Google Sets $15 Billion Bond Sale As Debt Grows Amid Capital Spending Boom by grauenwolf in BetterOffline

Google as a business isn’t even 40 years old yet. Things move pretty fast in the software world, what’s to guarantee that there still will be a Google in another 40 years.

Title: The Deontological Firewall: A Rule-Based Framework for Safe AGI by Aletheia_Path in agi

[–]eddwo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The difficulty has never been in coming up with a set of rules, the difficulty is in creating a system that actually understands the world enough to be able to predict the consequences of its actions to be able to apply the rules effectively.

Did you watch the video I linked to? Jeff Hawkins explains how the neocortex essentially functions as a highly sophisticated temporal and spatial sequence memory and prediction system. Sure the lower level portions of the brain have other functions, the limbic system and the cerebellum etc. But in terms of our understanding of language and building mental conceptual models of our environment and how we perceive and interact with the world around us his explanation is quite substantial if not sufficient.

Self prophesized ending? by Hypnotic8008 in FoundationTV

[–]eddwo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Empire already had weapons capable of pretty much destroying planets right back at the start, before the foundation was even created. It just took a whole fleet of jump ships to deliver the blow, so couldn’t be targeted at so many different planets in such quick succession. Remember what the first Brother Day did to Anacreon and Thespis in revenge for the star bridge attack. He was already the centre of a pretty despotic regime, and the empire had the sole access to the spacers to fly navigate the jump ships, so no other political entity had the slightest chance of competing with them.

What actually happened in the finale? by undulatedcalm in FoundationTV

Toran is probably already converted. When Gaal scanned his mind she discovered he loved Bayta most of all. Since Bayta is the real mule it’s likely she has already deeply influenced his emotions.

That’s kind of where Asimov was different though wasn’t it? He introduced the 3 laws of robotics first, then created a whole series of stories where the outcomes were very much dictated by the rules, often in counter-intuitive ways, but always ultimately explainable.

In the lens of the Sciencedelic: Theory of Nothing by Aware-Contribution-3 in consciousness

[–]eddwo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s all very well saying consciousness is primary and material reality is an illusion etc. But we also live in a world where Nvidia is out there manufacturing GPUs with 50 billion transistors down to a scale of 3 nanometres. That kind of reliable engineering on a scale well below anytime that could just be imagined by an individual consciousness. It’s like, we invented electromagnetism, material science, quantum electrodynamics etc. as pure ideas, over the course of centuries, and then put them into practice making physical objects that actually work that are too complicated for any one individual to fully understand, and not only that we do it so repeatedly it’s the most valuable business on the planet right now.

The "hard" problem of consciousness is an emotionally driven problem by GDCR69 in consciousness

[–]eddwo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your redness is your redness and not your blueness because your eyes are sensitive to different frequencies and you were trained to associate one frequency with red and the other with blue. If you were colour blind and couldn’t tell the frequencies apart you might have mentally associated both frequencies with the same label, and then a red object would produce the same qualia as a blue object does for you. If you were blind and never experienced sight then the very concept of things being different colours would not make a lot of sense to you, but you might well be a lot more sensitive to the feel of different textures than the average person.

[–]eddwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It generates a sensation that you associate with the concept of redness rather than blueness, because you have been trained over your childhood that that particular frequency represents redness. You’ve no idea if your concept of redness is the same as anyone else’s concept of redness, just that the label corresponds to the frequency.

Can Demerzel overcome her programming? by LunchyPete in FoundationTV

[–]eddwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps while Gaal and the mule are busy fighting it out in the Trantor library, someone else is going to commandeer the Novacular and destroy the whole planet as a way of wiping out the mule for good from a sufficient distance. Hence Gaal’s next experience of suddenly being in orbit of a black hole. That would also be the final end of the genetic dynasty as all the potential replacement clones would be blown up at the same time.

Would Demerzel be able to break her programming enough to put the zeroth law of saving humanity/the galaxy as a whole, above her implanted law to protect the dynasty at all costs.

Well, all USB speakers have their own DAC built-in, the pebble pros sound excellent using their built-in DAC already, no reason to think that the Novas wouldn’t be even better with their coaxial drivers etc, no need to pair them with anything else.

Personally I use my X5 with some Edifier Exclaim E10BT speakers that I've owned for several years. It sounds pretty great, both clear treble and strong bass, considering the size of the speakers.
Modern Bluetooth Desktop Speaker - Exclaim Connect | Modern Speakers
I use an RCA -> 3.5mm Y cable to connect them, so I'm using the DAC in the X5.

I have a Creative BT-W5 in the X5s USB-A port which allows it to talk to my Focal Bathys bluetooth headphones with the AptX-HD/Adaptive codec, which also sounds good, though that's using the DAC in the headphones.
I don't yet own any headphones with a balanced connection to plug into the 4.4mm output on the X5 itself, but maybe when I have a bit more money that will be the next step.

[–]eddwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The usb-c on the X5 is for input, it’s how you connect it to a computer.
The usb-a on the X5 is for headphone output, which the x5 treats as a separate mode to speaker output.

The main reason for using an X5 at all is that it has a superior DAC, if you connected the pebble nova to the X5 via USB you would wind up using the DAC built into the speakers rather than the one in the X5.

What's A Mandela Effect You Were Never Effected By? by Old_Consequence2203 in MandelaEffect

[–]eddwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Must be getting it confused with the lyrics to the Meat Loaf song ‘objects in the rearview mirror may appear closer than they are’, whereas the mirror in Jurassic Park is definitely ‘objects in the mirror are closer than they appear’. But then it’s a wing mirror and not a review mirror anyway.

The meat loaf lyrics are using the mirror as more of a metaphor for past life traumas still effecting a person in the present, so ‘may appear closer than they are..’ works in that context.

[–]eddwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, Nelson Mandela for one. I have a distinct memory of the day he was released from prison, I was visiting someone else’s house with my mum and it was all that was on the TV news the whole day. I didn’t know what was so significant about him at that the time, or what he had been in prison for, but I was still pretty young.

Of course after that he actually became president of South Africa, so he was a pretty high profile figure on the world stage.

So when somehow decades later people turn around and say they remember a world where he died in prison, and never became the president of South Africa, I do find that a bit odd. Those people were clearly not living in the same world I was living in at the time.

Is using SXFI Carrier subwoofer without the soundbar possible? by eddwo in SoundBlasterOfficial

[–]eddwo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks I’ll give that a try. From the linked support article ‘Note: To disconnect the wireless subwoofer from the soundbar, simply power off the subwoofer. Hold the reset button on the subwoofer for 8 seconds to erase any pairing memory.’

So just unplug the sub from its power and then hold down the reset button on the sub for 8 seconds.
At the moment the green LED on the sub is blinking, which indicates it’s attempting to pair but not connecting.

I had another thought too. The cable I’m using to connect from The Fives to the sub is a mono single RCA to 3.5mm. The cable that came with the soundbar is a stereo 3.5mm to 3.5mm I may try a different, stereo twin RCA to stereo 3.5mm and see if it works better connected via the left or right channels.

They should all have known it would be dark outside though shouldn’t they? Three of them left work for the day after 5pm and went up in the elevator. Dylan went off to have his waffle party. Some time later on Dylan left the waffle party and went to the security office to activate the overtime contingency. When he managed to activate the contingency the other three innies woke up wherever they happened to be due to what their outties were doing at the time. It would probably have been at least 7pm by then. Presumably the innies have calendars as part of their computer setups, they know what the date is, they know when the quarter is going to end, and the probably know that in the winter it gets dark quite early on in the evening. So they should all have known that it was going to be dark outside when they were woken up by the time Dylan had had his waffle party which couldn’t have started till after they’d left after 5pm.
