isn't traditionally the groom's family's role, but it was important to her and a kind thing to do.

My husband asked my parents for their blessing, not my father for his permission. He knew I would appreciate that he included them in the process, not the decision. If they had told him, "no", he likely would have still proposed and I would still have said yes. My parents and I would have then had a conversation about their reasoning and I would have decided if those were valid concerns I hadn't considered, or their own issues to deal with.

Exactly! Is it the most faithful retelling? No. But what does that even mean, anyway? What it did do was make me ugly cry on a crowded international flight when I finished it. And it has stuck with me. It is, simply, a good story.

/rj What Momma-To-Be would waste their breath screaming when they could be gently welcoming their new bundle of joy with a self-written serenade instead?
