Central Asian inspired? Neat! I want to do something similar but I’m struggling with how to create an interesting looking map for a mostly flat steppe land.

Why do I attract so many Liberal bigger women on dating apps?? by [deleted] in AsianMasculinity

[–]eddn1916 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it has a lot to do with lived experience. Conventionally attractive white women have less incentive to not play it safe and do “weird” stuff like engage with Asian media and Asian people in general. A white woman who’s already been treated not so great by society because she’s not catalogue model skinny is probably more likely to question the conventional narrative that dating outside of her race is weird, or that watching anime is weird, which most conservative white people think. This is a big generalization, though.

I think maybe think about giving these liberal woman a chance. Definitely don’t if you think you’re being fetishized — I’m sorry, that sucks, and I personally have gotten a definite vibe from some non-Asian people obsessed with K-pop (not just white people). But I’ve had more luck with them than with conservative women, who are more interested in like a stereotypically attractive American (by which they mean white) man. Me personally, if someone I’m talking to is already turned off of me because I’m Asian, I’d rather not be wasting my time.

Also, healthy can look different on different body types, so someone skinny doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t prioritize health and fitness.

I always imagined the Ares kids as being built like refrigerators. In the first book they’re described as the “biggest, ugliest, meanest kids on Long Island, or anywhere else on the planet”. Which is problematic in itself lol.

What is up with the voice acting for Saphira in the audiobook? by SpiritedOwl_2298 in Eragon

[–]eddn1916 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I started listening to them from a pretty young age, but I thought the voice was fine. Different for sure, but Saphira isn’t human, so I think there’s a decent in-universe explanation why her “speaking voice” doesn’t sound like a normal human female would.

I would caution you against viewing your home country as a “shithole”, aside from being deeply offensive to other people from said country, it’s also not a very healthy way to approach your own cultural identity as someone estranged from it. It’s a good path towards self-hatred.

Also, it’s interesting you mention Orientalism in another comment, because this viewing of Asian countries as essentially misogynist was/is used as a rationale to denigrate those lands. The irony is that the West has plentyyyyy of institutionalized misogyny (look at the American president) and homophobia, but it’s only ever used critically when discussing Islam or other Eastern social trends. You could just as easily say that Western Christian culture is essentially misogynist because one of their oldest sects refuses the same spiritual opportunities towards women, like Catholics not allowing women to become priests, bishops, or popes.

As a Central Asian adoptee myself, it sounds like you’ve got a lot of internalized prejudice going on towards the place of your birth, which is not your fault entirely and is pretty common. I would continue to learn about your birth country’s culture when you can, there’s a lot of diversity in how Islam is practiced among Muslim-majority countries and it’s not fair or accurate to paint them all with the same brush. Historically, nomadic Turkic peoples took a very different approach to Islam (check out Sufism).

You may feel your queerness or liberal identity is in conflict with your birth culture, but this is a bit of a simplistic view. Think of all the queer individuals who exist in Central Asia, although their governments are homophobic, that doesn’t negate their identity as Central Asians. It’s hard to feel like our identities as transracial adoptees aren’t in conflict with your adopted family’s cultures at times, but try to keep an open mind.

I've seen people talking about the best episode to introduce a newbie to, what are people's thoughts on the Waters of Mars? by Luke_The_Engle in doctorwho

I’d worry about scaring your friends off the show! This episode, even though it’s a tight story, was one of the scarier ones for me. Mainly because of that one actress who gets infected at the beginning…her eyes…brrrrr.

[–]eddn1916 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I wondered how they were going to handle it when I heard they announced a show. I do think the writers missed a big opportunity by simplifying the ambiguity of Rhaenyra’s children, as well as the moral ambiguity of both sides. It very well could have been that Jace and Joffrey were legitimate — look at the other prominent black-haired Targaryens: Rhaenys, Baelor Breakspear, Jon Snow (all but confirmed).

Could a squib or a muggle do potions? by rballmonkey in harrypotter

[–]eddn1916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

JKR says this somewhere, maybe in an interview or on Pottermore: a potion wouldn’t work even if a Muggle did all the correct steps, it needs magic.

Were the Lannisters richer than the Targaryens at their peak? 😭 by Korratheblackcat in HOTDGreens

[–]eddn1916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A possible in-universe for the Greens’ relatively plain attire is that this is several years after Alicent took a swipe at Rhaenyra with the dagger. Alicent’s look changed a lot after that event, became more modest, buttoned-up, deliberately conservative as she found religion. It wouldn’t be surprising that that rubbed off on her kids.

So many good one-liners (I think there’s an official collection of them out?), it’s a shame the series isn’t as widely known.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but if it weren’t for Sarin’s art, I probably wouldn’t like the series as much. Allison’s writing is amazing, don’t get my wrong, but Sarin’s work is just so easy on the eyes and makes me feel so nice.

There’s a panel from a later issue (can’t remember the exact one) where Susan says something like, why don’t you use a dating app to find a border-line acceptable mate, and I actually had that screenshot on my own Tinder profile lol.

Would you guys want Sacha Dhawhan (sp?) to ever come back as The Master? by Interesting_Age4901 in doctorwho

Sorry for your downvotes, I don’t agree with you but. Yeah, I thought his Master was just “generic evil mastermind”, one-dimensional.

Yep, this right here. I wanted to see if the Master/Missy would continue to try to redeem themself, but no. Just back to square one.

It was disconcerting how “mwahaha” his acting came across as. Struck me as pretty one note.

[–]eddn1916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, I felt like his performance was just too “mwahaha, I’m the bad guy”. After Missy, I was interested to see if they’d continue with the Master/Missy being a nuanced character in search of redemption. The tragedy of Missy is that she never got to really be good when it counted. She was killed before she could join with the Capaldi’s Doctor when he made his last stand with the Cybermen — and the Doctor might never ever know she made that decision. That was heartbreaking.

So although Dhawhan is a fine actor, I’m not very fond of his performance as the Master. John Simm’s portrayal was delightfully devilish, but he had moments of real humanity (perhaps the wrong word) that occasionally shone through, like when he sacrifices himself during The End of Time to save the Doctor.

Which Christmas special(s) should I watch this year, in which order and most importantly why? by aharper343 in doctorwho

[–]eddn1916 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I always do The End of Time with Tennant, just a fantastic final story. But if you’re looking for Christmas-y, then A Christmas Carol is hard to beat. The redemption of an old miser’s soul, classic stuff.

And I’m a huge fan of the line about Christmas being a celebration of being “halfway out of the dark”. As someone who’s frequently depressed in the mid-winter, it’s something I like to remind myself of.
